While waiting for an overdue baby was not exactly what I had expected there is an upside to everything, in this case the delayed paternity leave allows Hip Daddy to spend some of the school holidays with us at home! We all love having daddy around and it will make holiday outings a lot more fun (and of course easy). The kids are also hanging out to watch the newly released Despicable Me 3, which I will keep tucked away for a rainy afternoon:
Seeing the original Despicable Me at the cinema is still one of my kids’ favourite movie moments, the whole family loved it and we still watch it regularly. Its sequel was another big hit so I have no doubt Despicable Me 3 will live up to our expectations and deliver plenty of laughs.
If you fell in love with hilarious villain Gru you are in for a treat, as Despicable Me 3 doubles the giggles (and adventure) with the surprise arrival of Gru’s twin brother Dru. Gru’s lovely wife Lucy and his three adopted daughters Agnes, Margo and Edith generally keep Gru on the right track, but with brother Dru on the scene Gru is rediscovering just how much fun it is to be bad again.
Add to the mix a bunch of cheeky minions, sneaky disguises, clever thefts, last-minute rescues, friends, enemies and the beginning of a family bond, Despicable Me 3 promises to be full of action and adventure.
‘Despicable Me 3’ is now available on Blu-ray (RRP $44.95) and DVD (RRP $39.95) at all good retail stores across Australia.

And then they were nine… It’s hard to believe that those teeny tiny premmie twins have grown into beautiful, delightful 9-year olds, each with a different personality but so wonderful in their own way. I won’t lie, I find it hard to see them grow up so fast and letting them go into the big scary world that is out there. As a mother of four girls (and a boy) I am always looking for ways to inspire my little ladies and help them grow into strong, confident women, which is why I was so excited to discover the Girl Hero Project:
Powered by Australian author Susannah McFarlane, who you may know from her successful book series EJ12, the Girl Hero Project is a brand new online space dedicated to tween girls and their parents. Susannah’s vision for the platform is to offer a safe, age-appropriate environment where girls can go to hear a different dialogue around what it means to be a girl, to encourage girls to speak up, get active in their communities, to inspire them to write, play and learn that they are never too small to do big things.
It is no secret that tween and teen girls are struggling in today’s society, and that building their confidence and self-esteem from an early age is incredibly important. The Girl Hero Project doesn’t waste words on all the superficial things society cares for, and instead focusses on strong, inspirational girls who make a difference in their community and the world, who lift others up instead of breaking them down and who, as young as they are, build long-lasting legacies.
By becoming a Girl Hero you can learn about other inspirational girl heroes, read and share helpful inspirations and tips, create affirmations for yourself and your friends that empower and lift you up, join in the writing competition and much more. And the best part is, everyone can join in and it is completely free!
As a special treat for Hip Little One readers author Susannah McFarlane is kindly giving away a copy of her fabulous book EJ Girl Hero – Hot and Cold to the first 10 Hip Little One readers who join the Girl Hero Project. As if you needed another reason to get your girl(s) involved with this awesome movement! For your chance to score this fantastic read for FREE simply become a Girl Hero here and enter the promo code ‘HLO17’ during sign up. Good luck!

If, like my kids, you enjoyed plenty of giggles with some of Morris Gleitzman‘s funny children’s books you may be curious to see how he tackles a much more serious topic like World War II. I was definitely keen to find out, and also like to pre-read the books our twins read if I am not sure how well they will understand tricky subjects, so I got stuck into Morris’ latest release: Maybe.
Readers first met young Jewish boy Felix at the start of the World War II, and have been following his journey in the award-winning books Once, Then, Now, After and Soon. This time we’re travelling across the globe together with Felix and his friend Anya, as they begin a brand new life in Australia in Maybe (RRP $19.99).
So how does a young boy escape post-war Poland, especially with pregnant teenager in tow? Wat about his close friend and rescuer Gabriek? The war may be over but that doesn’t mean Felix is out of danger, and there are plenty of people out there to watch out far. From dangerous mobs to revenge attacks, from soldiers with guns to hiding in the dark and from big escapes to a newspaper hero, Maybe is one big adventure from cover to cover.
To say I am impressed is an understatement, I was deeply touched by the way Morris Gleitzman captured some of the real feelings and emotions of the war period in a way that children can understand and connect with. Yes the book raised some questions with our 9-year old twins but it was a fantastic opportunity to talk about history and how much people have suffered. Both kids said they want to borrow the rest of the ‘Felix family’ from the library so I’d say that’s definitely a thumbs up for Maybe.
