Having visitors from overseas has proven to be the perfect excuse to (re)discover our own backyard. Skipping the waves at beautiful beaches, splashing about in a blow-up pool in the garden, picking cherries straight from the tree (and eating at least as much) at a cherry farm in the hills… so many lovely memories have been added to our family’s ‘memory box’ these last few weeks. We’re now preparing for the big goodbye and I am expecting a lot of tears, wish us luck!

Feeding Fashion: Frugi

After five babies there are many things that get easier, but for me breastfeeding is definitely not one of them. Personally I prefer to quietly feed my baby in the comfort of our own home but sometimes you have no choice but to feed away from home, especially this time of year with so many events, BBQs and parties coming up. Luckily discreet breastfeeding has proven to be much easier than I thought thanks to Frugi:

Frugi 'Mother'

I first discovered Frugi a few years ago when I was hunting for hip clothing that would be gentle on my daughter’s sensitive skin. The beautiful organic cotton was soft and comfortable and the designs gorgeous so Frugi has been a personal favourite ever since for all of my babies. Of course it is not just the little ones who deserve Frugi quality, which is why Baby Gift Works also stocks some lovely Frugi pieces especially for (nursing) mums.

Frugi 1

The Frugi ‘Mother’ collection is designed to make breastfeeding easier whilst being comfortable to wear and easy to care for. Made from the same organic cotton as the children’s range you know there are no nasty chemicals hiding in your clothing, yay for baby snuggles that are both soft and safe! Nice to know: Frugi donates 1% of their turnover to environmental charities.

Frugi 2

This dusty turquoise Frugi Summer Tie Dress (RRP $136.95, size Small, Medium and Large) in pretty Blooming Garden print is the perfect light frock for the upcoming summer season. I love how it covers and stretches in all the right places without looking baggy or slouchy, a great boost for this tired mama’s confidence. The under-bust tie adds a lovely feminine shape and is very flattering, even if you still have some baby kilos to hide like I do.

Frugi Dress 3

When it comes to feeding time gently slide the fabric to the side to unveil the secret nursing panel underneath, in doing so you create a small opening that allows your baby to latch on without mum having to display too much skin. If you didn’t know any better you would never guess this dress is a ‘breastfeeding’ garment so you can easily wear it post-nursing too. I am not a confident ‘public breastfeeder’ at all but in this dress I managed to feed Harriet without feeling exposed, big win for me!

If you are a regular Hip Little One reader you probably spotted the eye catching new Avalon Damask print that we featured in last month’s gr8x post. Move over plain and boring baby bags, this beautiful custom print shows that mamas don’t have to give in on style when travelling with their babies. If you’re looking for a spacious bag that will easily hold all your baby essentials this new release will have you swooning:

Ella Carry All

The trendy Ella Carry All (RRP $159.95, available in Twilight Blue and Dove Grey) is measuring a roomy L40cm x W15cm x H30cm in size yet is surprisingly light weight, making it perfect for active mums on the go.

The gr8x design team knows most parents are busy enough as it is, which is why they make sure their baby bags are fitted with lots of little parenting hacks that save you time and hassle. Take for example the high quality nylon outer: it’s strong and durable and can easily be wiped clean with a damp cloth, no tears wasted over sticky fingers or dirty marks.

Ella Carry All BlueAnother great feature is the collection of internal and external pockets in a range of sizes, helping you to keep your nappies, wipes, creams, baby food and other baby must-haves tidy and organised. After all, no mum has time to dig around in the dark depths of her baby bag desperately hoping to find what she is looking for (especially when dealing with a messy emergency!). And how clever are the adjustable stroller clips for use on pram or stroller? Thumbs up for hands free travelling!

Lovely bonus: The Ella Carry All comes with a free quality insulated, zipped bottle traveller and padded change mat in gr8x signature print.

George Foreman

Now that baby Harriet is two months old and we’ve settled into some sort of routine it is time to get working on my post-baby body. I’ve cleared our pantry of all the unhealthy comfort food (it was fun while it lasted) and stocked up on fresh, tasty, nutritious ingredients, bring on a healthy 2016! Luckily for me I am huge fan of salads and with so many different ways to create a yummy salad I have plenty of delicious lunches and dinners to choose from.

Salmon Salad

Being a busy mum of five my time is precious, which is why I have come up with a few ‘quick and easy’ meal hacks. Every few days I fill a stack of containers with freshly chopped vegetables: cucumber, carrot, capsicum, mushroom, cherry tomatoes and red onion. Just add a bowl of pre-washed spinach leaves, a few pine nuts and a sprinkle of grated cheese and you have got a super easy but very tasty base salad, all that’s missing is some much needed protein.

George Foreman Grill

Picking the right ingredients is one thing but the way you cook your meals is also very important, which is why I rely on George Foreman to keep my food lean and clean. Whether it’s chicken breast, a piece of salmon, steak or even vegetables, within a few short minutes they are juicy and grilled to perfection on the new Convertible Easy to Clean Grill (RRP $149.95) without the need for oil or butter. This clever convertible cooking appliance can be used closed as a contact grill or opened up like a griddle, making it extremely versatile for use at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

George Foreman Chicken

The slightly angled design allows yucky fat to run off the cooking plates into a removable drip tray, removing up to 42% of fat so you can enjoy your meal without a guilty conscience. I have to admit this fabulous feature was a real eye-opener for me, I never realised how much fat was hiding in certain foods! Of course hubby’s breakfast bacon will never be healthy but at least whatever fat ends up in the tray you are not consuming so it is a huge improvement from the ordinary fry pan.

George Foreman Open GrillThe Convertible Easy to Clean Grill is compact enough for use on an ordinary kitchen bench but surprisingly large in cooking surface, especially when used open (great for families). On the other hand I would never have bothered to turn on the outdoor BBQ to cook lunch for just myself but the Easy to Clean Grill is very convenient and fast for small serves too, and no need to go outside in the heat or rain.

George Grill dishwasherThe new ‘George Tough’ Pro coated plates can be removed with the touch of a button, are dishwasher safe AND three times more durable than standard non-stick coating. Once you’re done cooking just place the dirty plates in the dishwasher and sit down to eat without having to scrub and clean up afterwards, how mum-friendly is that? There is nothing like putting up your tired feet after dinner without worrying about a kitchen bench full of dishes.

George Foreman Salmon

Need a simple and fast dinner for the kids before heading out for swimming? Just pop some sausages, rissoles or burgers on the Easy to Clean Grill and they’ll cook while you butter the rolls. Not only is it easy to use and quick to clean, one look at all the fat running into the drip tray and you know the George way of cooking is a healthier way.

Penguin Australia

Have you ever wondered what the world would look like if you were the size of an ant, if you were swimming in deep waters like a whale or flying high above ground like an eagle? Thanks to Australian author and illustrator Graeme Base, known for his wonderful talent to capture the beauty of flora and fauna, you can now come eye to eye with some of these amazing creatures:

Eye to Eye

Eye to Eye is a large, full-colour hardback children’s book filled with mind blowing pictures of animals in their natural surroundings. First children take a look at the animal’s eye, so they can guess what creature they are about to get up-close to, followed by a wonderfully detailed image of the whole animal drawn in true Graeme Base style. As always Graeme’s illustrations are full of special effects and there is so much to look at on each page, Eye to Eye will no doubt become a hot favourite with little animal lovers.

With exactly one month to go until Christmas Eve parents across the globe are using the famous Santa-threat to encourage their youngsters to behave extra well. The thought of getting onto the naughty list and missing out on presents is pretty scary to most, but will it also have the desired effect on a little boy named Wal?…

The Christmas Peg

Being on your best behaviour all the time is not easy, but one year Wal was naughty so many times he really made it onto Santa’s naughty list. While other children happily unwrapped their Christmas gifts all Wal received was a plain, boring, wooden peg, now where’s the fun in that? Will The Christmas Peg be enough to teach Wal a lesson for next Christmas?
