Every December there are many families looking forward to spending a first Christmas with a gorgeous new addition to spoil with fabulous presents but it is not that easy for everyone. While most are dressing up their little bundle in a special Christmas outfit and taking happy family snaps other not so lucky parents are spending the festive season in Special Care Units/ Neonatal Intensive Care Units across the country, often watching their baby from behind glass and worrying what the new year is going to bring them.

Earlybirds Pink

If you are (or know) a parent of one of these very precious early arrivals I highly recommend you check out Australian company Earlybirds. Not only does Earlybirds make the most beautiful clothes specifically designed for teeny tiny babies (as little as 800 gr!) but they are also long term partner of many great causes that support babies, children and families that need it. So whether you want to put together a lovely gift for a new baby or are searching for helpful information Earlybirds is the name to remember.

Earlybirds Organics

The Earlybirds range consists of a wonderful selection of clothing and accessories in boys, girls and gender neutral colours. Created by a mum of a premature baby each garment has been carefully designed to be easy to open so that doctors, nurses and parents can check and dress baby without too much hassle. All products are made from soft, 100% cotton that is light weight and breathable and there is even a special Earlybirds Organics collection available made with pure certified organic cotton.

Earlybirds Blue

As three of our babies spent time in the Special Care Unit I know what it is like to leave your baby in the hands of hospital staff, and while most hospitals supply baby clothing for those in care parents (including myself) really value being able to dress their child in its own clothes that fit well and look beautiful in photos too. If this Christmas brings your family or a family you know a surprise early bird you know where to go for a thoughtful, practical and much appreciated gift.

This year everyone’s favourite cuddly pillow has become even more popular with an exciting new 3-in-1 design that the kids are going to love:

Glow Friends UnicornPillow Pet Glow Friends ($29.99, ages 3+) have the soft, cuddly feel of a comfy pillow, they have a lovable, friendly personality and make a fabulous buddy and (the most exciting part) they glow in the dark which looks amazing and offers a bit of extra security at bedtime.  The magical glow comes from special LED lights that don’t get hot (making them completely safe to snuggle up to) and they automatically turn off after 20 minutes to save battery life.

Glow Friends TurtleThere are currently 6 adorable Glow Friends to choose from, my favourite would have to be the unicorn (for that extra magical touch). Which Glow Friend would light up your little ones face (no pun intended)? It feels like I just blinked and 9 months went by. Not much longer and Sybbie won’t be a baby anymore, she is standing up, cruising the furniture and eating two whole slices of bread for lunch. With no teeth in sight Sybil is still enjoying her baby meals but she is quickly becoming more independent, feeding herself with her hand and trying very hard with a spoon. If you are about to start your baby on solids you can count on Tommee Tippee to make your life easier. Check out these awesome Tommee Tippee baby feeding products and enter to win them all:

Food ProcessorNow don’t let the name of this multifunctional gadget fool you, the All-in-one Food Processor (RRP $169.95) is so much more than just a food processor! Yes it steams and blends, allowing you to create nutritious, fresh meals for your baby whenever you want (and saving you a bucketload of money compared to store bought jars and pouches) but there is more to this clever kitchen appliance. Aside from the food preparation part it warms baby bottles and foods and it can even sterilise your bottles for you too.

Tommee Tippee Food ProcessorSo that’s 5 great uses in one unit and no, it will not take up your whole kitchen bench. It is suprisingly compact in size and comes complete with storage bag perfect for at home or on holiday. It takes just a few simple buttons to control so even dads and grandparents can master it. You can cook separate meals for your baby or you can just add the ‘family meal’ to the processor for a quick blend, easy as pie.

Soft Bite SpoonsAnd then there you are, a bowl of freshly made up baby food in hand and hopefully a camera ready for those ‘first solids’ photos. The Soft bite spoons (2-pack RRP $7.25, 4 months+) are created with adults and babies in mind: the long spoon is easy to hold for parents (the extra length is very handy when feeding from a jar) and it has a small tip to fit in little mouths. Many babies will ‘insist’ on holding a spoon too so for them the shorter spoon is perfect. Both spoons are soft and gentle on gums and teeth.

Roll 'n' Go BibSolids equals mess: on their face, in their hair, on the high chair, on the ground, you better get the wipes ready! I’ll admit that it is hard to end a meal with clean clothes but you can always try, the Roll ‘n’ Go Bibs (2-pack RRP $14.75, 4 months+) are a great size so they cover most of the front, have a useful food catcher, are easy to wipe clean (plus dishwasher safe) and you can roll them up into a compact package for in your nappy bag.

Fresh Food FeederWe used the Fresh Food Feeder (RRP $6.75, 6 months+) for all of our children and with summer coming up we’ll definitely be using it a lot. Fill these clever tools with fresh or even frozen fruit (our favourites are pear, apple, watermelon, rockmelon and grapes) and you’ve got your hungry little baby a delicious, healthy snack without the risk of choking. They can hold it themselves, it works a treat for teething and comes with keep-clean cover and 2 extra feeding bags.

First Fork and SpoonSooner or later your baby will want to start feeding him/herself, it’s both a delightful and very messy stage but I guess they have to learn by doing it. The colourful First Fork and Spoon (RRP $11.20, 12 months+) may look a little odd to us grown-ups but their ergonomic design make it much easier for little ones to bring the food to their mouth without spilling. They’re BPA-free, easy to hold and feature blunt edges for extra safety.

Miomee First Drinking CupWhether your baby is breastfed or bottlefed, quite early on you can start offering your baby little sips of water in a cup. The Tommee Tippee Miomee First Drinking Cup (RRP $12.95, 4 months+) is specifically designed for young babies featuring a soft feel spout (requiring similar suction to a normal teat) and easy hold handles making it the ideal next step up from a regular bottle. Very practical: the cup, bottle ring, handles and spout are interchangable with the rest of the Miomee range.

Also included is a bonus hard spout and a lid to keep the spout clean and protected when not in use. With a 150ml capacity this is the perfect starter cup for little ones and excellent value compared to other cups, especially because the extra spout is included.

Discovera Trainer CupJust like the spouts on the First Drinking Cup the 260ml Discovera Trainer Cup (RRP $12.95, 6 months+) is fitted with innovative SAMTECH technology, this clever non-spill valve design protects against messy, sticky, inconvenient spills and drips and it can even withstand a good shake (because babies just love shaking their bottles!). The handles will help your baby learn to drink independently.

Discovera Active TipperOnce your baby becomes more confident at drinking from a bottle and drinks larger amount of water he/she can move on to the Discovera Active Tipper (RRP $12.95, 12 months+). All Tommee Tippee Discovera cups and bottles are BPA free and have a very handy write-on area so you can personalise it with your child’s name, that way it is easy for babysitters and childcare workers to give your child the right bottle.

cheesecake shop

Caribbean dream, treasure cake, lemon meringue, caramel mudcake, mississippi baked cheesecake, eclairs, profiteroles, I don’t know about you but I am starting to feel a little (or a lot!) hungry at the sound of all these delights. I have been extremely good these past few months but I think come Christmas I have earned a bit of a naughty treat.

Naughty or NiceThe cake makers at The Cheesecake Shop would love to know if you’ve been naughty or nice this year and have put together a super quick survey to find out. How helpful have you been, to your friends but also to strangers? Are you a great sharer or do you always put yourself in first spot? What about speaking the truth, or do you sneak in a little white lie every now and then? It’s almost end of the year so it’s time to make up the balance.

Chocolate Mud Cake (Square Lightbox Shot)Just pop over to The Cheesecake Shop Facebook page, answer ten simple (slightly cheeky) multiple choice questions and you will be rewarded with a $5 gift voucher to use at your next visit to The Cheesecake Shop, that’s pretty nice if you ask me (and at the same time a bit naughty too)! For a bit of extra competition they’re also comparing us Aussies with our neighbours from across the water, who do you think has been the naughtiest??

All over the world Australian kids are known to be real water lovers who spend as much as time as possible at the beach or pool side. On hot Summer days there is nothing more refreshing than a splash in the water but with water comes danger too, luckily we can count on our amazing life savers to keep an eye on our kids. If your little girl is dreaming of becoming a Junior Life Saver there is no better Christmas gift than the brand new Australian Girl Doll Annabelle:

Annabelle is ready for the beach

Active, water crazy Annabelle is arriving in Australia this week, right on time for the busy Summer season. Many families will be holidaying near the water these school holidays so Annabelle has been practising her life saving skills all Winter. She is definitely beach ready with her bright pink swimsuit, floral sarong, thongs and a sweet sun hat to complete the look. To keep her beautiful long dark hair out of the way during her swims she even comes with a real nipper swim cap.

Beach Accessory SetAs a proper Junior Life Saver Annabelle never hits the beach without sunscreen and her favourite towel and she absolutely loves riding the waves on her body board (Beach Accessory Set sold separately, RRP $16.95). Of course there are plenty of other accessories available in store like pretty dresses, a horse riding set, pyjamas, a hair brush, a net ball set and much more. Fill your doll’s wardrobe piece by piece so you can change her outfit as often as you change your own.

Junior Life Saver Annabelle

Junior Life Saver Annabelle

Just like the other four Australian Girl dolls Annabelle is made using high quality, durable materials and her body is the perfect combination of firm and huggable. She measures an impressive 50cm tall and unlike many other dolls she can stand independently. Annabelle’s lovely brown eyes close when you lay her flat and her soft kankelon hair can be washed and styled, after a day with a nipper cap on it you might want to give it a bit of brush to get beach party ready!

Annabelle and the Missing TurtlesIf you order sporty Annabelle before November 30th you will receive a copy of the new Australian Girl novel Annabelle and the Missing Turtles (RRP $12.95) completely FREE. Annabelle and the Missing Turtles is the third book in the Australian Girl series, written by Rose Inserra and beautifully illustrated by Jason Chatfield. This lovely book would make a great stocking filler but be quick, there are only four days left to claim this special offer!

Safe-n-Sound Platinum SICT

Baby, Out & About  Comments Off on Safe-n-Sound Platinum SICT
Nov 252013

With the big school holidays coming up many families will be hitting the road with precious cargo onboard, so it is more important than ever to give your child seats a good checkover. As we are planning a trip to the beautiful Grampians (quite the drive) we decided now was the perfect time to check the size, straps, position and installation of our children’s car seats, starting with baby Sybil.

Safe-n-Sound Platinum SICT

As sad as it makes me there was no avoiding it any longer, our little Sybil is a rather tall baby and she just got too big for the capsule; time to move on to a convertible child restraint. Obviously safety is our highest priority so when we researched the different options available we decided that extra side impact protection was a must for the new car seat. The brand new Safe-n-Sound Platinum SICT was not only the logical next step up from our Safe-n-Sound Infant Carrier, it also ticked all our boxes for safety and quality.

AHR Easy AdjustOf course a car seat can only provide ultimate protection if it is properly installed so for peace of mind we had a professional car seat fitter pop by to do the fitting for us. Her visit was a real eye opener for me and I regret not using this service for our other car seats. While she was installing our new child restraint she talked me through all its clever features and for me this really confirmed that we made the right choice.

Precious head well protected

Precious head well protected

My first impression of the Safe-n-Sound Platinum SICT was that it was big and luxurious, I did worry about the size for a moment but that turned out to be no issue for our Toyota Tarago. The seat is extremely well padded, soft and very comfortable, it’s almost like a lazy boy for babies (I wish they made car seats like these for adults!). The Safe-n-Sound Platinum SICT (suitable for ages 0-4) is a convertible car seat so it can face both ways but we prefer to keep our little lady rearward facing as long as possible.

Side Impact Cushion TechnologyYou can also immediately spot the Side Impact Cushion Technology (SICT): this double layer of cushioning on either side of the seat is what makes it larger in size but this is also what makes this Safe-n-Sound’s safest seat yet. The innovative technology is specifically designed to surround and protect the delicate head and torso area and minimises the energy felt by your child in the event of a side impact crash.

Side Impact Cushion Technology (SICT)

Side Impact Cushion Technology (SICT)

When it comes to safety there is more to the Platinum SICT than the impressive side impact protection, a safety harness also plays a big role and Safe-n-Sound has made it really easy to create the perfect fit for your child. Unlike other car restraints that have three or four different slots for the shoulder straps, which requires rethreading as your child grows, the Platinum SICT is fitted with a Hassle Free Harness and AHR Easy Adjust.

Easy AdjustThis clever feature completely removes the need for rethreading the straps, simply pull the lever and this will automatically adjust the height of the shoulder straps and the head rest. There is no need to check height markers or worry if your child is in between sizes, you can make little adjustments whenever and as often as you want by however much your child has grown (even if it is just 1 cm at a time).

By making the adjusting so easy I think parents are more likely to actually do it, as opposed to rethreading which they often put off because of the hassle and time it takes to do it. Because you don’t have to rethread the straps yourself there is no chance of human threading errors.

Platinum SICT Rearward FacingA real sanity saver when you are dealing with a sleeping baby is the EZ-Buckle System which keeps the buckle neatly positioned to the front, that way  you don’t have to feel around under your baby to find the buckle. You can also use the handy Harness Holders to keep the harness ‘open’ when you put the child in/out, no more sitting on the straps which is particularly handy on warm days when the metal parts can get very hot. To tighten the harness there is an easily accessible push button at the front.

Overall we are extremely happy with our Safe-n-Sound Platinum SICT, in the past 5 years we have used four different convertible car seats and this one is by far the best. If I had to give any downsides to the seat it would have to be the size as this could possibly be an issue in smaller cars when you have multiple seats next to eachother.
