Bye bye nursery, hello toddler room

With the arrival of baby no.6 around the corner we are currently in a mad rush to finish our bedroom puzzle, something we always seem to leave until the very last minute! While we agreed that Harriet would have to vacate the nursery for the new arrival, at not even 2 years old (and still very much our ‘baby’) we also felt she wasn’t quite ready to move into a shared room with one of her older sisters. Our solution: A lovely toddler room fit for our little treasure…

As soon as I saw this dreamy StarBright Toddler Bed (Ages 18 months – 5 years) I knew it would fit our needs perfectly, it ticks every single one of our boxes! Designed for small legs the bed sits close to the ground, this makes getting in and out a breeze and will help your growing toddler feel safe, confident and grown-up. Harriet loves climbing in by herself and testing out her new bed (complete with fake snoring sounds), nap time or not!

Because safety is important to us I really appreciate the protective side panels that will keep little sleepyheads from accidentally tumbling out of bed as they sleep. Manufactured by Worlds Apart this easy-to-assemble bed is made with sturdy, high quality MDF and features a slat base, ensuring a durable and solid construction that is tested to the most stringent safety standards. The cute attached bedside table is even strong enough to double as a parent seat for that last bedtime story, how convenient is that?

Another delightful child-friendly feature of this sweet bed is the built-in night light that helps busy bees drift off to sleep peacefully and will turn off after 15 minutes. The moon-shaped light spreads a calming glow over the bed and projects a starry night sky onto the wall at the same time, it’s like sleeping in space! Unlike with separate night lights there are no dangerous loose cords or cables and it can not fall on the ground when little hands reach for it in the middle of the night.

The gender neutral colour scheme makes the StarBright bed a great choice for boys and girls, it easily fits in with any decor and you can simply dress it up with your favourite linen and wall decor to suit your taste. As I have a soft spot for cool, calming blue I made the bed with a crisp Starlight Blue Striped Fitted Sheet and the matching Pinwheel Quilted Comforter by CoCaLo. Although this bed looks and feels like a ‘big’ bed, thanks to the 140x70cm mattress size you can continue to use your normal cot bed linen which is great news for the family budget.

We have purposely kept Hattie’s room simple but fun with the addition of two pieces from the Worlds Apart BearHug range. To help keep the room organised and to encourage Hattie to tidy up after play we decided on the BearHug Stack Storage, a clever and compact storage unit that holds all her toys and teddies. When in use the three cubes can be separated so she can access all her treasures, and when packed away the unit’s small footprint leaves the room spacious and clean.

Inspired by her older siblings Hattie loves to get crafty which can cause a bit of trouble when she gets her hands on special markers, glitter paint, important paperwork and glue or when she climbs upon our high dining chairs to sit at the big table. This child-proof BearHug Desk solves all our trouble, she can sit at a perfect toddler height, the seat doesn’t wobble or fall over and she has access to her own crayons and paper. I just love this little art desk, I can already tell it will be one of her favourite spots in the house.

To add a pop of colour and brighten the plain walls Hattie and I added a generous sprinkle of the Multi Glitter Confetti Dots, it is like the colours were made to match the BearHug range. I loved how well the removable RoomMates wall decals came up in our girls’ room a few months ago and how easy they were to apply, so it was an obvious choice for Harriet’s toddler room. With 180 stickers per pack there was plenty of glitter to go around, our older girls instantly claimed the left-over dots for their room.

Harriet’s new room has turned into a pretty, playful and peaceful place which we think she will love and hopefully having her own special sanctuary will help make the transition easy and fun during this tricky time of becoming an older sister.

Step inside Rose Petal Cottage

Isn’t it amazing how well the old man in red knows our children? Even though he only visits once a year he knows exactly what they’re into and how they like to spend their time. Beautifully wrapped and addressed to ‘the girls’ this large Worlds Apart gift delivered just the smiles we expected:

As soon as I laid eyes on the beautiful Rose Petal Cottage (Ages 2+) I could picture our four girls in there; making up stories, playing mums, dads, fairies and princesses, sharing secrets, having tea parties and enjoying the blessing that is sisters. Measuring a generous 108 x 98 x 70 cm in size this lovely home is spacious enough for siblings or friends to share and will provide hours and hours of pretend play fun.

While the old man with the white beard took all the credit for this amazing present Hip Daddy did the hard work and assembled the cottage so the adventure could begin. Setting up was a simple case of first connecting the metal pieces to build the cottage frame, then to slide the frame into the sturdy, wipe clean cover which zips up nice and snug so it stays in place perfectly.

What really makes Rose Petal Cottage so unique and special is that the decorative cover is printed with the loveliest little details on both the in- and outside. On the outside this delightful playhouse features cladded walls, a shingled roof, lanterns, birds, gumboots near the door, flowers and more. It’s pretty much the dreamy cottage you see in your favourite fairytales!

On the inside this sweet house is homey and welcoming with gorgeous details like a doormat, floorboards, a fireplace, a real mirror and a useable shelf complete with photo frame so you can display your favourite picture. It even has a window with country style shutters that open and close!

You can enter Rose Petal Cottage through the cottage door, which can be ‘locked’ with a latch. The door is attached with velcro so you can also remove it completely if you wish (something baby Harriet worked out very quickly). One of the metal poles is conveniently fitted with hinges, allowing you to fully open up the side of the cottage and in doing so extend your play area.

As a special bonus Rose Petal Cottage comes partially furnished with a homey cooking unit, perfect for whipping up a batch of pretend cookies, tasty muffins and yummy pies for little guests. The removable cooking unit has an oven door that really opens (you’ll find a cardboard muffin tray inside to get you started) and the stove top knobs turn like the real deal.

After five fabulous weeks of holidays I didn’t think the kids would be keen to return to school, but they were actually quite happy to go back. While they didn’t miss the math exercises and science class they couldn’t wait to join their favourite lunchtime activity called ‘Glee Club’, where they sing and dance until the bell puts a stop to it. Knowing how much they love singing and performing I had no doubt the kids would love the chance to record their efforts with SelfieMic:

selfiemicFrom the toy experts at Worlds Apart comes SelfieMic (RRP $39.95, ages 8+), a fun and fabulous craze that allows young talent to star in their own music videos. Based on the popular selfie stick concept this clever set combines an ear piece, microphone and extendable selfie stick to create an instant recording studio using the StarMaker mobile phone app, how cool is that?

selfiemic-packThe extensive StarMaker song library contains a selection of free tracks from popular artists as well as thousands of other hits and famous sing-along songs that can be downloaded using so-called ‘tokens’ or by becoming a StarMaker VIP member. When you purchase the SelfieMic kit you receive 1000 free in-app tokens and each time your record a track you earn even more, so you can keep growing your repertoire one song at a time.

Once you have perfected your performance you can share your talent with family, friends or even the world on the StarMaker website. You may just win a prize in the SelfieMic contest! Even though our children are a bit too young to know much about current music hits, that most certainly doesn’t stop them from having fun with SelfieMic: Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’, Little Mermaid’s ‘Under the Sea’ and of course ‘Happy’, you’re never too young to become a superstar!

A tidy house with Minnie Mouse

Worlds Apart

Whether it’s a piece of Lego, a Barbie shoe, a crayon stub or a scrap of paper, if you leave anything small on the floor Harriet is sure to find it. Now that our little Speedy Gonzalez can cross the room in the blink of an eye all non baby-friendly toys have been banned to the playroom so that the lounge room is safe all the time. Harriet’s own toys have found a neat new home too thanks to Worlds Apart:

Minnie Mouse 1 copy

This adorable Minnie Mouse 6-Bin Storage Unit (RRP $109.95) allows Harriet to have all her toys within reach and keep our living room tidy and organised at the same time. As small as she is she can easily see all of her toys and pick something she would like to play with, although just tipping out everything seems to be a favourite activity for our little mess-maker.

Minnie Mouse 2 copy

While the Storage Unit is compact in size (60 x 64 x 30cm) I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of storage space it offers, you can fit quite a lot in the six boxes. The fact that the boxes are made of fabric (as opposed to hard plastic) is a big plus for me, it makes them soft to touch and quiet in use. Sometimes I take out one of the boxes and sit her down with it to browse through and play with, it keeps her busy and makes tidying up simple too.

MInnie Mouse 3 copy

The Minnie Mouse Storage Unit comes as a flat-pack and is very easy to put together, the MDF frame is sturdy yet lightweight so you can simply lift it up and move it around the house if needed. The unit is the perfect height for young children, allowing them to safely reach the top boxes and see inside and therefore reducing the chance of accidents.

Minnie Mouse 4 copy

And of course the design is not just practical, with its bright, inviting girly colours and cute Minnie Mouse print with floral details this toy storage unit is every little girl’s dream. It would look lovely in a bedroom, playroom or even the living room and it suits a range of ages. Hattie’s older sisters Sybil (3), Juliet (almost 6) and Olivia (almost 8) are all asking for a ‘Minnie Mouse cupboard’ for their own bedroom, it’s a hit with everyone!

Not into Minnie Mouse? Don’t worry, Worlds Apart has all little Disney fans covered. The Bin Storage System is available in other licensed Disney characters too eg. Disney Princesses, Monsters University and Cars, which one is your favourite?

Get Go

Getting dressed in the bedroom, doing the washing in the laundry, brushing the girls’ hair in the bathroom, putting clothes away in the wardrobe, making lunch in the kitchen… these everyday tasks are normally quick and easy, except when you have a cheeky 7-month old who is on the move…

Get Go Ball Pit 5

Harriet is getting around pretty speedy these days so I need to make sure I have an eye on her all the time. Instead of lugging around a heavy highchair or bulky rocker to entertain her we’ve found a super fun, fast and featherlight solution to keep her happy so I can quickly get things done.

Get Go Ball Pit 3

The ‘Get Go’ Ball Pit Bag (RRP $59.95, 6 months+) by Worlds Apart is a light-weight pop-up ball pit that provides instant fun for little ones. It is a great all-in-one design that is a breeze to set-up and can be packed away in a flash too with all balls neatly tucked inside. The bag closes using four simple press studs and when you undo them the ball pit almost automatically pops open, it even has a handle so you can carry it with ease.

Get Go Ball Pit 2

When folded the Ball Pit Bag is nice and compact but it surprising spacious when opened up, there is even room for two babies to play together so it’s perfect for little visitors! The older kids like playing with Hattie from the sidelines too by putting balls through the holes on the side and returning any balls that have escaped (thankfully she is not into throwing just yet!). The sides are the perfect height to keep the balls in whilst allowing the child to easily peek over the edge and keep an eye on mum.

Get Go Ball Pit 4
The Ball Pit Bag comes ready-to-play with 50 coloured balls, this leaves more than enough room for your baby to comfortably sit or lay in the ball pit and move around. Of course you can always add another layer of fun by adding more balls, these can be purchased separately.

Worlds Apart

After what feels like a very long week I am so glad it is finally weekend. I missed out on a Mother’s Day sleep-in last week so hopefully I can sneak in a snooze today or tomorrow. Getting our cheeky Sybil to stay in bed once we’ve put her down is not always easy but with a few little tricks we’re finally getting there. Our new helper is pink, totally adorable and loves jumping in muddy puddles, any guesses on what could it be?

Peppa 1

This gorgeous Worlds Apart Go Glow Buddy was received with open arms by our biggest Peppa Pig fan. In fact, when she opened up her new night light she wanted to go to bed immediately even though it was only midday. Who wouldn’t if they had a cute bedtime pal like this to light up the room and keep them company?

Peppa 4

The Peppa Pig Go Glow Buddy (RRP $39.95, ages 2+) is designed with little people in mind, she is easy to hold, lightweight, soft to touch and simple to use. Not only is she a sweet night light that gives a warm, pinkish glow, if you pick her up she instantly turns into a clever torch with a bright beam shining from the bottom (perfect for playing blanket forts, treasure hunts and shadow puppets).

Peppa 2

The Go Glow Buddy is cordless so you can easily move it around and works on 3AAA batteries. When in nightlight mode Peppa will automatically switch off after 15 minutes to save you battery, 5 minutes when in torch mode. She can be turned back on by pressing a simple button underneath. Sybbie can carry Peppa from room to room and take her along for midnight bathroom breaks, very handy.
