The door has been dusted, the key has been polished and the lock has been oiled, it’s time for the famous Disney vault to open once again and release another true Disney classic:

Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray

Awoken by the recent theatrical release of Disney’s Maleficent this time the spotlight will be on Sleeping Beauty, back where it all started. The world first met this lovely Disney princess in 1959 and now 55 years later the beautiful Aurora is back for a reprise. This complete digital restoration and crystal clear high definition is sure to capture the hearts of young girls and reignite the flame within their mothers, after all, who wouldn’t fall in love with a princess this sweet?

At first it looks like everyone at the castle is busy celebrating the birth of little princess Aurora but it appears not everyone is excited about the new arrival. Just as the third and last of her fairy godmothers is about to give her blessing the evil Maleficent, angry for not being invited to the party, shows up and takes revenge by casting a spell on the innocent baby. Aurora is destined to die on her 16th birthday by pricking her finger on a spinning wheel.

Luckily there is one blessing left and the lovely fairies decide to use it to weaken the spell so that Aurora can be aroused from her sleep by a true loves kiss. To keep Aurora safe from Maleficent the three god fairies take her away and hide her in a small cottage in the woods until her 16th birthday when she is finally allowed to return to the castle. Sadly the powers of evil are too strong and Aurora is drawn to the cursed spinning wheel in the castle tower, sending her and everyone else in the castle into a deep, deep sleep…

Of course there is a prince, there always is, this time his name is prince Phillip and he is on a mission to find the girl of his dreams. Will he manage to fight the evil Maleficent and make his way to the castle to kiss his Sleeping Beauty back to life?

Sleeping Beauty will be available on DVD ($39.95) and Blu-ray ($49.95) at major retailers across Australia from August 13, 2014.

Last week I told you about Beauty and the Beast returning to the Disney vault on July 31 but that is not the only Disney classic to be locked away for who knows how long. It is also time for the true classic Bambi to disappear behind the heavy vault door, this is one Disney movie that every family with little ones should own.

Now Bambi has a special place in my heart as when I was a child I always wanted to have a baby deer of my own. My beautiful brother, who at the time had big plans to become a ranger when he grew up, promised to catch me a baby deer. I have never forgotten and we still laugh about it sometimes. Somehow we never worried about separating the baby deer from its mother, only after watching Bambi we realised that maybe it wasn’t such a good plan after all.

Disney’s Bambi was first released back in 1942 and 70 years later the story about the adorable white-tailed deer Bambi is still a big favourite in households all over the world. Over time Bambi has become a real phenomenon with many people big and small (me included) referring to any deer as Bambi.

The story starts deep in the forest with Bambi’s birth, everyone loves the sweet baby deer with his wobbly legs and all the forest animals follow his every move. The forest if full of interesting things to discover and soon he makes two friends: Thumper the Rabbit and Flower the Skunk. But there is more, he also has a first encounter with the beautiful Faline, a gorgeous doe-fawn.

I am glad all my kids see is the many cute animals and the friendship between them but in all fairness it has to be said that it is not all frolics and fun in the forest. When a hunter enters the woods Bambi and his mother run to get away but when Bambi finally reaches a safe hiding place his mum is no where to be seen. What will happen to Bambi now, will he be reunited with Thumper and Flower, and what about the lovely Faline?

Bambi is available on Blu-ray ($49.95) or DVD ($39.95) and is on sale at major retailers across Australia until July 31, 2012.

As a child my youngest sister and I dreamed of owning all the big Disney movies on video, we knew all the stories and songs by heart (I am surprised how many of the songs I still remember!). Now that I have kids myself and see how much they enjoy the Disney movies I am determined to get my hands on all the big titles so we can watch them together. But that is easier said than done as not all Disney movies are permanently available, some have already returned to the Disney vault and who knows if and when they will become available again?

One of those titles that will soon go back into the vault is Beauty and the Beast, so make sure you grab it while you still can. I think we all remember Belle, a lovely girl who lives with her father in a small village. Everyone loves Belle, including the horrible and very unlikeable Gaston who seems to think Belle would make the perfect wife for him. One day Belle’s father ends up in a mysterious, dark castle where he is being held by a frightening Beast.

Loyal as she is Belle offers to take her father’s place, promising to stay in the castle for the rest of her life. So who exactly is the unfriendly Beast and what is the secret behind the beautiful rose he is protective of? Belle is not impressed by the unfriendly Beast, luckily there is the enchanted castle staff to make her life more bearable.

Against her expectations Belle and the Beast start to grow closer and form a friendship, he even lets her leave to help her dying father. The Beast realises he is falling in love with Belle, and the Beast has stolen Belle’s heart too. When Gaston discovers this he plans an attack on the Beast and gathers a mob to help him. Will this be the end of the love story of Belle and the Beast, or will real love conquer and maybe, just maybe, lift the magic spell that has held the castle and the Beast in its grip for way too long?

As a child I never knew how the Beast became the way he was, I don’t think it ever mattered to me and in their turn my twins have no idea either. All they see is the beautiful Belle, the absolutely gorgeous castle staff and the character transformation of the Beast. In their words ‘At first he was grumpy and angry and Belle made him happy’, and in the end isn’t that just a wonderful message?

Beauty and the Beast is available on Blu-ray ($49.95) or DVD ($39.95) and is on sale at major retailers across Australia until July 31, 2012.
