And then they were nine… It’s hard to believe that those teeny tiny premmie twins have grown into beautiful, delightful 9-year olds, each with a different personality but so wonderful in their own way. I won’t lie, I find it hard to see them grow up so fast and letting them go into the big scary world that is out there. As a mother of four girls (and a boy) I am always looking for ways to inspire my little ladies and help them grow into strong, confident women, which is why I was so excited to discover the Girl Hero Project:

Powered by Australian author Susannah McFarlane, who you may know from her successful book series EJ12, the Girl Hero Project is a brand new online space dedicated to tween girls and their parents. Susannah’s vision for the platform is to offer a safe, age-appropriate environment where girls can go to hear a different dialogue around what it means to be a girl, to encourage girls to speak up, get active in their communities, to inspire them to write, play and learn that they are never too small to do big things.

It is no secret that tween and teen girls are struggling in today’s society, and that building their confidence and self-esteem from an early age is incredibly important. The Girl Hero Project doesn’t waste words on all the superficial things society cares for, and instead focusses on strong, inspirational girls who make a difference in their community and the world, who lift others up instead of breaking them down and who, as young as they are, build long-lasting legacies.

By becoming a Girl Hero you can learn about other inspirational girl heroes, read and share helpful inspirations and tips, create affirmations for yourself and your friends that empower and lift you up, join in the writing competition and much more. And the best part is, everyone can join in and it is completely free!

As a special treat for Hip Little One readers author Susannah McFarlane is kindly giving away a copy of her fabulous book EJ Girl Hero – Hot and Cold to the first 10 Hip Little One readers who join the Girl Hero Project. As if you needed another reason to get your girl(s) involved with this awesome movement! For your chance to score this fantastic read for FREE simply become a Girl Hero here and enter the promo code ‘HLO17’ during sign up. Good luck!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Did you know there are only 4 weeks left of this school term? Before you know it it’s time for Summer holidays and we’ve found the perfect holiday read that is sure to keep the kids quiet (aside from a loud laugh here and there!), check out the newest title in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series:

The Long Haul

Author Jeff Kinney has gained a huge following through his best selling Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series and fans around the globe have waiting for Dairy of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (RRP $14.99) to hit the shelves. Great news, you can stop counting down because it’s here!

For Greg Heffley it’s school holidays too and he is looking forward to doing absolutely nothing, except his mum has different ideas and decides to take the family on a road trip. Inspired by her favourite family magazine she has come well prepared with healthy snacks, a potty for Manny, interesting and educational car games, a Spanish language course and of course a ban on electronic devices, not exactly things Greg gets excited about.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Of course it wouldn’t be Diary of a Wimpy Kid worthy if the road trip wasn’t full of interesting and hilarious events. From stinky socks and fried butter on a stick to a bearded (and rather frightening) stranger and even a little piggy passenger, the Heffley family road trip is one that has to be read to be believed. Priced at $14.99 The Long Haul is a fabulous stocking filler for your young reader.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Back in 2007 the world was first introduced to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, now six years and eight titles later the Dairy of a Wimpy Kid book series is more popular than ever with more than 3 million copies sold in Australia alone. Talented author Jeff Kinney has proven that even reluctant readers are keen to get stuck into a book as long as they feel connected to the story and it comes with lots of humour, and you have to admit: We’ve all felt like a wimpy kid sometimes!

Wimpy Kid Hard LuckFans worldwide have been counting down the days and this month it was finally time for the big reveal, the eighth and latest addition to the series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, has been released and people are going crazy for it. In Hard Luck Greg is not too thrilled to lose his best friend Rowley… to a GIRL. Now that Abigail is in the picture their friendship is not what it used to be and Greg is not impressed by the changes. Cool bud Rowley no longer exists, it’s ‘Rowligail’ now.

Hard Luck 1

As we all know everyone needs a good friend to walk to school with, to help you with your homework and to sit next to during lunch. It’s time for Greg to find a new mate but that is not as easy as it sounds, even the Find-a-Friend Station in the playground doesn’t bring in any good candidates. Join Greg on his quest for a friend, become part of the Heffley family, see what the cool (and not so cool) kids get up to at school and, most importantly, get ready for lots of laughs.

Hard Luck 2

Because our kids are yet to start school I had never actually read a Wimpy Kid book myself, but after seeing a few sneak peeks here and there I immediately got why children and teens can’t get enough of these hilarious diaries. When kids open a Wimpy Kid book it doesn’t ‘feel’ like a book at all, it’s a unique combination of funny illustrations and short commentary describing the day-to-day life of ordinary teenagers just like them. Priced at just $14.99 (paperback) or $17.99 (hardback) the Wimpy Kid books are the perfect stocking filler for that hard-to-buy-for tween or teen, especially those who are usually not too keen on reading.

If you have a cool tween in the family you might be struggling with your Christmas shopping, usually they are not that easy to buy for. Any smart person would know to stay away from clothing (because admit it, we just don’t get the latest teenage fashion) and no one likes giving a boring gift voucher or (even worse) money in an envelope. One thing everyone agrees on is that most tweens like to lounge around and that you can’t go wrong with denim, so how about this hip denim bean chair as a Christmas gift idea?

Cloud Chair Bean Bag

The Cloud Chair Bean Bag by Life! Live It Up ($49.95) is comfortable and stylish, made with durable denim fabric and it suits both genders. It even has a special storage pocket on the side, perfect for the remote, phone or music player.

By now many mums have discovered Since We Were Kids as the Australian home of Chewable Jewels, BooginHead and Psi Bands, three fantastic international brands that have become very popular with Aussie families. Since We Were Kids owner Susan is always on the hunt for unique products that make your life that little bit easier or add a stylish touch and recently she has brought two new labels to our shores: Moodeez and Diapees and Wipees.

Moodeez products are designed for teenage girls and women so they can store, protect and keep their tampons, pads and liners organised and clean. Every day women all over the world reach in their handbag for a tampon or pad only to find out the wrapping has come undone and the item has become dirty and useless. All women know how annoying that is, so luckily that scenario belongs to the past when you start using Moodeez.

A Moodeez can hold 4-5 tampons and small pads, enough for a day out. Keep your Moodeez stocked and in your handbag and you’ll never get caught out, you’ll be prepared every month. Speaking of getting caught out, Moodeez are not just practical but they look good too and keep your personal items out of sight from others. They are available in different colours and patterns to suit your style or your bag.

There are two different Moodeez products, the original Moodeez ($17.95) and waterproof Moodeez ($21.95), and 6 different prints to choose from. With Valentine’s Day in mind (yes, it really is next week so hurry if you haven’t gotten your loved ones a present yet) Since We Were Kids has kindly offered a sweet Heart to Heart Moodeez for one lucky Hip little one reader. Because we can all use some extra ‘love’ during that time of the month.
