When I walked (or should I say waddled?) into the delivery room at almost 41 weeks pregnant I loudly informed Hip Daddy that, compared to my five previous pre-term babies, this one was surely going to kill me. At the time the midwives reassured me that the baby would be average in size, but when our boy weighed in at a whopping 4.6kg (10lbs 3oz) I couldn’t help but think ‘I told you so!’. Now that Ted is 2 weeks old I am feeling a bit more like my old self and our big chubby bundle of joy is an absolute delight who feeds and sleeps like a champ, most of the time…

All six of our babies have been swaddled from birth (some even up to 10 months+) and I found it extremely helpful in establishing a good bedtime routine. As soon as those wriggly little arms and kicking legs are snuggly wrapped our little boy calms down and drifts off to sleep, here he is on cloud 9 with ergoPouch.

With its super clever 2-in-1 design the ergoPouch Cocoon Swaddle + Sleep Bag (RRP $34.95- $44.95, ages 0-12 months) is the ultimate womb-to-world sleep solution for young families. You can start using the Cocoon immediately from birth (Minimum baby weight 3kg) as a swaddle, keeping arms safely tucked inside whilst the bell-shaped bottom leaves plenty of room for hips and legs to move freely.

If you’re put off by all the folds, twists and tucks of traditional swaddling with a large piece of fabric you will absolutely love the ease of the Cocoon, just zip up and you’re done. Strong little Houdinis won’t be able to escape from their Cocoons, allowing both baby and parents to get a proper sleep without endless re-wrapping. Midnight nappy checks are a breeze too, as you can use the two-way zip to quickly check the bottom half without having to take off the whole Cocoon.

As your baby gets bigger and moves on from being swaddled you can use the same Cocoon as a sleep bag by opening up the arms with the handy armhole poppers. You can even choose for a slow transition and free up one arm at a time, how easy is that? There is no need to buy different products and you can change back and forth as needed, making the Cocoon a budget-friendly investment for new parents.

To ensure a comfortable temperature at any climate you can choose from a 0.2 TOG or 1.0 TOG rating. Made from breathable organic cotton (0.2 TOG) or a soft organic cotton/bamboo blend (1.0 TOG), with a touch of elastane for extra stretch, the Cocoon Swaddle + Sleep Bag is ideal for sensitive newborn skin. The ergoPouch Cocoon is currently available in six stylish prints to suit boys and girls.

Sleep, what can I say… As a mum of five I get very little of it, in fact I can’t even remember the last time I slept a whole night without being woken by one or more of my beautiful children. Many people think it’s newborn babies who cause all these broken nights, but not in our house. We have swaddled all our little ones from birth and found it worked a treat, the night time trouble only started once they grew out of the wrap…

sleepy-hugs-pastel-flags

Going from the snug, safe haven of a swaddle to the big, wide world of flapping arms and kicking legs is a tricky and tiring transition for precious bundles and their parents. Thankfully Baby Loves Sleep owner and Aussie mama Lourdes, also known by her nickname Malou, is coming to the rescue of tired families across the country with this clever invention:

sleepy-hugs-greyThe unique, patent pending Sleepy Hugs sleep suit is designed to help you to gently and safely move away from the tight swaddle whilst maintaining that comforting, cosy feeling that so many babies need to get into a restful, deep sleep. The enclosed wing-like sleeves mimic the ‘restricted’ feel of a traditional swaddle without limiting arm movement and the spacious, wide sack allows for plenty of hip movement (and even a hip dysplasia harness).

Made from 100% soft, breathable cotton fabric Sleepy Hugs are perfect for the sensitive skin of newborns and those suffering from eczema and other skin conditions. Even better, thanks to the closed-in design small hands are kept safely away from the face to avoid scratching. To make midnight nappy changes as quick and easy as possible you can zip the suit open from the bottom, so convenient! Here’s to long nights and lazy naps for everyone…

sleepy-hugs-range

The Sleepy Hugs sleep suit (RRP $59.95, ages 3 months – 12 months+) is currently available in four stylish designs to suit both boys and girls. Whether you live in a cold or hot climate, with both an Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer weight to choose from you can rest assured your Sleepy Hugs suit will keep your baby comfortable all night long.

Unless you have been living under a rock, if you are an expecting or new mum you have most likely heard of Australian label Love To Dream. Their gorgeous range of easy swaddles and sleeping bags is helping babies (and parents!) all over the country get some much needed zzz whilst being comfortable, safe and stylish.

The Swaddle Up Original, a Love To Dream top-seller, is hugely popular all year around and this season Swaddle Up fans are in for a treat with a very special limited edition design. Featuring a trendy denim, aqua and white stripe print the new Denim Swaddle Up is perfect for both boys and girls or of course little surprise babies like our own!

LTD DenimSo what’s the Swaddle Up excitement all about? The Swaddle Up (RRP $39.95-$41.95, from 2kg- 11kg) is an easy-to-use, quick, fool-proof, zip-up baby swaddle that encourages self soothing by allowing baby to sleep with its hands up. Some parents and carers finds all the folding, stretching and tucking of traditional wrapping with a large piece of fabric a little tricky, well none of that hassle with Swaddle Up. Simply place your baby in the swaddle, do up the zip and you’re done!

Made from soft and stretchy cotton-elastane fabric the Swaddle Up provides little ones with that snug, safe swaddling feeling whilst leaving enough space for growing hips to wiggle (unlike conventional tight wraps that may restrict hip movement and could potentially do serious harm). Thanks to the two-way zip midnight nappy changes are a breeze and there is even a handy opening for your stroller straps, that way your baby can stay asleep on the go too.

I have a confession to make: I am addicted to buying Aden + Anais swaddles. Whether I am pregnant or not, the sight of all those gorgeous Aden + Anais wraps always make my heart beat a little faster and I simply can’t resist buying a few more. While I have plenty of wraps left from our last bubba I have already put away some more for our new arrival, my best excuse was that they were on sale!

Aden + Anais Swaddles

Aden + Anais 4-pack Swaddles (from $27.45)

When people ask me about my number one must-have for a new baby I always vote for Aden + Anais wraps. They are such a useful, versatile, stylish and practical baby gift and you could easily use a few at the same time. When we have a new baby in the house we generally use one as a wrap, one as a sun cover on the pram, one as a mattress cover in the carrycot, one in my nappy bag and one for breastfeeding privacy and clean-ups. Now you can see why I need a whole stack of them!

When you don’t know the gender, you just have to buy both!

In my opinion Aden + Anais swaddles are always excellent value for money (they wash beautifully and really last) but of course it’s even better if you can stock up while they are on sale. If you are in need of some Aden + Anais goodies you better pop in at The Little Haven, who currently offer up to 50% off all Aden + Anais products. You can pick up a 4-pack of wraps for as little as $27.45, that’s an unbeatable price!

More Aden + Anais goodies on sale

We don’t know the gender of our new baby just yet but that hasn’t stopped me from shopping. With prices this good I grabbed both pinks and blues, after all we know one of them will have to be right. Aside from the swaddles you can also pick up Aden + Anais blankets, comforter toys, sleeping bags and wash cloths, all heavily reduced. Be quick as stock as limited and sure to sell out.

Big Baby Shower – Day 25

While most babies start off snug as a bug in a gorgeous swaddle they will all eventually move on, some a little sooner and some a little later. The logical next step is a sleeping bag that will still provide that cosy hug experience whilst leaving baby’s arms and legs free to move around. If your bub is ready to make the move during this chilly season you can keep him/her comfy and warm with this genius design from Love To Dream:

The innovative Love To Dream Inventa Sleep Bag (RRP $79.95) has a generous 2.5 TOG rating so little ones stay toasty on cold nights, yet thanks to the clever zipped design with mesh vents it is safe and suitable for warmer months too.

The Inventa Sleep Bag is so much more than just a plain, old sleeping bag, it’s fitted with handy features all around: Adjustable length to grow with your baby, easy press-studs on the shoulder, a seatbelt slit for travelling, protective zip covers, bottom opening for midnight nappy changes without waking baby and of course the mesh vents for a breeze of cool air… what more could you wish for?

Inventa

Made from soft brushed cotton (lining) with a natural, breathable bamboo fill this luxurious sleeping bag is gentle on your baby’s skin and airways, promoting a good, restful night sleep. The 2.5 Tog Inventa Sleep Bag is currently available in two sizes (4-12 months and 12-36 months) and 6 different colours/prints to suit both boys and girls.

Baby wraps? Stack them up I say! With every baby I have gained a few more baby wraps and I am sure this time around I will gather some more, they are just so handy! I’ll be honest, their many practical uses are great but it’s the beautiful prints and patterns that win me over again and again. Take a look at these gorgeous designs from Australian label gr8x:

gr8x wraps Ovals Seaspray Double Pack

Bird Attractiongr8x Double Stretch Swaddling Wraps (2-pack, RRP $35.95) are made from soft and breathable cotton with a touch of elastane for extra stretch and movement, in fact they stretch from 84 x 90cm to a generous 145cm to accommodate for a growing baby. The rounded corners are gentle against your baby’s skin and won’t go hard and stiff after washing, providing your baby with a comfortable and warm place to snuggle up.

Swedish EcoWe have swaddled all our babies from birth up to 10 months and I am hoping to do the same with our new addition.
