Starting at a new school is not easy, especially when you are only 5 years old and rather shy. Our miss Sybil has been working hard on making new friends and is doing well, although it does make her a little sad when her class mates struggle to remember how to pronounce her name. Sizzle, single, simple… we’ve heard them all and the latest addition is Cyril. Initially she was upset, but I quickly turned that frown upside down with this gorgeous picture book by Emily Gravett:

I read a lot of children’s books but I think Cyril and Pat (RRP $24.99) is my new favourite. This fabulous picture book, filled with the sweetest illustrations tells the story of Cyril, a cheeky little squirrel, who forms a special (and rather unusual) friendship with a rat called Pat. Against the odds, and against what others may think of this unlikely couple, the two make a great pair and love hanging out together. What a fantastic message: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Sometimes the most unlikely people turn out to be the best friends!

Written in a catchy rhyming manner and filled with detailed, colourful, eye catching illustrations this book is an absolute joy to read and our kids love listening to the melody of the story and predicting the words.

From the same skilful hand comes Old Hat (RRP $14.99), another sweet book with a empowering message hidden amongst the gorgeous illustrations. Harbet the Dog wears a cosy knitted hat, handmade for him by his nana. Harbet is totally content with his hat, until others start commenting on his ‘old hat’. The teasing leads Harbet on a journey of trying to fit in, always searching for the latest, trendiest item to wear on his head.

There are so many colourful, quirky, unique hat styles, little readers will adore Emily’s creations. However no matter how hard Harbet tries, somehow he always ends up with an ‘old hat’. Thankfully in the end Harbet stops trying to fit in and learns a valuable lesson: You are perfect just the way you are!

Empowering Resources

One day someone asked me why we chose to have a larger family, as surely after two children ‘you’ve seen it all before’. Some may feel this way but as a mother of five I strongly disagree, I love all their different personalities, their quirky habits and watching them grow and develop into beautiful individuals. Sadly there is a lot of pressure on children to fit into a standard mould instead of celebrating diversity which is why I absolute love this Empowering Resources book:

You're Different, Jemima

In You’re Different, Jemima (RRP $17) we meet a gorgeous girl called Jemima who is enthusiastic, full of ideas and has a big imagination. Sadly her teacher is not so appreciative of Jemima’s excitement, she insists Jemima fits in with the rest of the class and slowly Jemima is starting to lose her spark… Thankfully a lovely new teacher sees Jemima’s differences as qualities, celebrates her uniqueness and she encourages Jemima to be her-special-self.

I think as parents we all see things in our children that are a little ‘different’ and at times we may worry that this will make them stand out. Let’s stop seeing different as negative and turn things around, different is awesome!

Top 5 Books for the Easter Break

Dymocks

You’d think our kids would be excited about the prospect of no school for two weeks, but they’re actually a little sad. They very much enjoy school and they particularly love our (almost daily) visits to the library. If your kids are avid readers too make sure you pick up some great new reads to keep them entertained during the holidays.

Here are our top 5 books for the Easter break:

Tiny TimmyNot a day goes by where our 7-year old son doesn’t read a book or two, he is known to even read a book while walking to school! He also loves to kick the footy with his friends so Tim Cahill’s latest book Tiny Timmy Makes the Grade! (RRP $12.99) really is the best of both worlds. If your sporty kid needs a bit of encouragement to open a book this is an excellent pick that is sure to win them over.

Tim is determined to make it onto the famous rep team, but first he will have prove his worth on the field. Earning a spot in the school squad is not easy so he better put his best foot (and his head!) forward if he wants to succeed. It’s a great story about teamwork, perseverance, doing your best and of course being active, something all kids can learn a lot from.  Featuring a fun, appealing font and filled with cool illustrations this Tiny Timmy adventure reads very easily, even the most stubborn reader will read his way through all 124 pages without realising.

Room on the BroomLearning to read is a tricky job and can be quite exhausting too so our miss 5 is not always in the mood to do her reading before bed. We find the best way to keep her focussed is by choosing a book about something she already knows and loves, it makes the story much more fun and real. She has seen Room on the Broom (RRP $14.95) on TV before and thinks it is terribly funny (and a little scary too!) so this is a real winner!

Written by Julia Donaldson (creator of The Gruffalo) this gorgeous book is a joy to read and listen to. It tells the story of a witch on a flying broomstick, who picks up a bunch of interesting passengers on her way. The text flows beautifully and rhymes, which invites young listeners to join in and ‘guess’ the next word. The pictures are colourful and detailed so there is lots to look at and spot on every page.

Pig the PugNext up is miss Sybbie (3), our little busy-bee who struggles to sit still. She recently spotted Pig the Pug (RRP $16.99) at the ‘big school’ so she thinks it is pretty awesome that we now have it in our own ‘library’ at home as well. We have read Aaron Blabey’s hilarious book ‘The Brothers Quibble’ over and over again and his writing style is so appealing to kids, he really knows how to engage young children.

This interesting looking character is called Pig the Pug, a round and wrinkly dog who hates sharing his food or toys with anyone. Then Trevor, a friendly sausage dog, comes along… will Pig learn to share and play together after all?

Dear ZooRight now she’s more into chewing books than reading them but, if she is anything like her siblings, I am sure it won’t be long until baby Harriet falls in love with reading too. Dear Zoo (RRP $14.99) by Rod Campbell is a great choice for the smallest family members, this sturdy board book introduces children to different animals and their characteristics through a fun game of lift-the-flap. Can you guess what animal is behind the flap?

If I Were The Easter BunnyJust in time for Easter we can’t go past If I were the Easter Bunny (RRP $14.99) by Louise Gardner, a colourful hardcover picture book about an exciting egg hunt, scrumptious chocolate eggs, fun and games in the park, pretty handmade bonnets and of course the Easter parade, after all the best Easter is one spent with friends. What would this weekend look like if you were the Easter bunny?

The book experts at Dymocks are here to help you stock your bookshelf in time for the upcoming school holidays with this awesome book deal: Buy 3 picture books for just $30! There are more than 30 great titles to choose from, offer ends end of April.

ENJO Floor Cleaner (+ special ENJO offer!)

ENJO

Earlier in the year I told you how we keep our kitchen clean, shiny and germ free the natural way with Enjo. Ever since we discovered the magic of Enjo Fibres I have been tossing up about the Enjo Floor Cleaner; our floors need cleaning every single day (sometimes even twice or three times a day), it looks so easy to use and if it works as well as our Enjo Kitchen Glove and Cloths it would be absolutely perfect, but is it worth the expense?

As you know I like to do my research and compare my options before I buy so it is important to know what makes the Enjo Floor Cleaner (RRP $99) different than regular floor cleaners. The extra long Enjo Floor Cleaner Handle is light in weight, simple to assemble and use, comfortable to hold and manoeuvre and it slides under furniture easily. Giving the kitchen floor a quick wipe down after dinner takes just a few short minutes and requires very little effort making it ideal for busy mums and dads and well lived-in kitchens like ours. However the real difference is in the special Enjo Floor Fibres you use to wipe the floor with.

Enjo Floor FibresI know it is hard to believe, and I didn’t believe it either until I witnessed it with my own eyes, but Enjo Fibres work their magic with just a squirt of water. There is no need for nasty chemicals or detergent, there is no sticky residue and you can reuse the fibres over and over again, just wash them in the your washing machine and you’re ready for your next clean. Using nothing but water Enjo Fibres remove 95-100% of bacteria so can keep your home healthy and clean and children and pets can play on the floor safely.

There are six different Enjo Floor Fibres (RRP $99) to choose from, each type of fibre suits a different floor type so you can achieve perfect results on every floor. Wooden floors, tiles, bamboo, vinyl, lino, marble, concrete, there is an Enjo Floor Fibre that is right for you. The cleaner head simply slides into the floor fibre like an envelope and you’re good to go, unlike disposable wipes that come undone easily and need ‘tucking in’ repeatedly the Enjo Floor Fibre stays perfectly in place no matter what angle you use it on or how hard you push. When you’re done just unlock the cleaner head with your foot to remove the floor fibre for rinsing or washing.

Enjo Floor Cleaner Pack

The verdict? Considering the impressive 3-year life span of Enjo Fibres, the eliminated need for special floor cleaners and wipes full of nasty chemicals, the absence of chemical residue afterwards and the ease of use (and less waste) compared to other alternatives on the market the Enjo Floor Cleaner is well worth the investment. Yes it is a big expense at first but now I won’t have to buy any floor cleaning products for 3 years and it is healthier for my family too! Christmas has come early for me and I couldn’t be happier with our new floor cleaner.

Receive a FREE Limited Edition Green Floor Cleaner (RRP $99) when you buy any two Enjo Floor Fibres. Offer is valid while stock lasts so be quick and order your preferred Floor Fibres today.
