After almost 10 years in Australia I feel quite settled but obviously there is still plenty left for me to learn and discover, especially when it comes to Australia’s history. Sometimes we forget about the first owners of this amazing country and how much things changed for them over time, which is why The Secret River was such an eye-opener for me. Whether you have read Kate Grenville’s award-winning novel or not, you are sure to be very impressed by it’s incredibly moving TV adaption:

The Secret River DVD

When I started watching The Secret River I had no idea what to expect, but the story grabbed me from the first minute. Spread out over two 90-minute episodes we follow the Thornhill’s, an early convict colonist family, as they set foot on Australian soil and settle down in New South Wales.

The Secret River

By claiming ‘his’ piece of land alongside the beautiful Hawkesbury River a determined William Thornhill is working towards a better future for his growing family, yet at the same time his actions (and those of fellow colonists) are robbing Indigenous Australians of what is rightfully theirs. This fight for precious land and a future away from the poverty they knew back home is not easy, William is trying to do the best for his family but the battle comes with plenty of moral dilemmas. How far will a man go to give his family the life he dreams of?

The Secret River Thornhill

If you’ve always wanted to understand a bit more of what Australia was like in those days of the early settlers you are sure to appreciate The Secret River. It is hard not to be moved by the desperation, dreams, frustration, hopes, disappointments, loyalty, determination, sadness and love the Thornhill family goes through and the story will stay with you long after the credits have stopped rolling.

The Secret River is available on DVD (RRP $29.95) at major retailers across Australia.
