VTech Secret Safe

It has taken her almost two whole terms but miss Sybbie is finally managing a tear-free and no-panic school drop off most days! We’ve worked very hard to get to this point and I am so proud of her (but also of myself) for persevering, there were so many tears and we even considered taking her out of school all together. I have to admit we pulled out all the bribes to win her over and Sybil has been rather spoilt but it was for a good cause. Who wouldn’t try their best when this gorgeous VTech gift is up for grabs?

With its pretty pink colour, swirly design and heart shaped window this VTech Secret Safe (RRP $69.95, ages 6-11) instantly brought a sparkle to Sybil’s eye. She’s been having loads of fun discovering this girly gadget and with 7 different activities and games there is still plenty more to learn. (In fact Sybil loves it so much that she’s been trying to sneak it to school several times, but of course this mama is not that easily fooled!

As the name suggests the ‘Secret Safe’ Diary Selfie Music is brilliant at keeping your secrets safe and secure. Protected with super smart facial technology and/or a number password only the true owner is able to unlock the magic, now that’s clever! Behind the sweet pink cover hides a full colour screen where you can write diary entries, record voice messages and (using the front/back cameras) take selfies, photos and videos so you can put together your very own special journal. You can even decorate your snaps with cool effects and cute add-ons.

Typing/spelling is not Sybil’s strongest point but her visual diary is coming along beautifully and I just love seeing our days from her perspective and sharing in her highlights and favourite moments. With the help of the clock and alarm she knows exactly what time to get up for school or when to get ready for an outing. Add to that a real ‘address book’ and she’s becoming quite the secretary, I guess you’re never too young to be organised.

But there is way more to discover and do than just keep a diary. The Secret Safe is fitted with a music player with 4 built-in songs (you can add your own too), you can raise three virtual pets, play one of eight different learning games and other fun activities. By playing the games kids can practice typing, solve a sudoku puzzle , do maths exercises, work on spelling and train other handy skills.

Sybil’s top three of things to do on her ‘Secret Safe’ Diary Selfie Music are playing fashion designer in the My Stylist app (it’s like stepping into a virtual dressing room and trying on all kinds of fancy clothes and accessories), caring for her pet puppy and singing along to all her High School Musical tunes. By adding in a microSD card we’ve given her even more storage for more secrets and more smiles.

Ready, Set, Action with Kidizoom

Growing up in The Netherlands our Christmas holidays only lasted two weeks, so for me it still feels a little strange to have 6 long weeks of school holidays this time of year. Not that my kids are complaining, they love the summer holidays and having a brand new selection of Christmas presents to play with makes it extra fun! For master 10 this Vtech gift was an absolute winner and he has used it every single day so far:

The Kidizoom Action Cam 180° (RRP $89.95, ages 5+) is a compact, light, kid-friendly camera that is built for adventures. Fitted with a cool 180° rotatable lens that simply flips from front to back you will never miss a perfect picture or special selfie again, just point and click!

With the help of special effects, self-timer, background music, time-lapse and stop/slow/fast motion you can turn your photos and videos into unique pieces of art and fancy action shots. You can then share your files with your family and friends by exporting them to your computer. This is such a great way for my family in The Netherlands to see bits of our life in Australia, as seen through the eyes of the kids (instead of us adults). At 128MB the camera’s internal memory is not huge, however if you want to store more videos and photos you can expand the memory with a microSD card (not supplied).

Whether you are taking snaps at home, videoing a song or dance, recording your latest skateboard trick, cruising the bike track or even splashing at the pool or beach Kidizoom is always ready for action. Of course we wouldn’t want you to your ride your bike handsfree or lose your balance on your scooter so the Kidizoom Action Cam includes a handy bicycle mount that allows you to attach the camera to your bike or scooter. The mount is super easy to install and to use, in fact you don’t even need a screwdriver to set it up!

Because VTech knows active Aussie kids absolutely love the water the Kidizoom Action Cam 180° also comes with a special waterproof case that enables you to take your camera to the pool or beach and make the most amazing underwater photos and videos (up to 6 feet under water). Our kids can’t wait to test this out on our next trip to the beach! Swimming, snorkeling, fishing, or even surfing or paddle boarding (using the included adhesive mount), you’ll be able to record and relive your favourite watersport memories whenever you want.

But there is more, aside from taking photos and videos you can also use the Action Cam 180° to play three fun games: Ocean Dive, Forest Quest and Unicycle Challenge. Forest Quest is miss 5’s top pick, she loves moving the camera around to look through the binoculars and hunt for forest creatures. The built-in games are a fabulous boredom buster for long drives and have saved us from a lot of ‘are we there yet?’ questions these holidays.

Budget-conscious parents will be pleased to know that there is no needed for expensive batteries, that somehow always seem to run out at the most inconvenient of times. The Kidizoom Action Cam 180° has a convenient rechargeable battery, allowing you to charge it over and over again with the included USB cable. If you have a USB car-charger you can even charge it on the way to your next adventure, how easy is that?

The verdict: We have found the Kidizoom Action Cam 180° very child friendly: it’s easy to set up and easy to use, in fact our 5-year old daughter barely needed any help and knew her way with the camera in no time. This offers a great feeling of independence and the kids are always very proud to show off their photo art, videos or animations they have made. The Action Cam has definitely become a must-have for our family adventures!

That’s it, the final school term of the year has begun! The big three kids have done incredibly well at school this year and we are so proud of them, they made some great new friends and brought home fantastic report cards and test results. As a reward for all their hard work (and to keep them busy in the school holidays) all of the kids were treated to a special present and with a brand new baby brother to photograph I am not surprised Olivia loves playing around with Kidizoom by VTech:

Packed with clever, cool and comic features the new VTech Kidizoom Duo (RRP $99.95, ages 3 to 9) turns creative kids into talented photographers in the blink of an eye. Here’s what we love most about Kidizoom:

As the name suggests this stylish kids camera has a dual lens, allowing kids to easily swap between making silly selfies and taking awesome snaps of friends, pets or family (especially cute baby siblings!), anytime they want. There is no need to turn your camera around and keep your fingers crossed that you get a great shot, a simple touch of a button is all it takes to change between the front- and rear facing camera.

The generous 2.4 inch colour screen, chunky shape and large buttons make it very easy for small hands to control the Kidizoom camera, our 4-year old mastered it in no-time and even our curious 2-year old will snap a picture or two if she can get her hands on it. Because we all know accidental knocks and drops are inevitable the Kidizoom Duo offers great peace of mind with a sturdy kid-tough design.

Olivia and her sisters have quickly become selfie-experts and they have the best time turning their selfies into art with the photo editor. There are loads of colourful decorations, pretty frames and silly dress-ups to choose from, so if you love photo booths and funny props Kidizoom has got you covered. How can you not giggle when giving your bald dad a funky hairdo or when your baby brother wears a big pink bow? Using the included USB cable all your Kidizoom creations can be transferred to your computer, ready to share with family and friends.

Not only can you capture precious moments on camera, you can even record your own voice, film your very own videos and create short movies. With the addition of special animations or funny effects you can turn average into awesome, flat into fun and plain into picture perfect, with the Kidizoom Duo the sky is the limit.  A real bonus treat are the 5 built-in games, they’re proving to be a great boredom buster on long car trips!

Powered by 4 AA batteries the VTech Kidizoom camera is ideal for use at home or holiday, just remember to pack some spare batteries or rechargeables so you don’t miss out on the shot of a lifetime! Hip tip: If desired you can expand the camera’s internal memory (ca. 200 photos) by adding a microSD or microSDHC card. The VTech Kidizoom Duo is available in blue or pink to suit both boys and girls.

After five fabulous weeks of holidays I didn’t think the kids would be keen to return to school, but they were actually quite happy to go back. While they didn’t miss the math exercises and science class they couldn’t wait to join their favourite lunchtime activity called ‘Glee Club’, where they sing and dance until the bell puts a stop to it. Knowing how much they love singing and performing I had no doubt the kids would love the chance to record their efforts with SelfieMic:

selfiemicFrom the toy experts at Worlds Apart comes SelfieMic (RRP $39.95, ages 8+), a fun and fabulous craze that allows young talent to star in their own music videos. Based on the popular selfie stick concept this clever set combines an ear piece, microphone and extendable selfie stick to create an instant recording studio using the StarMaker mobile phone app, how cool is that?

selfiemic-packThe extensive StarMaker song library contains a selection of free tracks from popular artists as well as thousands of other hits and famous sing-along songs that can be downloaded using so-called ‘tokens’ or by becoming a StarMaker VIP member. When you purchase the SelfieMic kit you receive 1000 free in-app tokens and each time your record a track you earn even more, so you can keep growing your repertoire one song at a time.

Little Live Pets

Christmas Countdown – Day 6

Last year in the lead up to Christmas I wrote about Little Live Pets and how much my girls loved playing with their little bird. To be honest at the time I was not sure how long their obsession would last and I did worry the bird would end up at the bottom of the toy box but I was wrong. One year later they have all acquired their own bird and still play with them a lot, in fact I think after this latest addition we officially need an aviary to house our flock:

Cleverkeet Blue

Cleverkeet (RRP $79.95, ages 5+) is one of the latest interactive toy pets to be added to the Little Live Pets family and the twitter on the street is that he is on top of many Christmas lists. From the moment this cheeky bird joined the club he has been hugely popular with many stores selling out in a flash.

Juliet Cleverkeet

Cleverkeet comes with his very own playground full of bird entertainment and has definitely had some more training than his little sibling: put him on the swing perch and he happily flaps his wings and swings back and forth, pop him on his dance perch and he grooves to the music (or your own music) or place him on the food perch and he’ll bend down for a treat, you can even sit him in his very own cart and he’ll get those wheels moving and scoots around like a pro. If you want to take your buddy for a walk you can clip him onto the hand perch and show him around.

Juliet Cleverkeet Pink

Just like the other Little Live Pets birds Cleverkeet loves to sing and chirp, but you can tell this smart bird has been working particularly hard on his communication skills as his ability to talk, listen and respond is impressive. You can for example pick your own name for him to which he will respond, you can ask him yes/no questions or you can teach him your own words so he will repeat them just like a real bird. Cleverkeet is soft to touch and responds to petting, his claws securely click onto the perches so he stays neatly in place during play time.

Cleverkeet PinkParents are big fans of Little Live Pets too: No food to buy, no vet bills to pay, no cages to clean, no walks in the rain and no chance of escaping, what’s not to love? If you are going away over the Christmas holidays you don’t need to hire a pet-sitter either, just take your favourite pet with you on your trip. Don’t tell the kids but you can turn Cleverkeet off too for a well deserved rest from all the playing.

Cleverkeet is currently available in blue and pink and works on 2 AAA batteries.
