Like most parents we always try to fulfil our children’s birthday wishes for as much as that is possible. It is obvious that snakes are out of the question (Juliet), iPads/iPhones not necessary (Tommie) and unicorns impossible to get your hands on (Harriet), however we never thought walkie talkies would be such a tricky request! Our little super spy Sybil has been asking for walkie talkies for well over a year, and 8 months after her birthday her wish has finally come true:

For months and months we researched and compared different walkie talkies, trying to find the right balance between quality, durability, price and most of all safety but (to Sybil’s great disappointment) there was absolutely nothing out there that ticked all the boxes. When we recently came across the new KidiGear Walkie Talkies (RRP $49.95, ages 5+) we immediately knew our search was over and we’ve most definitely found our match.

Whether your child is a secret spy, police officer, detective, adventure seeker or treasure hunter, these kid-safe walkie talkies are a must-have for any special mission. Designed by the toy-experts at VTech the KidiGear Walkie Talkies are designed with real kids in mind, they are simple to use and comfortable to hold with rounded corners for safe play. On the front they even have a large easy-to-read LCD display, after all modern kids need trendy gear.

Sybil mostly dreamed of chatting to her sisters from her bedroom or while on a bush walk or scavenger hunt in our neighbourhood, but to her big delight the KidiGear Walkie Talkies are much more than a two-way radio. Aside from communicating in walkie talkie mode, the two units can compete in four different 2-player games and send each other fun messages.

Kids can choose from a selection pre-loaded pictures/messages on the screen and respond with simple yes/no answers, even young children can do it. Because the messages are pre-loaded there is no risk of inappropriate content, just another way VTech keeps your children safe. These little secret texts are perfect for situations where audible radio-chats are not an option, no one will know you’re quietly communicating!

Safety has always been our main concern for any walkie talkie purchase. Most of the walkie talkies with a decent range and nice clear sound use UHF channels. This comes with a big risk of kids accidentally overhearing conversations of others using the same public channels (eg. truck drivers), people listening to your children’s chatter or even worse: strangers making contact with your precious children. KidiGear Walkie Talkies completely take away that fear by using a clear and secure digital connection, keeping your children and their adventures safe and sound within a huge 200m range.

KidiGear Walkie Talkies are available at Big W, JB Hi-Fi, good toy stores across Australia and selected online retailers.

I’m sure by now you’ve all spotted the Coles ‘I’m Perfect’ fresh produce range and the ‘Odd Bunch’ section at Woolworths, but here’s a delightfully different alternative you’ve (most likely) not heard of before:

Dutch social enterprise Kromkommer (Krom means crooked, Komkommer means cucumber) has joined forces with sustainable play specialist and multiple award-winner Plan Toys to bring funky formed fruit and vegetables to toy kitchens around the globe. Grab a quirky apple and bumpy pear, add a two-legged carrot and heart-shaped tomato, throw in a curvy cucumber and you’ve got the Wonky Fruit & Vegetable Playset.

The Wonky Fruit & Vegetables Playset (RRP $50.99, 18 months+) is a powerful platter in many ways: It encourages children to use their imagination and grow social skills during pretend play, it helps budding chefs to develop fine motor skills as they cut their food with the (toddler-safe) toy knife, it stimulates logical thinking as kids match the food halves to make pairs, it teaches children about different fruits and vegetables and the importance of healthy eating habits AND it shows them that fruit and vegetables come in many perfectly imperfect shapes that are all tasty and worthy!

Loved and cherished across the globe Plan Toys are made from replenishable rubberwood which is preservative free and naturally processed. No harmful additives or colourings are used during manufacturing and the carefully selected water-based paints are safety certified, making Plan Toys a fantastic sustainable choice for modern eco-conscious parents. After all we all know pretend meals sometimes involve real bites or cheeky chomps and your child’s safety is Plan Toys’ priority.

Australian families can find the Wonky Fruit & Vegetable Playset at Knock On Wood ToysThe Coffee Apple, Amazon and Twigs Toy Boutique. Enjoy your meal!

While first birthdays come with awesome benefits like parties, presents and birthday cake, they also trigger something rather unpleasant: immunisations… Poor Ted didn’t enjoy the four needles at all and left the doctors office with a bandaid on both his arms AND both his legs. Being the school holidays all the kids came along and they were very intrigued by it all, watching closely how the doctor checked Ted over and how the nurse prepared and administered each injection.

Hospital trips and doctor appointments can be quite scary, but pretend play is a fantastic way to help your child prepare and understand what’s happening in a fun, relaxed way. Our kids love getting out the doctor dress-up and their toy first aid kit to attend a medical emergency. Instead of focussing on the scary parts children can learn about all the good things a medical practitioner does and maybe even inspire them to become one too!

If you are a big Peppa Pig fan like our kids you will know that (while miss Rabbit is extremely good at multitasking) there are plenty of memorable characters who have special jobs and responsibilities. We regularly bump into a ‘Mr. Bull’ when we spot roadworks, we visit our own ‘Dr. Brown Bear’ for check-ups and take our pets to ‘Dr. Hamster’. The new Peppa Pig ‘When I Grow Up’ episodes enable children to connect with a range of characters, professions, roles and scenarios and recognise them in their own lives too. From helpful doctors to brave fire fighters, from office superstars to hardworking farmers and much more, Peppa Pig makes children familiar with every day jobs in a fun and playful way.

Research has shown it over and over again: Children’s play is so much more than just having fun! It’s their special way of preparing them for the big wide world through books, TV, craft and the so important pretend play. Parents and teachers can learn alongside too, as supporting and joining in children’s play helps them deeply connect and engage on the child’s own level.

I love listening to my little ones make up their own stories and adventures. From ‘mums and dads’ to keeping shop, from running a restaurant to catching robbers, from teaching a class to even managing their own library, it tells me a lot about their personalities and characters. I wonder what they will be when they grow up…

Thanks to our friends at EntertainmentOne one lucky Peppa Pig fan will win a Peppa Pig Mobile Medical Centre and Flip-Flap Peppa Board Book. For your chance to win enter our giveaway below:

Call the doctor! No matter where the emergency is, the Peppa Pig Mobile Medical Centre (RRP $39, ages 3+) is always on standby to bring help to those in need. While on the road Dr. Brown Bear, Nurse Peppa and Teddy travel in a funky white and yellow ambulance. Upon arrival the push-along van opens up to reveal a fully equiped medical centre complete with hospital bed, first aid kit and more. Even the roof transform into a waiting room with reception desk and chairs!

Parents often tell their children they can be anything they want to be, and the same goes for Peppa in this fun Flip-Flap Peppa Board Book (RRP $16.99). By lifting the flaps young readers can dress Peppa in 100 mix and match outfits to suit different professions, characters and occasions. A witch, a fairy, a doctor or an astronaut… What would you like to dress up like today? This sturdy board book offers endless entertainment for little hands.

As little as she is miss Hattie has proven to be a very interested big sister, who doesn’t miss a thing when it comes to her new baby brother. She is very keen to help out with changing and dressing him and watches closely when the nurses or doctors check out our little Ted. If you don’t keep an eye on her at all times she’ll even try herself to check his ears and rub some cream onto his face! To reward her caring attitude (and to give Ted a break from all that attention every now and then) we felt this clever VTech creation would make the perfect 2nd birthday gift:

Isn’t she adorable? Young boys and girls will instantly fall in love with Little Love Cuddle & Care (RRP $59.95, ages 2+), a darling girl doll who is in desperate need of some tender love and care. Time to get out your medicine bag and make her feel better…

Little Love encourages children to use their imagination, listen carefully and respond to her needs with the help of six included doctor tools. Miniature doctors can grab the stethoscope to listen to her heart, use the thermometer to check her temperature, inject the syringe, get out the medicine bottle and spoon or cover up an imaginary injury with a pretty bandaid.

Pretend play gets extra real thanks to the special sensors on her body which recognise and react to the different accessories, eg. when you touch Little Love’s heart with the stethoscope you can hear her heart beat, a quick check of the ear with the thermometer confirms if her temperature is normal, when her elbow hurts a bandaid does the trick and a spoonful of medicine takes care of a sore throat.

From sound and colour effects to short, easy-to-understand phrases (simple health lessons in disguise!), with Little Love there is loads to see, hear, learn and discover. By recording your child’s name Little Love will form a special bond with her ‘doctor’. You can even go to the VTech website to select your child’s birthday, favourite things to do and set meal- and bedtimes, then sync these to your doll to get personalised responses.

I love how VTech uses fun, engaging pretend play to teach children about different body parts and everyday health problems, and what a fantastic way to prepare kids for a doctor visit or hospital stay too! If your little one gets nervous when medical professionals perform basic body checks Little Love can be just the friendly companion your child needs to put his/her mind at ease.

VTech toys are available at major department stores, select online stores and independent toy retailers across Australia.

BRIO

Living oceans away from your family is hard, really hard. Some days are better than others but when you’ve just had a baby and the Christmas season is coming up it’s extra tough. Thankfully after 11 years of marriage Hip Daddy knows how much I struggle this time of year, so he gave us an early surprise by booking us an amazing 5-week holiday with my family next year. I know it is still months away but the kids and I are already getting in the mood with BRIO:

Backpacks and suitcases, swimmers and sunnies, toys and books for on the plane and of course loads of presents for all our loved ones, at our house the planning and preparing is always part of the fun. If you’re planning to take your little ones on a plane trip this Summer the cute BRIO Airplane Boarding Set (Ages 3+) would make a perfect Christmas gift.

This 5-piece play set is sure to get little travellers excited about an upcoming holiday, I just love the wooden details. It includes a fabulous looking aeroplane, the pilot, a holiday maker with a suitcase and even a rolling staircase to lead passengers on and off the plane, just like in real life. The roof of the plane opens up to reveal three spots to fit your two figurines and a piece of luggage.

I love that you can use this toy plane to go on a pretend flight in the air, as well as ride it on the ground using the sturdy wheels that roll nice and smooth. The people can be posed to stand up or sit down and you can even move their arms to actually hold the suitcase or grab the railing of the staircase. Designed for small hands the Airplane Boarding Set is easy to hold and play with and its compact size makes it an excellent toy for on-the-go, it will fit perfectly in a kids backpack or suitcase.

Going on a plane trip can be quite scary for young children, which is where a fun, playful toy like this can really make a difference. Kids can use their imagination and act out little stories about going on a holiday, flying on a plane and how to board and onboard, so that when it’s time for take-off they feel more prepared and calm about the trip ahead. For our 2-year old this will be the first time she’ll fully understand and experience a flight (a 24 hour journey in fact) so we’ll definitely be using BRIO in our holiday preparations.
