Now that the school holidays are (almost) over we have recommenced our weekly swimming lessons. It is quite an undertaking to get the four big kids ready and in the water on time but they absolutely love the water and water safety is very important to us so it is worth it. I can’t wait to start baby classes with Harriet in just two months time, so exciting!
In preparation for the new swimming season we treated miss Sybbie to some gorgeous new swim gear, I snapped up this awesome Plum outfit on sale a few months ago and immediately knew it was perfect for our bright and cheeky girl. Together with Opa and Oma we took the new bathers for a little test swim at the beach, the photos say it all.
Plum Swimwear is designed right here in Australia and available in sizes 00-7. From swimsuits to bikinis, from boardies to rashies and from swim nappies to hats, Plum has all the cool beach boys and little mermaids covered. There are lots of awesome designs to choose from and the range is surprisingly affordable too. If you are after a real bargain make sure you check out the swim sale section, there are discounts up to 40% to be had!
For Sybil I picked the vibrant red Polkadot Rashie and teamed it up with a matching Bikini, I am really chuffed with the look and fit. I have to admit her sisters were a little bit jealous, they immediately asked if it came in their size too. Of course you could easily wear just the bikini but we generally opt for long-sleeve rashies when swimming outdoors for some added sun protection, short-sleeve rash vests are available too.
Every Sunday afternoon we pack our four kids in the car and head to the pool for swimming lessons. I’ll be the first to admit that before we started swimming classes I was quite worried about the logistics, but now that we’ve got the hang of it we all look forward to our weekly splash in the pool. Over the past year we’ve seen lots of new faces (swimmers and teachers) and I can not count the number of times people have asked me about miss Sybbie’s swimsuit:
After a few tries with different swim nappies (some too loose, some too tight, some too bulky, some not protective enough) we finally found the sweetest (and safest!) swimmers at a lovely Australian online store called Aussie Babies 2 Kids. They specialise in swimwear, hats, goggles and accessories for children and are proud stockist of the Splash About range.
Sybbie has been using the Splash About Happy Nappy Costume every week for almost a year now without a single accident. The bottom half of the stylish Nappy Costume offers all the safety features of The Original Happy Nappy (no mess in the pool!) whilst the gorgeous print and frilly details gives it a real bathing suit look. Unlike many other swim nappies this design does not ‘swell up’ in the water so she can move around freely and comfortably.
We have found the Happy Nappy Costume extremely easy to put on and take off and it seals beautifully around the legs without being too tight or cutting into the legs. Being a full bathing suit it offers that bit of extra coverage compared to a swim nappy only and it doesn’t look too babyish at all. It is also a great choice for beach or outdoor pool as the Happy Nappy Costume has an excellent SPF 50+ rating. Priced at $29.95 it is very affordable and much cheaper than using disposable swim nappies.
The Happy Nappy Costume is available in a range of prints and sizes (Small to XXL) to suit children weighing 3-16+ kgs. To help you select the perfect size for your child you can refer to the handy size chart to see the waist and leg measurements, after all a good fit is important to ensure ultimate protection for your baby and those around you.
While there are many things I am planning to do the same with our new baby as with our other children, there are also things I would do differently this time. For quite a few years the logistics of taking multiple young children to the pool for swimming lessons really scared me and I kept putting it off but as of last year all kids have classes on a Sunday afternoon and it is so much fun. I can’t wait to, for the very first time, enjoy swimming with a small baby once he/she is ready.
At Konfidence they know all about enjoying the water with little people whilst staying safe and warm. Their extensive range of baby swimming, buoyancy and beachwear products will help you feel confident and comfortable splashing around with your new baby.
The cleverly designed Konfidence Babywarma (RRP $29.99, size 0-24 months) is a super-soft neoprene swimsuit that provides welcome warmth and 100% UV protection on covered bodyparts parts. It fully opens up so dressing your baby is a breeze and thanks to adjustable velcro fasteners a perfect snugly fit is ensured at all times. Even nappy changes are a piece of cake, just open the convenient flap at the bottom for speedy access. The Babywarma is currently available in Blue Polka, Strawberry, Clownfish, Nautical Blue and Red and Fuchsia.
Changing a wet, slippery baby near the water can be quite the battle, which is why the handy Konfidence Roll & Go BabyChanger (RRP $16.99, birth +) features a non-slip surface. No matter where you are, with the Roll & Go in your baby bag you’ll always a have a clean, safe and hygienic place for unexpected nappy changes. After use simply wipe clean, roll up and fasten ready for the next little clean-up.
If you are swimming regularly and enjoying an heated indoor pool you will love the Konfidence AquaNappy (RRP $15.99, size 3-30 months). Unlike bulky disposable swim nappies they are a compact fit, re-usable and gentle on the environment and your wallet. The new and improved design will grow with your baby from 3 all the way to 30 months, at which stage your child will most likely be toilet trained and able to wear regular bathers. Little accidents are contained thanks to elasticised waist and leg openings without them being too tight and uncomfortable.
Two months ago our children had their first swimming lesson, quite an undertaking when you have four children (6 years and under) but also a lot of fun. Every week they count down the days until it is time for swimming again and now that it’s school holidays we will have more time to splash around in the pool or go to the beach. Get water ready and sun safe in style this Summer with White Soda:
Australian swimwear label White Soda, created by talented designer Caroline, caters for active boys and girls aged 0-8 who love to be in and around the water. Whether you prefer a rash top and brief, a one piece, tankini, swim shorts, board shorts or even a swim nappy, White Soda has got everyone covered (literally!) and well protected from the harmful sun.
Personally I feel a rash top is a must when swimming in the ocean or outside pool so all four of our children wear a long-sleeve rashie. All White Soda rashies are made with UPF 50+ chlorine, stretch and fade resistant material so I know it is the safest choice for my children’s skin and (not unimportant) a durable one for my wallet too. There are both long and short sleeve rash tops available.
For indoor swimming our little miss 4 has been wearing this gorgeous Turquoise Stripe One Piece, it looks fantastic on and thanks to the adjustable straps it’s always exactly the right fit. How cute are the bright orange ruffles? I have found White Soda swimwear to be strong and stretchy which is very important, there is nothing as annoying as thin, see through, stretched bathers after just a few swims.
Of course every little swimmer is different so within the range you can mix and match to suit your needs and taste, allowing your child to put together his/her ideal White Soda swim outfit. The White Soda Girls collection alone consists of 39 items and the White Soda Boys collection offers 26 pieces, with so many options it is not easy to pick a favourite! Prices start at $21.95 and postage is just $8.50 Australia wide.

When the thermometer reads 37ºC in mid October you know it’s time to dig up the bathers and shake out the towels, swimming season has begun! Unlike myself, who would love to just lay on the beach and read a good book, the kids are always busy: swimming, building sand castles, playing catch, kicking balls, flying kites, searching for shells and more. So how do you keep kids dry and toasty while they play?
