Sybbie’s Party Picks

It feels like yesterday when I was cuddling my tiny baby girl, now she is about to turn four… Miss Sybbie is counting the sleeps until her birthday next week and I can’t wait to spoil our little princess on her special day. As many of you will know food has alway been a struggle for Sybil and while we have come a long way she is still a picky eater. Time to put together a party menu with some of her favourite treats:

In the early years one of the very few things Sybil would eat was cucumber and it is still one of her faves. She also loves cheese (how can you not when you are half Dutch?) so I think these gorgeous Edible Tulips made with cucumber, cheese and sausage will be a real winner, they will even fit in with the kindy’s ‘healthy eating’ policy! Bonus: The tulips are a cute wink to her Dutch heritage too.

Another Dutch snack Sybbie can never get enough of is Dutch meatballs, of course with a little Dutch flag proudly stuck in each of them. Thankfully we always bring a big supply of the magic Dutch ‘meatball spices’ back with us from our holidays so we can recreate this famous party nibble at home. It never fails to impress Aussie guests, you simply can’t buy a meatball like that here!

A birthday isn’t complete without a sweet delight and I can’t wait to whip up a delicious batch of Carrot Cake Cupcakes with cream cheese icing. Normally I bake one big carrot cake but this time the birthday girl has asked for cupcakes, hopefully they work out! Miss Sybbie has handpicked the prettiest purple striped baking cups and a big number 4 to go on the top of the cupcake tower.

If you are short on time and inspiration, have a lack of helping hands or are simply not that talented in the kitchen you’ll be pleased to know that there is help available. There are plenty of amazing people out there who love cooking up a storm and who can’t wait to take your next party from average to amazing with the most scrumptious canapés and finger food. Have a chat to some of your local caterers to see what your options are.

A good catering company listens to your wishes and needs and works with your budget, so that come party time you can savour the delights and enjoy the smiles of your guests without the stress (and the kitchen mess). Take for example Flavours, finger food catering Sydney: from sweet to savoury, from cold to warm and everything in between, they deliver the most impressive party treats perfectly suited to your private or corporate event.

What are your family’s favourite party foods? Let me know, I am always looking for new ideas to wow my guests with.

School fundraisers, class parties, birthdays, celebrations, festive lunches and BBQs… it has sure been a busy December month of whipping up tasty treats here at Hip Little One HQ. With a big family like ours there is always plenty of baking to be done, so when I spotted all these gorgeous Paper Eskimo party goods on sale at Little Styles I just had to stock up:

I first discovered the stylish Paper Eskimo Baking Cups (RRP $6.95, now $2.95-$3.95) a few years ago and have been a big fan ever since. They hold their shape beautifully (unlike the cheap thin patty pans) and look super festive and fancy, especially when you have a whole cupcake stand fun! It’s that time of the year again and calendars are quickly filling up with long overdue catch-ups, large family feasts and relaxing New Year’s Eve parties with friends. If you are looking for a way to de-stress in December and add plenty of giggles to your Christmas gatherings you’ll love this awesome find from Funtastic:

Hailed on social media as the perfect party game for the silly season Mouthguard Challenge (RRP $10) is flying off the shelves, if you want to get in on the fun you better be quick!

Mouthguard Challenge proves that the simple things in life are often the most enjoyable. The game requires no talent, little effort and everyone can play as long as you don’t mind making a fool of yourself! Pop in your mouthguard and draw a task card to accept your challenge: From singing a song to saying a sentence and from describing a word to completing a taste test, everyone will be roaring with laughter in no-time.

With 51 different task cards there is plenty of mouthguard fun to be had and you can always create your own dares too, the options are endless. At the end of the game the player with the most points will be crowned the Mouthguard Expert, will it be you?

There are loads of hilarious videos online of people who took on a mouthguard challenge of their own, this being one of my absolute favourites:

The game comes with four reusable mouthguards, simply wash after use so they are clean and ready for your next round. Pleasantly priced at just ten bucks Mouthguard Challenge is kind on the tight Christmas budget and an ideal stocking filler or Kris Kringle gift.

You can find Mouthguard Challenge at your local Kmart store or online at

I know it’s only October but when it comes to festive fashion you can’t start your shopping early enough. For ‘real’ Aussie girls there may be plenty of choice in pretty frocks but for the Australian Girl doll it’s first come first served and if the precious years are anything to go by the annual Christmas dress is guaranteed to sell out in a flash:

Australian Girl Mary-JanesWe all know you can’t get more Christmassy than red and green which is why this year’s Christmas dress features a double layer tulle underskirt in a refreshing lime green colour. The red and white polka dot dress is beautifully made with a lined bodice and finished off with a lime green ribbon and bow to match the underskirt. Just add some cute sandals, flats or Mary Janes and your Australian Girl is ready for the festive season!

Australian Girl Dress Christmas

As always the attention to detail is next to none and great care has been taken to ensure a perfect fit and easy dressing and undressing for little hands. Unlike traditional velcro which often pulls and tugs on clothing and hair the 2015 Christmas Dress (like all other Australian Girl doll clothing) is designed with convenient press stud closures at the back that are gentle on the fabric and your doll’s hair, after all no one likes brushing out the tangles.
