Cirque du Soleil ‘Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities’

A few years ago I was offered the incredible opportunity to see Cirque du Soleil perform in Antwerp, Belgium, however with no babysitter available I sadly had to pass last minute and it still makes me sad thinking about it. I have always wanted to experience Cirque du Soleil and I have been patiently waiting for another chance… with Adelaide on the tour list for 2020 I am secretly hoping it will be my year!

Written and directed by Michel Laprise, Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities is a tale in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible. In this realm set in the latter half of the nineteenth century, reality is quite relative indeed as our perception of it is utterly transformed.

In an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a scientist (the Seeker) is convinced that there exists a hidden world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await. Out of his curio cabinet steps an international cast of 47 artists from 17 countries, a collection of otherworldly characters made up of world-class gymnasts, acrobats, contortionists, hand-puppeteers, yo-yo wizards, clowns, actors and musicians. Together they turn the Seeker’s steampunk world upside-down as they are guided by an energetic gypsy jazz, electro swing soundtrack.

Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities’ will be opening its doors to the public in the following locations across Australia (with Melbourne now being treated to additional performances, how lucky!):

Sydney – October 2 to November 24, 2019
Brisbane – January 10 to February 23, 2020
Melbourne – March 12 to April 26, 2020
Adelaide – May 29 to June 7, 2020
Perth – July 15 to August 2

Now that my growing baby hump has revealed our big news I can finally start sharing some of my favourite finds for our much loved bundle of joy. I secretly started my shopping a few months ago with a new ride to seat our two littlest ones and last week I added a gorgeous gr8x nappy bag to match, I am super pleased with this stylish travel combo:

If you are a regular Hip Little One reader you no doubt know that I have a soft spot for all shades of blue and I often dress both my girls and my only boy in blue. So regardless of what our new addition will turn out to be (we love our surprises!) I was immediately drawn to the neutral blue colour of the recently released Zoe, doesn’t it look awesome?

Zoe (RRP $99.95, Snowflake Blue) is the latest addition to the gr8x nappy bag range and it is quickly winning hearts across the country. I am not surprised these bags are flying off the shelves, as the spacious but lightweight satchel style bag is packed with clever features that will make life easier for busy parents on the go. After five babies I consider myself a bit of a nappy bag expert and I know exactly what I want and don’t want, so no more miss-buys for me.

Measuring a generous 39cm x 26cm x 17cm in size the Zoe offers plenty of storage space for all your baby’s gear and even some of your own bits and pieces too. Inside you’ll find neat internal pockets to keep everything tidy and organised, on the outside are two smaller front zip pockets (ideal for your car keys or your favourite lip gloss) and a handy end pocket on each side to keep your baby’s and your own drink bottle within hand’s reach.

Personally I just love the clever zip-around top, allowing the bag to open up nice and wide so you can instantly find what you are looking for. Especially when you have a nappy emergency you’ll be glad not to have to dig around in the dark for ages to find a packet of wipes or a clean nappy!

There is plenty more to love about Zoe like an adjustable shoulder strap with comfortable padding, super practical easy-clean canvas fabric and protective metal feet on the base to ensure the bottom of your bag doesn’t get dirty or damaged when placed on the ground. As an extra bonus your new Zoe bag comes with a complimentary soft, padded, change mat and a zipped insulated bottle traveller in matching blue fabric.

Blue may be my absolute favourite colour, but if is not really your shade you’ll be pleased to know that the Zoe bag is also available in neutral and classy Snowflake Grey to perfectly match your monochrome look.

Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music2

With colds and coughs keeping us indoors this week it was the perfect opportunity to introduce the kids to some of my favourite childhood movies: Mary Poppins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and of course the Sound of Music. As little as they are it didn’t take them long to get excited about the music and even though the words are pretty tricky when you are four the catchy tunes had them humming along in no time. If you are a Sound of Music fan too and you live in Melbourne this is the perfect evening (or afternoon) out for you:

Sound of Music Sing-A-Long-AWhether you take a friend, your mum, partner or kids, the Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music is sure to be an unforgettable experience. Join a hall full of other Sound of Music enthusiasts dressed their part, warm up your vocal cords and get ready to enjoy the Sound of Music in a whole new way. This is so much more than just a movie, it’s a cheerful combination of karaoke, a costume parade, a game show and much more all based on the wonderful story of Maria and the Von Trapp family.

Sing-A-Long-A Sound of MusicEdelweiss, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Every Mountain, So Long Farewell and of course My Favourite Things, I think you’ll soon discover you know more words than you think and you may not even need those song subtitles at all. Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music is a celebration from the first note until the last and with only three performances scheduled (Aug 16/Aug 17) you better get your seats booked before you miss out.

You may have read that two weeks ago we went out for dinner with our kids, quite an adventure with three little people. At home the baby is known to make quite a mess at dinnertime and I was not looking forward to the mess she’d leave at the restaurant. I prepared myself with plenty of wipes and a Bibska Duo Bib from Babies Favourite Things.

Babies Favourite Things is an Australian online store filled with loads of fabulous products for babies and mums, handpicked by the lovely Kristy. When browsing the store you will soon notice that Babies Favourite Things has got it all covered: from wearing to playing, eating to sleeping, going out to decorating, you will love Kristy’s top picks. Big bonus: many of the items in store are designed and made right here in Australia, so you are supporting Australian businesses too!

Bibska bibs are a perfect of example of these great Australian treasures. The Bibska range offers a gorgeous selection of styles and prints that will pass the test of all style conscious mums. At the restaurant the fold on the Bibska Duo Bib stopped a large amount of food from falling on the floor, how handy! The original Bibska Bib does not only catch food and teething dribble, it is a fashion accessory too. Prices start at just $12.95.

Baby food pouches are an easy, compact and quick way of feeding baby on the go but store bought baby food is not as healthy as home made food. With the On the Go Baby Food Pouches ($17.95, 20 pack) you get the best of both worlds, fill them with home made meals and eat fresh or freeze and heat when needed. With the reusable, BPA free Colour Change Pouch Spoons ($5.95 per 2) you can feed baby directly from the pouch (plus they fit on other baby food pouches too).

On the topic of going out and about with baby you might need something more than food to keep your little one happy. The Peek-a-Boo Bags are sure to deliver plenty of entertainment. Each bag contains lots of little items and the goal is to ‘find’ all the items on the list by feeling from the outside. No mess, no pieces getting lost, just great fun and very educational too! I will definitely remember this one for our next plane trip.

Now that the twins are out of nappies I can run out the door with next to nothing, what a welcome change after 3 years of dragging a complete nursery along. Some wipes, a dummy, a nappy for baby and a nappy sack are all I need so instead of a bulky nappy bag I can now get away with a compact Nappy Wallet from Charlie Bloome.

Charlie Bloome’s new Nappy Wallets have been designed by mums for mums (and dads) so you know that they are fitted with lots of clever features. From the outside the Nappy Wallet looks exactly like, well, a wallet but just a bit bigger. The neutral brown colour is suitable for both mums and dads and the clip lets you attach the wallet to your pram or bike so you can really keep your hands free. The outside zip pocket offers a handy storage space for your phone and car keys.

On the inside you’ll find a generous sized fold out change mat that can be wiped clean, as well as a zip pocket and a mesh pocket to store nappies, wipes and other little necessities you might need when out. It is hard to believe but all this comes with the small measurements of just 30 x 20cm (closed) and the teeny price tag of $18, you won’t find a better price elsewhere!

Anyone who knows me will know that I always tend to bring much more than needed but even with a few add-ons the Charlie Bloome Nappy Wallet still has room and the strap on the outside keeps everything nice and snug together without the risk of popping open (unlike other wallets that close with velcro). A perfect design for busy parents on the go, it can hold all you need and hardly takes up any room.

By now many mums are quickly running out of ideas on what to do with the kids these school holidays. They have been to the pool or beach, visited a park and spent a few hours at an indoor play centre but there are still a few weeks left and the kids are getting bored. If this is you and you are in South Australia I suggest you check out Kids Around Town.

Kids Around Town is the name of a fabulous family coupon book created by and for parents. Each year they put together a fantastic selection of offers for family friendly places in South Australia, because we all love savings and going out with/buying for kids is expensive! Some of the companies you might know already and others may be new to you, either way there will be plenty to discover. The offers are divided over 8 categories (eg. Healthy & Happy, Eats & Treats, Watch, Learn & Play and more) so there is something for kids of all ages and for different occasions.

The Kids Around Town 2012 edition contains more than 200 offers and can save you over $5000, since the book itself costs just $20 you really can’t go wrong and you’ll earn back your investment in no time. The year has only just started and you have until December 2012 to visit all these fabulous South Australian businesses and redeem your vouchers. You can view all the companies involved online as well as take a look at the complete contents of the book.

Just last week we took the children to Gorge Wildlife Park, where they had a ball checking out monkeys, birds and even camels as well as feeding the kangaroos. With a Kids Around Town discount voucher such family outings are much more within reach. The book also holds some great discount offers for baby and toy stores, perfect for gifts and parents preparing for a new baby.
