For as long as I can remember I have loved coconut. As a child I would be over the moon if my mum bought a coconut, savouring every piece I could get out of the shell. As a teenager I was addicted to the tropical scent of coconut shampoos and body creams and of course I would eat more than my share of yummy Bounty bars. Aside from the delicious smell and the scrumptious flavour coconut is full of fabulous health benefits, so I knew I was in for a treat when I discovered Cocobare Baby:

Made right here in Australia by the skincare experts at Beauty Ninja this lovely coconut based baby skincare range is the bee’s knees, one little sniff and you’re hooked! Cocobare Baby skincare uses naturally derived and organic ingredients to keep your baby’s delicate skin in tip top shape (and secretly this mama adores it too).

Unlike many other skincare brands, that use water and synthetic ingredients to treat only the top layer of the skin, Cocobare Baby uses soothing coconut oil which penetrates deeper, making it an excellent moisturiser and nourisher. Not only does it pamper the skin thoroughly, it also kills harmful micro-organisms so it is a gentle but strong protector too. Combine that with natural superheroes like chamomile, aloe vera, calendula oil and Shea butter and you’re in for a treat.

Whether you are fighting a battle with stubborn nappy rash, flaky cradle cap or itchy eczema or just want to keep your baby’s skin soft and supple Cocobare Baby has you covered from top to toe with a Baby Wash, Shampoo, 2-in-1 Shampoo and Baby Wash, Lotion, Bottom Balm and Massage Oil. The entire Cocobare Baby range is completely free from nasty minerals, paraben and palm oil, ensuring parents they are making the right choice for their precious little bundle and the environment at the same time. Cocobare is not tested on animals so our little fluffy bundles give it the thumbs up too!

When I think back to my life ten years ago I can’t believe how much has changed. Not only did I get married and moved to Australia from the other side of the world, we also welcomed four (soon five) beautiful children into our family. I absolutely love our busy household and while our big family means I may not be able to splurge on luxury items for myself anymore I wouldn’t swap it for the world.

Goodness range

I love discovering budget-friendly alternatives for luxury products and today’s find is a real winner. If you are looking for gentle skincare that is good for your skin, the environment AND your (tight!) wallet you are sure to adore the new Goodness range.

Goodness Natural Beauty LabThe team at Goodness Natural Beauty Lab uses natural skin enhancers like avocado, coconut and chia oil, as well as other eco-treasures like honeysuckle extract, shea butter, blackberry extract and many more, and bottles it up for us to enjoy. The affordable range currently consists of 5 great products that cover all your skincare needs from the moment you wake up with the light and breathable Every Morning Moisturiser (RRP $16.95, 75ml) to cleaning up before bed with the fresh and tingly Every Day Cream Cleanser (RRP $16.95, 150ml).

Every Evening CreamMy personal favourite is a wonderfully fragrant little jar called Every Evening Cream (RRP $19.95, 60ml), the consistency is perfect, it leaves my skin feeling soft when I wake up and the smell is to die for. I often find night creams too thick and suffocating so this a welcome change, I’ve even convinced hubby to add this slice of Goodness to his after-shower routine and that says a lot.

Goodness Chia Seed OilCertified Organic Chia Seed Oil (RRP $19.99, 20ml), also known as Goodness’ hero product, gives tired skin a welcome boost of healthy omega fatty acids without the expensive ‘certified organic’ price tag. Just a few drops of this easily absorbed silky oil deliver instant hydration and nourishment and the compact handbag size make it perfect for little refreshments throughout the day.

Goodness Face ScrubI generally avoid facial scrubs because I find them too harsh but like the rest of the Goodness range this wonderful Every Week Face Scrub (RRP $12.95, 50ml) is free from nasties like parabens, petrochemicals, PEGs, sulfates, silicons, harsh surfactants and other yucky ingredients so it is surprisingly gentle. Even my sensitive pregnancy skin, which seems to respond rather drastically to small changes at the moment, has given this new product the thumbs up!

You can find the Goodness range right now at all Chemist Warehouse, My Chemist and selected Woolworths stores across Australia and soon Priceline will be joining the Goodness revolution too.

Getting healthy in 2015 with Tefal ActiFry 2-in-1

Bing Lee

As you may have read last week one of my New Year resolutions is to live and eat healthier, not just in 2015 but permanently. We’re only 3 weeks into the new year so if you haven’t already now is the perfect time to ditch unhealthy habits and make the necessary changes in your, and your family’s, diet. Don’t worry, you can still enjoy your favourite snacks! Ditching the bad foods is much easier than it sounds, it’s all about ‘swapping’:

Tefal Actifry 2-in-1I absolutely LOVE hot chips and would be extremely sad if I could not enjoy them any more so instead of crossing them off the menu completely I have swapped unhealthy deep-fried chips for a delicious healthy and guilt-free alternative that will change the way you think about chips forever. About 3 months ago Bing Lee kindly sent me the Tefal Actifry 2-in-1 and we’ve been cooking up a storm ever since.

The Tefal Actifry 2-in-1 (RRP $369) is a revolutionary kitchen appliance that cooks two tasty and nutritious dishes at once with nothing but a spoonful of oil (a world of difference from a greasy oil-filled deep fryer!). The clever two-layer design allows you to cook a complete meal in one handy unit: the bottom layer, a deep and spacious 1.5kg bowl, is perfect for chips, vegetables, stir-fries and risottos while the top cooking zone, a convenient 0.5kg tray, will cook your meat, poultry or fish to perfection.

Tefal Actifry Homemade Chips

Perfect homemade chips, you can wake me up for these any day!

You can cook a range of different meals in the Actifry in both fresh and frozen state (depending on the food), the large stirring paddle keeps the food moving so everything is evenly cooked. Personally I prefer to peel and cut our own chips but if you’re short on time you can easily grab a bag of frozen fries from the freezer and toss it in. If you love a good risotto but dislike the amount of stirring required the Actifry is a great way to save yourself a sore arm. The stirring paddle does all the stirring for you (only when using the lower cooking zone on its own, when using the tray too stirring is disabled), it doesn’t get much easier than this.

Tefal Actifry Risotto

A delicious family favourite: Chicken and Spinach Risotto with Bacon

To see how your meal is progressing you can peek through the transparent lid, which also keeps warmth (and any spatters that could possible escape when cooking) contained within the unit. With just four buttons the Actifry is easy to control and the handy LED display shows exactly how much time is left before your dinner is ready. To remove the tray and bowl from the Actifry you simply click on the handle so you can lift them out and serve your cooked meal.

Tefal Actifry Chicken in Tray

Seasoned chicken breast in top tray

As we are a ‘big’ family of six we generally make use of the full capacity which means most meals have a cooking time of around 40-45 minutes. This is a perfect amount of time to hang up a load of washing, tidy and vacuum the living room or finish off some homework so when the chores are done dinner is waiting for us. When we walk back in the door after swimming at 4.30pm we pop on the Actifry 2-in-1, shower all the kids and sit down for a yummy meal, it’s ideal for busy families who value their time and care about healthy food.

Tefal Actifry Chicken Wings

Marinated chicken wings, one of the kids’ top picks

On Christmas Day we took the Actifry to the inlaws and cooked a batch of chips for all the kids while we prepared Christmas lunch, the Actifry did all the work and the feedback was fantastic. All guests wanted to try the chips and could not believe how delicious and crispy they turned out! I almost had to fight to take our Actifry back home, they loved it so much they wanted to keep it.

Perfect risotto without stirring

Perfect risotto without stirring

Both cooking layers of the Tefal Actifry (as well as the stirring paddle) can be removed for easy cleaning, the non-stick coating makes them a breeze to clean and it takes just a few minutes to wipe down the interior and included measuring spoon. Unlike with yucky deep-fryers there are no spatters of oil everywhere, it’s literally clean eating. All in all once dinner is finished the Tefal Actifry is generally back on the shelf in less than 5 minutes so it’s quick and easy.

Actifry Recipe BookTo help you get started with your new kitchen buddy you can download the special Tefal Actifry App (Free) on your smartphone or tablet. Not only does the app contain yummy recipe ideas, it is also a handy reference if you are not sure how long to set your Actifry for or how much oil to use for what quantity of food. A handy manual and recipe book is included to help you master your Actifry cooking in a flash.

Since we acquired the Tefal Actifry we have not had take-away chicken and chips once, simply because the chips ‘from home’ taste a million times better and healthier. Of course it is much cheaper too, with a bit of luck I can pick up a huge 5kg bag of potatoes for just $1-$2 at our local greengrocer, that’s a lot of chips for next to nothing! Larger potatoes take less peeling but small potatoes make delicious chips too.

Actifry Jamie OliverThere are several different Tefal Actifry models and sizes available with prices starting at $249 up to $369. From singles and couples to big families like ours, there is a perfect size to suit everyone. For a limited time only Bing Lee has are some fabulous Tefal Actifry packages available that come with a FREE 26cm Jamie Oliver Frypan, nice bonus! As if that isn’t enough here’s another great incentive to win you over:

Until February 28, 2015, Hip Little One readers can save 5% on all small kitchen appliances at Bing Lee. To profit from this exclusive offer simply enter the code ‘BLOG5OFF’ at checkout, it’s an excellent opportunity to pick up a new Tefal Actifry at a great price.

The final verdict: Obviously the Tefal Actifry costs considerably more than your average deep fryer which could scare some people off, so it is important to remember that it is much healthier (after all, it is NOT a deep fryer!) and you can also cook many more different dishes in it than in a standard deep fryer. It is easy to use, quiet when cooking and it won’t leave your kitchen bench greasy and your whole house smelly for days. I will admit that before we started using the Actifry I would have felt the expense was too big, however after using it many times over the course of a few months I see how the Actifry is a great investment that helps families cook healthy meals and is almost like a very welcome extra set of hands, we can now not imagine our busy kitchen without it.

Tefal Actifry 2-in-1

Side note: During the cooking process we experienced some condensation under the LED screen which disappears once the unit has cooled down. After thorough investigation I have been ensured by Tefal Australia that the shadowing is considered normal and will not impact on the performance for the product, therefore it is no reason for concern.

FGB Bosisto's

With four children in the house it is always busy. They’re a gorgeous bunch but they make lots of mess and dirty laundry, it is almost impossible to keep up with it and if one or more of them are sick it is even harder. Especially now that the twins are attending kindy they often come home with coughs and colds, I can’t avoid that but at least I know I can jump right in and fight back with Bosisto’s, also known as ‘The Parrot’.

I discovered Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil a few years ago and over time I have found more and more uses for this great 100% natural Australian product. Most people will know Eucalyptus Oil mainly for its healing and relieving properties during cold and flu season, something every Australian family struggles with when it comes to winter time. Whether you use a steam inhaler, vapouriser, nasal inhaler or throat lozenge, you can count on Bosisto’s to bring much needed relief.

The Bosisto’s range is full of great products but we have a few hot favourites that we can’t go without. When my kids struggle to sleep due to a blocked nose we always turn on our vapouriser with a dash of the Bosisto’s EucoSteam Inhalant. We really swear by it, that’s why we have 3 vapourisers: one for every kids’ bedroom! It helps clear their nose so they can sleep better and they wake up more rested, much less miserable and able to battle the cold.

But there is more, much more, to Eucalyptus Oil than meets the eye. We always have a can of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray in the laundry cupboard to help me get rid of stubborn stains on our laundry, in particular the green knees the kids come home with. It leaves the laundry smelling naturally clean and I don’t have to worry about my children’s sensitive skin plus at just $8.50 a can it’s very affordable and lasts ages.

I use the same spray to freshen up the toilet and clean door handles, not only because it smells lovely but also because it kills 99.9% of germs. Then there is the cat basket and litter tray, places that can get a little smelly and harbour germs you’d rather not have in your house and again Bosisto’s saves the day. For sticky residue and mysterious marks that just won’t budge I put a few drops of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil on a cloth and it always works a treat.

Bosistos RubLast but not least a little tip from hip hubby: Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Rub. If you’re really under the weather and you’re sore all over this warm, soothing rub offers temporary relief for sore muscles so you can handle the day a little better. He keeps a jar on his bedside table and uses it not only when sick and sore but also after doing heavy work around the house and in the garden. It rubs in easily and doesn’t leave you with marks on clothes or greasy hands.
