When I walked (or should I say waddled?) into the delivery room at almost 41 weeks pregnant I loudly informed Hip Daddy that, compared to my five previous pre-term babies, this one was surely going to kill me. At the time the midwives reassured me that the baby would be average in size, but when our boy weighed in at a whopping 4.6kg (10lbs 3oz) I couldn’t help but think ‘I told you so!’. Now that Ted is 2 weeks old I am feeling a bit more like my old self and our big chubby bundle of joy is an absolute delight who feeds and sleeps like a champ, most of the time…

All six of our babies have been swaddled from birth (some even up to 10 months+) and I found it extremely helpful in establishing a good bedtime routine. As soon as those wriggly little arms and kicking legs are snuggly wrapped our little boy calms down and drifts off to sleep, here he is on cloud 9 with ergoPouch.

With its super clever 2-in-1 design the ergoPouch Cocoon Swaddle + Sleep Bag (RRP $34.95- $44.95, ages 0-12 months) is the ultimate womb-to-world sleep solution for young families. You can start using the Cocoon immediately from birth (Minimum baby weight 3kg) as a swaddle, keeping arms safely tucked inside whilst the bell-shaped bottom leaves plenty of room for hips and legs to move freely.

If you’re put off by all the folds, twists and tucks of traditional swaddling with a large piece of fabric you will absolutely love the ease of the Cocoon, just zip up and you’re done. Strong little Houdinis won’t be able to escape from their Cocoons, allowing both baby and parents to get a proper sleep without endless re-wrapping. Midnight nappy checks are a breeze too, as you can use the two-way zip to quickly check the bottom half without having to take off the whole Cocoon.

As your baby gets bigger and moves on from being swaddled you can use the same Cocoon as a sleep bag by opening up the arms with the handy armhole poppers. You can even choose for a slow transition and free up one arm at a time, how easy is that? There is no need to buy different products and you can change back and forth as needed, making the Cocoon a budget-friendly investment for new parents.

To ensure a comfortable temperature at any climate you can choose from a 0.2 TOG or 1.0 TOG rating. Made from breathable organic cotton (0.2 TOG) or a soft organic cotton/bamboo blend (1.0 TOG), with a touch of elastane for extra stretch, the Cocoon Swaddle + Sleep Bag is ideal for sensitive newborn skin. The ergoPouch Cocoon is currently available in six stylish prints to suit boys and girls.

Bye bye nursery, hello toddler room

With the arrival of baby no.6 around the corner we are currently in a mad rush to finish our bedroom puzzle, something we always seem to leave until the very last minute! While we agreed that Harriet would have to vacate the nursery for the new arrival, at not even 2 years old (and still very much our ‘baby’) we also felt she wasn’t quite ready to move into a shared room with one of her older sisters. Our solution: A lovely toddler room fit for our little treasure…

As soon as I saw this dreamy StarBright Toddler Bed (Ages 18 months – 5 years) I knew it would fit our needs perfectly, it ticks every single one of our boxes! Designed for small legs the bed sits close to the ground, this makes getting in and out a breeze and will help your growing toddler feel safe, confident and grown-up. Harriet loves climbing in by herself and testing out her new bed (complete with fake snoring sounds), nap time or not!

Because safety is important to us I really appreciate the protective side panels that will keep little sleepyheads from accidentally tumbling out of bed as they sleep. Manufactured by Worlds Apart this easy-to-assemble bed is made with sturdy, high quality MDF and features a slat base, ensuring a durable and solid construction that is tested to the most stringent safety standards. The cute attached bedside table is even strong enough to double as a parent seat for that last bedtime story, how convenient is that?

Another delightful child-friendly feature of this sweet bed is the built-in night light that helps busy bees drift off to sleep peacefully and will turn off after 15 minutes. The moon-shaped light spreads a calming glow over the bed and projects a starry night sky onto the wall at the same time, it’s like sleeping in space! Unlike with separate night lights there are no dangerous loose cords or cables and it can not fall on the ground when little hands reach for it in the middle of the night.

The gender neutral colour scheme makes the StarBright bed a great choice for boys and girls, it easily fits in with any decor and you can simply dress it up with your favourite linen and wall decor to suit your taste. As I have a soft spot for cool, calming blue I made the bed with a crisp Starlight Blue Striped Fitted Sheet and the matching Pinwheel Quilted Comforter by CoCaLo. Although this bed looks and feels like a ‘big’ bed, thanks to the 140x70cm mattress size you can continue to use your normal cot bed linen which is great news for the family budget.

We have purposely kept Hattie’s room simple but fun with the addition of two pieces from the Worlds Apart BearHug range. To help keep the room organised and to encourage Hattie to tidy up after play we decided on the BearHug Stack Storage, a clever and compact storage unit that holds all her toys and teddies. When in use the three cubes can be separated so she can access all her treasures, and when packed away the unit’s small footprint leaves the room spacious and clean.

Inspired by her older siblings Hattie loves to get crafty which can cause a bit of trouble when she gets her hands on special markers, glitter paint, important paperwork and glue or when she climbs upon our high dining chairs to sit at the big table. This child-proof BearHug Desk solves all our trouble, she can sit at a perfect toddler height, the seat doesn’t wobble or fall over and she has access to her own crayons and paper. I just love this little art desk, I can already tell it will be one of her favourite spots in the house.

To add a pop of colour and brighten the plain walls Hattie and I added a generous sprinkle of the Multi Glitter Confetti Dots, it is like the colours were made to match the BearHug range. I loved how well the removable RoomMates wall decals came up in our girls’ room a few months ago and how easy they were to apply, so it was an obvious choice for Harriet’s toddler room. With 180 stickers per pack there was plenty of glitter to go around, our older girls instantly claimed the left-over dots for their room.

Harriet’s new room has turned into a pretty, playful and peaceful place which we think she will love and hopefully having her own special sanctuary will help make the transition easy and fun during this tricky time of becoming an older sister.

VTech

It may have been a race against the clock but after many long, late nights Hip Daddy has finally completed the baby’s nursery, just in time! I have to admit I was starting to feel a little stressed, there’s nothing more pleasing to an expecting mama’s eye than a beautifully made cot or bassinet waiting for its new owner…

Time will tell whether our new bundle will be a good sleeper but VTech is ready to help him/her drift off peacefully with this cuddly bedtime buddy:

The Starlight Sounds Hippo (RRP $49.95, ages 0 months+) combines the soft hug of a plush toy with the reassuring comforts of sound and light, it’s a winner all around.

Starlight Sounds HippoIt is no secret that babies are intrigued by movement and a simple light can keep babies entertained for ages. With four different coloured lights and six different light displays the Starlight Sounds Hippo definitely has plenty in store to keep little minds busy as they nod off for a nap. Imagine your baby’s delight while watching a wonderful light show being projected on the nursery ceiling!

Does your little one need some more gentle encouragement to fall asleep? This happy hippo is up to the task with an extensive 100+ range of soothing lullabies, calming nature sounds and well-known nursery rhymes that can be played on a 10, 20 or 30 minute timer. The volume is adjustable so you don’t have to worry about the sound being too loud or invasive to sleep with.

The absolute best part of the Starlight Sounds Hippo is that he is voice activated, he jumps into action when your baby cries which could help settle your baby back into sleep before he/he is fully awake. I will have to get back to you in a few months time to report on our sleeping success, keep an eye out!

VTech toys are available at major department stores, select online stores and independent toy retailers across Australia.

BBox Colour Pallet Concepts 8-14 (RGB)

Welcome Baby Giveaway – Day 22

Over the course of 8 years and five kids I have bought more than my fair share of baby goods, some were fantastic buys and others (in hindsight) a total waste of money. One thing I would buy all over again in a heartbeat is this fantastic b.box gem, for the past few years we’ve used ours daily and I still love it as much as I did on day one. If you want to see for yourself what I’m raving about make sure to join today’s Christmas Countdown giveaway:

b.box range

Designed right here in Australia by two clever mamas the award-winning b.box product range is fun, functional and fashionable, all rolled into one. Their innovative designs are all about making your life that little bit easier while adding a touch of style.

On one side the fabulous b.box Diaper Caddy (RRP $69.95) holds a huge stack of nappies and the other side is designed to neatly fit a big tub of baby wipes. Underneath a spacious slide-out drawer keeps your favourite nappy creams and lotions together so you have all your nappy change essentials within reach, every single time. The caddy even comes with a matching, fold-up, wipe-clean change mat, so handy!

While we do have a lovely change table in our baby’s nursery the reality is that I generally can’t be bothered to walk all the way to other end of the house (and leave the other kids by themselves). Our b.box Diaper Caddy has been living in our lounge room for several years where it has been my trusty change companion. The sturdy design is durable, strong and easy to keep clean, if it survives life in our big, busy family you can rest assured the quality is fantastic.

Long after your baby has grown out of nappies you can still enjoy your caddy as storage for eg. craft or sewing supplies, toiletries, hair accessories or toys. Cuddle up with CoCaLo

cocalo

Before Harriet was born I carefully handpicked her a gorgeous soft baby blankie, hoping that it would be love at first sight and the two would become inseparable. Of course Hattie turned out as headstrong as her mother and she refused to have anything to do with it. Fast forward 13 months and she has finally found one she adores, she carries it around throughout the house and she is not in the slightest bothered by the fact that it’s more a blanket than a blankie. I have to admit, this wonderful CoCaLo comforter is quite the prize:

cocalo-pinwheel-comforter

Measuring a very generous 91 x 114 cm in size her beautiful CoCaLo Pinwheel Quilted Comforter is not only a great fit for a baby’s cot, it would also make a lovely soft spot for a precious little one to practise tummy time. Baby Harriet loves to nap with it but our 3-year old and even 5-year old like to snuggle up with it whenever they can too, it’s definitely a quilt that will be enjoyed well past the baby stage.

cocalo-comforter

This beautiful comforter has a cosy 100% cotton outer that is comfortable to touch and gentle against the skin with a lightweight polyester filling for extra fluffiness. Bonus: Because busy mums have better things to do than tediously washing their laundry by hand CoCaLo comforters can be machine washed (cold, gentle cycle), it’s the simple things in life that make me happy.

cocalo-fb

Do you love the pretty CoCaLo look as much as I do? There is plenty more where that came from with matching sheets, blankets, bumpers and change pad covers to complete your stylish nursery. The Pinwheel Quilted Comforter is currently available in four stylish colours: Petal Pink, Orchid Hush, Starlight Blue and neutral Grey, which shade is your favourite?
