Smiggle

Term 1, done and dusted! Four of my students have settled in beautifully this year but the last little one is not so keen on this whole school business. We are trying our very best to change her mind and have been showering her with special treats and fun rewards, after all who doesn’t love a trip to Smiggle with her sister-squad?

Smiggle is home to a kaleidoscope of colours, pretty prints and funky finds, basically everything my girls could wish for. As a busy mum of six I love being able to find all I need in one place and Smiggle is cool, quick and the ultimate one-stop-shop for school gear, it’s a win for everyone! Here are some of the treasures my girls have collected:

Writing out your spelling words is suddenly a lot more interesting when you have a pretty notebook to write them in and Miss 8 has discovered her wild side with the Galaxy Notebook and Markers (RRP $24.95). This animal print spiral A5 notebook comes with a handy attached pencil case and 6 coloured fine-tip markers, the all-in-one homework solution. Now here’s to seeing more green ticks and less red crosses!

Miss 10 joined the jungle gang with the matching Galaxy Twin Zip Pencil Case (RRP $22.95), a spacious zip-up pencil case with loads of room for all her writing must-haves. With all her markers, pencils, pens and erasers within reach she is ready for lots more story writing, she is definitely the one with the wildest imagination! The black is a bit more grown-up and was popular with miss 12 too who scored the Galaxy Drink Bottle for this season.

With all the stress that comes with going to school, night time has become a challenge for our little Hattie. Audio books (and LeapStory) have been a real sanity saver for us and she loves snuggling up in a cosy corner to listen to her favourite stories with her own Smiggle Foldable Headphones (RRP $29.95) on. Her lovely mint green headphones have soft ear pads and an adjustable headband, so they can be made to fit her small head perfectly (just!). Peace of mind for parents: These headphones have a limited volume to protect young ears.

As always, just when you’re on your way to the shop counter you spot all those gorgeous pens, pencils and novelty erasers… we can never resist adding a few more stationery must-haves to our shopping basket! We have a soft spot for things with lovely scents and Smiggle has never let us down with all their fragrant options. This Unicorn Universe Scented Eraser (RRP $3.95) is rather sweet and at less than a fiver they’re the cutest little add-on for a birthday gift.

If your fussy tween is feeling too old for busy prints and patterns do not fear, Smiggle Sorbets is here to save the day (I told you you can find everything you need in one place!). These classy backpacks are plain in colour but full of personality, offering all the handy features of the famous Smiggle backpacks in timeless pastel colours for the girls and neat navy and grey options for the boys. The Sorbets backpack is available in three different sizes/styles (RRP $42.95 – $64.95) to suit every occasion. We’ve put them to the test and we’re giving them the thumbs up!

VTech

It has taken her almost two whole terms but miss Sybbie is finally managing a tear-free and no-panic school drop off most days! We’ve worked very hard to get to this point and I am so proud of her (but also of myself) for persevering, there were so many tears and we even considered taking her out of school all together. I have to admit we pulled out all the bribes to win her over and Sybil has been rather spoilt but it was for a good cause. Who wouldn’t try their best when this gorgeous VTech gift is up for grabs?

With its pretty pink colour, swirly design and heart shaped window this VTech Secret Safe (RRP $69.95, ages 6-11) instantly brought a sparkle to Sybil’s eye. She’s been having loads of fun discovering this girly gadget and with 7 different activities and games there is still plenty more to learn. (In fact Sybil loves it so much that she’s been trying to sneak it to school several times, but of course this mama is not that easily fooled!

As the name suggests the ‘Secret Safe’ Diary Selfie Music is brilliant at keeping your secrets safe and secure. Protected with super smart facial technology and/or a number password only the true owner is able to unlock the magic, now that’s clever! Behind the sweet pink cover hides a full colour screen where you can write diary entries, record voice messages and (using the front/back cameras) take selfies, photos and videos so you can put together your very own special journal. You can even decorate your snaps with cool effects and cute add-ons.

Typing/spelling is not Sybil’s strongest point but her visual diary is coming along beautifully and I just love seeing our days from her perspective and sharing in her highlights and favourite moments. With the help of the clock and alarm she knows exactly what time to get up for school or when to get ready for an outing. Add to that a real ‘address book’ and she’s becoming quite the secretary, I guess you’re never too young to be organised.

But there is way more to discover and do than just keep a diary. The Secret Safe is fitted with a music player with 4 built-in songs (you can add your own too), you can raise three virtual pets, play one of eight different learning games and other fun activities. By playing the games kids can practice typing, solve a sudoku puzzle , do maths exercises, work on spelling and train other handy skills.

Sybil’s top three of things to do on her ‘Secret Safe’ Diary Selfie Music are playing fashion designer in the My Stylist app (it’s like stepping into a virtual dressing room and trying on all kinds of fancy clothes and accessories), caring for her pet puppy and singing along to all her High School Musical tunes. By adding in a microSD card we’ve given her even more storage for more secrets and more smiles.

VTech toys are available at major department stores, select online stores and independent toy retailers across Australia.

Back 2 School Target

Confession time: In two short weeks my babies are starting school and I am terrified, in fact I am losing sleep over it. Kindy was sort of okay but now they are going to (insert scary voice here) ‘the big school’. Since I never went to school here in Australia I am extra nervous about it all, probably more nervous than they are! Everything about school is different in The Netherlands, from the age they start school (there is no such thing as kindy, Dutch children start primary school at 4 years old) and what/how they teach to the fact that Dutch children don’t wear uniforms and come home to eat their lunch.

This whole Aussie school business may be totally new to me and I am feeling completely lost on most fronts, but when it comes to shopping school supplies I think I’ve got it all under control:

Boys RunnersWith the school booklet in hand and some helpful advice from other mothers under my belt I managed to put together a complete shopping list that covers absolutely everything, or so I hope. From school uniforms and school shoes (don’t forget the runners) to lunchboxes and drink bottles and of course all the necessary school stationery bits, almost all items on my list are now ticked off so we’re good to go.

Master 5's pick: Printing Paper and new textas

Master 5’s pick: Printing Paper ($3) and new textas ($3 per pack)

NotebookWith only two weeks of school holidays left you’ll probably find that you just don’t have time to go from store to store to collect (amd compare prices for) all your school supplies. Luckily Target is offering a helping hand with a huge range of Back to School products at the best prices, allowing you to enjoy a one-stop-shop and be done in a flash. You can even shop ‘all the tools, all the cool’ online so you don’t have to leave home!

Lexar USB StickTimes have changed a lot since I went to school (and that’s not even that long ago!) and these days kids need more than just a nice pencil case filled with a new set of pencils, a gluestick and an eraser. It won’t be long before my little students will need USB sticks, endless supplies of printing paper and even their own tablet, call it the digital days. I was glad to see Target has those areas covered too with affordable options that won’t break the family budget.
