EK Books

Castles and crowns, glamour and gowns, tea parties and tiaras… if you thought the life of a princess is always easy, think again. Author Stephanie Ward and illustrator Shaney Hyde are welcoming you into the colourful world of Princess Arabella in this beautiful story published by EK Books:

Every year Princess Arabella, adored by her loving parents, is granted one special wish. She uses her royal wish for the most wonderful things, like pretty pink puppies and fluttery fairies. One thing she didn’t wish for, but she got it anyway, was a royal baby brother called prince Avery…

That year Arabella uses her annual wish to request a pencil with the amazing power to make anything she draws become reality. There is no limit to her art, her inventions are simply spectacular and it all comes together beautifully in her carefully designed garden party. Unfortunately Prince Avery turns out to be particularly good at disturbing Arabella’s perfect life and she decides something has to be done in Arabella and the Magic Pencil (RRP $24.99).

Featuring sweet watercolour art and magnificent words that have a royal ring to them this book is a joy to read and look at. Combining the power of magic with a wise lesson, Arabella and the Magic Pencil will help young readers to see the blessing a new sibling can bring.

You can find ‘Arabella and the Magic Pencil’ in leading book stores across Australia.

VTech

Now that the highly anticipated July toy catalogues have arrived all my children are busy taking notes, writing wish lists and circling favourites. I have started squirrelling away bits and pieces for the December month and our kids’ August/September birthdays (5 of them!) and also picked some well deserved rewards for the excellent report cards the kids brought home this week.

To her great disappointment poor miss Hattie is not old enough for a report card just yet but especially for the school holidays (and with mummy’s sanity in mind) she was treated to this magical VTech gift anyway. I have no doubt it will bring us plenty of smiles and entertainment these coming weeks, look at that happy face!

Brightly coloured and pretty as a picture the Magical Lights Unicorn (RRP $39.95, ages 18 months+) is sure to make the heart of any little unicorn lover beat a little faster. Just like a real unicorn she is full of magic and mystery and there are many different ways to play and learn with this beautiful creature. It always amazes me how quickly kids work out a new toy without needing a manual and this is no exemption, Hattie is having so much fun exploring.

Let’s start with her eye catching looks: The Magical Lights Unicorn is quite a large toy with rounded shapes and big buttons perfect for curious toddler hands. By touching the buttons on her side or her necklace you can interact with this mystical creature and hear words, short phrases and catchy songs. She has a luscious fabric rainbow mane, her pink hooves are fitted with smooth wheels for easy trotting around the house and when you squeeze her tail she even flaps her beautiful wings so you can make her fly through the sky.

The unicorn comes with 7 charms in different colours and shapes which can be placed onto three unique magic hearts on her body and head. By clicking a charm to a magic heart you trigger a special unicorn horn rainbow light show and the Magical Lights Unicorn even tells you which precious charm you’ve placed onto her crown and lights up in the matching colour, how clever is that? She loves testing your recognition skills by asking you to find a specific colour or shape and when you put the right charm in place you are rewarded with praise and songs.

If you really want to teach your child some impressive new skills you can put your unicorn in French mode, now that’s what you call an educational toy! She teaches French colours and phrases and even sing her ballads in the French tongue, Hattie may not understand all (or pretty much nothing) but that doesn’t stop her from trying to copy the words which is rather adorable to listen to.

A little note… We obviously love our Magical Lights Unicorn and I think any child will adore her, however from a mother’s point of view I feel I must mention my only small negative: While the 7 charms do come with a sweet purple plate, they do not actually click onto/attach to the plate which means they could get lost quite easily. We have solved this little issue by storing the heart plate and charms in a ziplock bag when not in use but it would have been great if the charms could click to the plate for easy and safe storage.

The Magical Lights Unicorn is exclusively available at Target stores across Australia and online.

Magical moments with Myla

VTech

Like many other girls our little ladies go absolutely crazy for unicorns. Unicorn jewellery, unicorn cupcakes, unicorn headbands and unicorn stationery, they just can’t enough of these magical creatures! I have gently tried to convince miss 5 that there is no such thing as a real unicorn, but I have to admit that VTech has come pretty close…

Myla the Magical Make-Up Unicorn (RRP $79.95, ages 5+) is beautiful soft unicorn that is sure to charm little fans with her many magical features. Sybbie has been in absolute awe of Myla and the two have been inseparable since their first encounter, she now accompanies us on all our adventures.

Measuring 37cm tall Myla is quite a large toy, which means she gives rather impressive hugs and is easy to handle for small children. You can pose her legs so she can stand up independently and she can even move her head and blink her eyes like a real animal. When you touch her back Myla rewards you with compliments (eg. You are special) and encouragements (eg. Be confident) which encourages interaction between Myla and her owner.

Myla comes with a special microphone that makes her sing a selection of fun and inspirational songs, just hold the microphone in front of her mouth and she’ll perform her latest track for you. Miss Sybbie really enjoys doing Myla’s mane and tail with the included comb and accessories (she has even learnt to braid) however her favourite past-time is by far doing Myla’s make-up.

Just in case you are anything like me: Don’t worry, there is no mess involved! Using the magic make-up brush and a colourful make-up palette you can decorate Myla over and over again with the most beautiful rainbow colours. Simply touch a colour on the palette with the brush and then touch Myla’s horn, eyes or wings to see them light up like she comes flying straight out of a fairytale (this looks especially amazing with the lights off).

VTech toys are available at major department stores, select online stores and independent toy retailers across Australia.

Penguin

It’s only day 4 of term 1 and the twins are already complaining that their homework is too easy and the school readers boring. They absolutely love books and finished all the class readers last year so it’s time for some fresh new reads that are a bit more exciting.

Jinny & Cooper

I know a pet guinea pig doesn’t sound very exciting at all, but Cooper is not your ordinary guinea pig. This hairy creature may be small in size but he has big stories to tell and quite the attitude (and appetite!) too. Jinny and her brother Tyrone have come to accept that their talking pet is pretty special, check out the latest adventure of this fabulous trio:

In ‘Jinny & Cooper: Revenge of the Stone Witch’ (RRP $14.99) a new girl comes to stay at the house of Jinny’s neighbour Mrs. Goodfellow. At first it seems like Katie will make a great friend, but soon enough things are getting a little strange and there seems to be something a bit ‘off’ about their new neighbour… When Tyrone adopts a new fish called Torpedo the siblings and guinea pig Cooper start an investigation into the previous owner of the goldfish and they discover the story of the ‘Stone Witch’. This mysterious witch is out to get them, but until they find out the identity of the Stone Witch they better be on high alert!
