If you are mum of little ones in kindy or primary school you are (hopefully) well aware this week was Book Week, all those lovely costume photos on Facebook were hard to miss! For our twins it was the first time they were part of Book Week and they excitedly took part in the Book Week Parade together with their kindy class (miss 4 even managed to win a prize!). What you may not know is that today (between 5-7pm, depending on where you are in Australia) we celebrate The Reading Hour, a very important initiative all parents should know about.
The Reading Hour by Love2Read is all about encouraging Australian parents to read more with their children. Recent research has shown that Australia’s literacy rates are critically low, a big reason to worry and it is up to us as parents to make a change. Helping your children fall in love with reading is easier than you may think: Spend 10 minutes reading with your child every day, that’s just over 1 hour a week! If you do more than that already that’s fantastic, if you are yet to start this is a fabulous beginning and every page you read counts.
During today’s Reading Hour parents all across Australia will read to their children simultaneously, make sure you have your books ready for tonight! Families are also invited to take part in one of the many special Reading Hour events that are being organised all over the country, check the Events Calendar to see what’s on near you. If you could do with a new read why not download your FREE copy of the fabulous e-book COWZAT!, hurry as it is only available today.
One of the first English books I purchased for my children, before they were even born, was Alison Jay’s Alphabet and it is still a hot favourite in our house. If you enjoy Alison’s whimsical illustrations as much as I do you’ll love this fantastic offer I spotted at Happy Little Hippos: Buy 4 Alison Jay books and get the 5th FREE! There are 7 different titles to choose from, just add the five books of your choice to your basket and the discount will be automatically applied at checkout. Hurry as offer ends August 29, 2013.
