During our weeks of home isolation hip daddy finally finished off our outdoor cubby house and it has been a source of joy, giggles and adventures for all the kids (and even the pets). Tea parties, mums and dads, schools, deserted islands, picnics… there is no limit to their imagination and I love hearing their chatter as they play. Unfortunately the weather for outside play has now ended so we’re snuggling up inside instead. Bye bye cubby house snacks and hello toasty winter treats, welcome to the big LeapFrog Bake Off!

The adorable Number Loving Oven (RRP $39.95, ages 2+) is sure to appeal to budding bakers and curious chefs, our two pre-schoolers have been cooking up a storm. Yummy pizza, pretty cupcakes, a fried egg or even a freshly baked loaf of bread, this cute little oven does it all!

The Number Loving Oven is cleverly designed to suit a range of ages, development stages and learning interests, making it a great toy for siblings to share. For early learners the oven brings different types of food and colours, a shape sorting oven tray, the puzzle of building a pizza and a baguette, a sizzling stove top, a door that opens and closes and of course lights, sounds and songs.

As your master chef gets older he/she will start recognising the numbers on the pizza and the oven timer, you can learn about temperature and time, practise sharing and dividing food between guests and serving food on a plate with a spatula.  Seeing how our 2-year old, 4-year old and even 7-year old ‘play kitchen’ together with the Number Loving Oven, yet notice, learn and enjoy different things about it, proves it is a toy that will last the distance in a growing family.

By moving the timer, opening and closing the door and pressing the green chef’s hat button children will hear a wide range of learning questions (Let’s see, how long will that take to bake? Set the oven to four. That’s it! Let’s cook and count), encouraging sentences (That turned out beautifully! Mmmm, delicious. Let’s share), cooking information (1. Pre-heat, this little oven must pre-heat before you start to bake a treat. 4. Hot hot hot, to cook the pizza that’s you’ve got) and catchy songs about hand washing, cooking, waiting and counting. Plenty of kitchen chat to make cooking fun!

Bonus: As a mum I am super chuffed that all the food items fit neatly inside the oven, just close the door and everything is properly tidied away. No missing pieces and easy to store, winning! It is also a perfect compact size to keep in the cupboard at Grandma’s for when the grandies come visit.

You can find the LeapFrog Number Loving Oven at a Big W or other good toy store near you and online at selected retailers.

As a mum of six little ones I have experienced my fair shares of allergies, intolerances and sensitivities so I wasn’t exactly surprised to discover our little Ted is struggling in that department too. So far we are not having any luck finding a food he doesn’t react to (aside from breastmilk), with his chubby baby body covered in angry red rashes and dry patches after every try. Eczema runs in the family so I was super interested to get stuck into this eye-opening guide by Karen Fischer:

As a successful nutritionist and mother of an eczema-sufferer, and after working with eczema patients for more than 15 years, Karen Fischer knows first hand the impact eczema can have on your life, but also how much of a difference your diet can make in managing it. On a mission to ban nasty skin rashes and fight the eczema misery she has created The Eczema Detox (RRP $34.99), a life-changing book that combines the science behind food choices and the way they affect on your skin with delicious skin-happy recipes for eczema patients of all ages.

Filled with loads of healthy, nutritious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, snacks and even drinks changing to this low-chemical diet for eliminating skin inflammation is a piece of cake. The book will use some of your pantry staples but also introduce you to new flavours and ingredients that will help improve your skin and wellbeing. We’ve been testing some of  these treats at home and I can highly recommend the Steamed Salmon with Maple Dressing, the Protein Smoothie Bowl, the Sweet Potato Stack and Banana Carob Icy Poles.

Only released last month ‘The Eczema Detox’ has been such a huge hit that is already out of stock and currently undergoing a re-print. Don’t miss out on your chance to ditch the itch and pre-order your copy today, new stock is due to arrive in April.

While I admit that breakfast time with five small kids is rather rushed, it’s often around dinnertime that things get a little ‘heated’ at our house. After a long day this mama is pretty tired, I generally have a grumpy, hungry baby hanging off my leg and a table to clear and set, no wonder I struggle to keep an eye on all the pots and pans at the same time! Thankfully Décor is coming to the rescue of busy parents by taking the hassle out of your next rice dish with this clever unit:

Don’t worry about caked on pans and endless stirring, with the Décor Microsoft® Rice Cooker and Vegetable Steamer (RRP $13.99, 2.75L) your favourite rice will be cooked to perfection every single time.

decor-rice-cookerUsing the Décor Rice Cooker is so easy even grandparents, babysitters and sleep deprived parents can do it: Simply use the included measuring cup to determine the right amount of raw rice and boiling water and pop the cooker in your microwave. Seventeen minutes of cooking and five minutes of resting later your rice is ready to be served, that’s just enough time to whip up a nice sauce, fry your chicken and set the table.

With a generous 2.75 litre capacity the Décor Rice Cooker is big enough to make up to four cups of cooked rice, perfect for a small family or side dish. It comes complete with steam release vent lid, transparent measuring cup and white rice paddle for stirring and serving. And there are plenty of other handy Décor features too: it has cold touch handles, is BPA-free, dishwasher safe, freezer safe and of course Australian made.

While you can of course use your Rice Cooker to prepare ‘just’ rice, it is also great for cooking all-in-one meals. Yay for less dirty dishes afterwards! Add tasty vegetables, herbs, spices and/or garlic to your liking to create an entire meal in one single container, easy peasy. If you happen to have leftovers you can conveniently seal and store the closed Rice Cooker in the fridge and reheat it in the microwave later on.

Tuesday’s Rice Cooker dinner of chicken, cucumber and Mexican inspired rice was a big hit with the kids. With added tomato, kidney beans, coriander and a mix of spices it was a very versatile dish that covered all the food groups, and hardly any washing up to do!

ecostore

As Christmas approaches and Spring weather finally peeks its head around the corner I am most definitely starting to feel the urge to clear out and clean up, getting ready for family time, visitors and a fresh start to a new year. ecostore helps you Spring clean your home the green way, rewarding you with a fresh and fragrant house whilst leaving yucky chemicals outside:

As a busy mum of five I am forever cleaning up sticky fingerprints, gooey splats, little drops, big spills and millions of crumbs, this handy spray wipes away the mess and smells beautifully. I love knowing my children can touch our cupboards and floors without getting in contact with nasty chemicals.

ecostore-toilet-cleanerCleaning the toilet is not exactly an enjoyable chore but with our big family it is a daily must-do. Think again: ecostore Toilet Cleaner Citrus (RRP $5.99, 500ml) is a powerful, plant based alternative that kills the bad but respects the bowl (and the environment), plus it leaves the littlest room of the house smelling fresh and fruity.

ecostore-laundry-powderWhile a lovely cleaning scent is nice, for some people it can cause some problems with irritated skin and airways. ecostore comes to the rescue of allergy sufferers with a range of gentle, fragrance-free laundry products, like the ecostore Laundry Powder Ultra Sensitive (RRP $7.99, 1kg) and ecostore Laundry Liquid Ultra Sensitive (RRP $8.99, 1 litre). Tough on stains and kind on skin it’s an ideal pick for newborn babies and those with sensitive skin. Bonus: Being super concentrated a little goes a long way!

ecostore-dish-liquid-grapefruitEven though we are lucky to have a dishwasher, I still prefer to wash baby Hattie’s bottles, bowls and baby toys by hand so I know they are thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed. Approved by Environmental Choice NZ the ecostore Dish Liquid Grapefruit (RRP $6.99, 1 litre) will give you both perfectly clean dishes AND peace of mind. For a neutral wash look no further than the fragrance-free alternative, ecostore Dish Liquid Ultra Sensitive (RRP $6.99, 1 litre).

By the way, did you know ecostore’s plastic packaging is made from renewable sugarcane? It’s 100% recyclable and helps to reduce your carbon footprint. Just another way ecostore is making everyday cleaning a little gentler on the world we live in.
