We all know that when buying Christmas presents it is easy to fall for popular items that kids are crazy about now but that end up at the bottom of the cupboard very quickly. One of my favourite gifts to buy for my kids and others is a good game, we already have a shelf full but I keep finding more awesome games to add to our collection. Games are a great way to get the family together so why not add a weekly ‘game night’ to your list of New Year resolutions?
Australian store Coccinella has recently welcomed some fabulous new games to the range and as always owner Renata has selected unique brands that you don’t find in most other stores. If you’ve already discovered Kalimba you know all about the original artwork this Polish brand is famous for. Aside from the quirky Kalimba soft toys there are now some fantastic Kalimba games to choose from too.
I think we all know the age old game of Domino, the rules are simple and it is a great game for little ones to start with. The rules of every Domino game are the same but it is the pictures that makes them all different. Kalimba’s Domino ($19.95) has an animal theme and features clear, easy to recognise images with bright colours that little people will enjoy. My kids can’t get enough of playing this Domino game and even miss 2 is already playing along.
For older chilren my top pick would be Plus Minus ($19.95), a fun educational game that teaches young children about adding and substracting (a very important skill!). Each addition or substraction is split into three cards so kids need to look at the numbers (and pictures) on the cards to put the three pieces in the right order. Like all Kalimba games this set comes in a sturdy little storage box so you don’t lose any cards.
If there is one popular game that is open to different variations and themes it has to be Snakes & Ladders, the options are endless. Oh These Cats ($29.95) is based on the Snakes & Ladders concept and tells the story of a bunch of little kittens on their way home. They find many adventures and obstacles along the way, from dangerous dogs and wild cats to bottles of milk, who will get to the warm bed first? Suitable for 2-4 players.
