Pan Macmillan Australia

Who needs weekends with pubs and clubs when you can have Friday nights on the couch with Better Homes and Gardens? I love starting the weekend with some recipe inspiration, my girls always enjoy the craft ideas and secretly we all wish for our very own Rob Palmer to lend a hand around the house. I may not be able to give you Rob, but with this cool book of tricks your own hubby is sure to become your favourite handyman:

Especially for his first book Dad Hacks (RRP $29.99) Australia’s favourite DIY guru Rob Palmer has handpicked 101 of his best tradie tips, household hacks and savvy savings that will help Aussie families save time and money.

Whether dad’s an amateur cook (cook a scrumptious scone or boil the perfect egg), a fun family-man (build a backyard slingshot or play supermarket hide-and-seek), an outdoor guy (pull out a tree stump or light a fire with corn chips) or a tool trainee (fix a sticky lock or drill into tiles), with these and many more Dad Hacks Rob Palmer has all types of fathers covered. Everyone knows kids like to believe their dad knows all and can do everything and this great guy guide is exactly what dads need to keep up the image.

With Father’s Day just around the corner ‘Dad Hacks’ would make a perfect gift for the special man in your life (and the rest of the family can reap the benefits too!).

For quite some time a large colourful box has been sitting on display in our kitchen. It was actually rather in the way, but I had to leave it in a clearly visible spot where miss 3 would see it over and over again. Eventually her love for Peppa Pig was stronger than her fear of the toilet and with her eye firmly on the prize she finally went on the toilet voluntarily. Oh the joys of toilet training a stubborn child!

Peppa Pig’s Lights & Sounds Family Home (RRP $149, ages 2+) is a fabulous play house with 4 big storeys and 7 rooms full of pretend play fun. Measuring over half a metre tall the house is really impressive, it would make the perfect ‘main gift’ under the Christmas tree for little Peppa Pig fans.

Let’s get this tour started, shall we? As we enter the house through the front door and set foot on the doormat the light turns on: Welcome home! Downstairs you find the living room with a comfy couch and the kitchen where Peppa and George love eating spaghetti at the kitchen table. There are plenty of other yummy foods waiting in the fridge too. One floor up is Peppa and George’s bedroom with the famous purple bunk bed (of course Peppa sleeps in the top bunk) and the bathroom with a bath and a toilet (yes, Peppa is a big girl too).

Daddy Pig and Mummy Pig sleep on the third floor and that’s also where Mummy Pig does her work on the computer. A cool fold out ladder gives access to the attic, what a great place to play! You can even open up the attic window and look at the stars with the telescope! And don’t forget the outdoor space, there is nothing Peppa likes more than a good splash in a big muddy puddle. Loyal Peppa Pig fans are sure to recognise and enjoy the sounds and phrases that are played when using the doormat and puddle, eg.’Peppa, George, bath time’, ‘Goodnight my little piggies’, ‘the cookies are ready!’ and of course ‘if you jump in muddy puddles you must wear your boots’.

With so many things to do and discover and with 13 accessories and 3 figurines (Peppa Pig, George and Zoe Zebra) the Peppa Pig’s Lights & Sounds Family Home keeps kids busy for ages. Since finally earning her Peppa Pig House Hattie and Sybil have spent many hours (re)decorating, making up little stories and going on piggy adventures, without any fights! I think the large size and many pieces make this a great toy for siblings or friends to share. It really encourages young children to use their imagination and helps them recreate, process and understand every day situations through play.

There is plenty more fun to be had with the help of four additional Peppa Pig Little Rooms play sets. Get creative in the kitchen with ‘Cooking with Daddy Pig’, relax with ‘Movie Night with Mummy Pig’, have a giggle with ‘Playdate Fun with Suzy Sheep’ or enjoy a makeover with ‘Dressing up with Granny Pig’. These gorgeous add-ons are sold separately and allow you to grow your Peppa Pig home at your own pace.

Peppa Pig’s Lights & Sounds Family Home is at Big W, Myer and independent retailers across Australia.

The key to keeping your keys safe

Call it baby brain or just being forgetful, but a little while ago I found myself crying on the doorstep after I locked myself (and the kids) out of the house. Generally I am quite good at remembering my house keys, but a combination of circumstances resulted in me closing the door behind me with my keys still sitting on my kitchen bench… que panic attack and big pregnancy tears!

We all know prevention is better than cure, so my best tip is to always store your keys in the same place. We put up one of these cute birdhouses right next to our kitchen door, that way I can hang my keys up as soon as I come home and grab them on my way out. You can purchase a single or double bird house and there are lots of different colour combinations to choose from.

If you do end up on the wrong side of a locked door a hidden key could instantly solve your problem. The days of hiding a spare key under your doormat or in the letterbox are long gone, but there are plenty of other sneaky hiding spots around the house (or you could just leave one at your trusty neighbour). I’ve seen wall thermometers with a hidden compartment, a magic pot plant with a double base or even a fake rock with a secret opening to slot your key in, how clever!

Of course a lost or forgotten key can happen to the best of us so be prepared and, depending on where in Australia you live, add Perth Locksmith (or another friendly rescuer that’s local to you) to your phone contacts. That way your helping hand is always just a phone call away, no matter what time of day emergency strikes, and they’ll have you safely back inside your home in no time.

Do you have a fabulous way to store, remember or hide your house keys? Let me know, I’d love to hear your tips.

Step inside Rose Petal Cottage

Isn’t it amazing how well the old man in red knows our children? Even though he only visits once a year he knows exactly what they’re into and how they like to spend their time. Beautifully wrapped and addressed to ‘the girls’ this large Worlds Apart gift delivered just the smiles we expected:

As soon as I laid eyes on the beautiful Rose Petal Cottage (Ages 2+) I could picture our four girls in there; making up stories, playing mums, dads, fairies and princesses, sharing secrets, having tea parties and enjoying the blessing that is sisters. Measuring a generous 108 x 98 x 70 cm in size this lovely home is spacious enough for siblings or friends to share and will provide hours and hours of pretend play fun.

While the old man with the white beard took all the credit for this amazing present Hip Daddy did the hard work and assembled the cottage so the adventure could begin. Setting up was a simple case of first connecting the metal pieces to build the cottage frame, then to slide the frame into the sturdy, wipe clean cover which zips up nice and snug so it stays in place perfectly.

What really makes Rose Petal Cottage so unique and special is that the decorative cover is printed with the loveliest little details on both the in- and outside. On the outside this delightful playhouse features cladded walls, a shingled roof, lanterns, birds, gumboots near the door, flowers and more. It’s pretty much the dreamy cottage you see in your favourite fairytales!

On the inside this sweet house is homey and welcoming with gorgeous details like a doormat, floorboards, a fireplace, a real mirror and a useable shelf complete with photo frame so you can display your favourite picture. It even has a window with country style shutters that open and close!

You can enter Rose Petal Cottage through the cottage door, which can be ‘locked’ with a latch. The door is attached with velcro so you can also remove it completely if you wish (something baby Harriet worked out very quickly). One of the metal poles is conveniently fitted with hinges, allowing you to fully open up the side of the cottage and in doing so extend your play area.

As a special bonus Rose Petal Cottage comes partially furnished with a homey cooking unit, perfect for whipping up a batch of pretend cookies, tasty muffins and yummy pies for little guests. The removable cooking unit has an oven door that really opens (you’ll find a cardboard muffin tray inside to get you started) and the stove top knobs turn like the real deal.
