Like any good doll-mother our girls always make sure their beloved dolls are not short of anything. They sleep in the softest bed, get their hair brushed till it shines and wear the prettiest outfits, in fact their collection of festive frocks is even more impressive than my own! With warm weather finally on the horizon here are our girls’ Top 5 Australian Girl summer dresses:

Every year Australian Girl Doll fans flock (or should I say frock?) in to store hoping they can get their hands on that year’s exclusive Christmas dress. Being a limited edition this special number is always highly coveted and once it’s gone it gone! The 2016 Christmas Dress (RRP $28.95) is perfect for a wonderful Aussie Christmas with family and friends, I love how it combines the traditional red/white Christmas colours in the top with a more modern, casual floral print on the bottom half. As the cherry on top a delightful Christmas themed doll necklace is included, that’s your doll’s Christmas outfit sorted.

If there is one design my girls would love to wear themselves it would have to be the Sunny Polka Dress (RRP $24.95), with a fluffy two-layer tule underskirt this gorgeous pink polkadot frock is sure to make your doll the belle of the ball. It’s perfect for pretend proms, ballroom dances and birthday bashes and if it came in big girl sizes my little ladies would definitely be lining up for it.

The Summer Lime Dress (RRP $25.95) is the ideal casual dress for active girls who want to enjoy a nice day out in the sun. Made from soft 100% cotton this cute anchor-print dress is super comfortable, easy to put on and great for both everyday activities and special outings: from beach to bike to BBQ, this dress is your pick.

If you feel a proper party dress needs a bit of sparkle look no further than the Elegant Hi Lo Dress (RRP $27.95). Featuring plenty of glitter, a tule overlay and an eye-catching hi-lo shape this dress will make little eyes shine with delight. As a finishing touch a matching headband (could also be used as a corsage) is included. Pink is a popular party colour all year around, so this dress is sure to become a wardrobe favourite.

Last but not least there is the playful Black n White Dress (RRP $24.95), a great choice for girls who are not into pink and (looking at my daughters) particularly liked by older doll owners. Combining a classic black/white checkered fabric with a cheeky polkadot lining and plenty of ruffles this halter neck dress is all kinds of lovely. It even comes with neat white undies to wear underneath!

Target

I know some people say Christmas decorations shouldn’t go up before the first of December (or if you are Dutch like me you have to wait until after Sinterklaas) but that doesn’t mean you can’t start your shopping yet. Most of the items on my December gift list are already ticked off and last week I dropped by Target and purchased some lovely pieces for our Christmas lunch:

Celebrate Christmas Table

White and sparkly, purple and glittery, pink and shiny, there are plenty of modern Christmas colour schemes to choose from but personally I like the traditional colours. I love a beautifully made up table and as a family of six I have plenty of big family gatherings ahead of me, it’s so much fun setting the Christmas table for a lovely group of special people.

Celebrate Share Plate

Especially for the December celebrations Target has released a festive range of tableware in a classic red and white colour scheme, just how I like it! The exclusive Celebrate collection captures the essence of Christmas (or any other special occasion) with words like joy, share, friends, celebrate, family and enjoy printed on beautiful and practical tableware. From porcelain plates and serving platters to glass tumblers and champagne flutes and from cake stands and butter bowls to table cloths, placemats and much more, they’ve got your next party covered.

Celebrate Butter Bowl

With 4 young children and a bunch of cousins and little friends I am afraid lengthy, fancy meals are out of the question so we’re keeping it simple this year with lots of yummy ‘easy’ dishes that can be enjoyed in between games, play and stories. Homemade herb butter in this sweet Celebrate Bowl with Spreader ($10) with freshly baked baguette served on the Celebrate Sandwich Platter ($15), a refreshing fruit salad, quiche, vegies and dips, Dutch cheese and plenty of other tasty treats to fill hungry tummies of all sizes, it may not be your traditional Christmas lunch but I have no doubt my kids will give the menu the thumbs up.

Celebrate Serving Platter

Of course you all know I like to shop smart so I made sure to combine some of the special Christmas pieces with a few ‘plain’ items for everyday use. The red table runner ($5) and large Canteen Plates ($7) can be purchased all year around and with their bright red outside these simple yet elegant plates are the perfect match for the smaller Celebrate Plates ($15 per 3-pack), they look just beautiful together. Next to the plates I will pop a Celebrate Christmas Cracker ($7 per 6-pack), I know the jokes are usually not the best but my kids love them anyway and the little hats make for the cutest photos.

Celebrate Enjoy Plate

Now that the twins have learnt to write they are very keen to give each of their school buddies a Christmas card on the last day of term so on my way out I quickly grabbed a few packs of these Handmade Christmas Cards ($4 per 10-pack), they are very strategically placed next to the checkouts so you can’t miss them. The cards feature the same beautiful words as the rest of the Celebrate range and they’re very well priced, bonus!

Jrfashionista

We all know the big names by now and it is nice to shop at familiar stores where you know what to expect and find the brands and styles you love. On the other hand it is also lots of fun to discover a new shop on the block, something that’s a little different and original. Here at Hip little one we love sharing our hip finds with you and we’re excited to tell you about the newest name on the shopping strip: Jrfashionista.

Striped Summer SkirtAt Jrfashionista you will find a fast growing collection of baby and kids clothing, accesories and toys handpicked by mum Michelle. Michelle is always on the hunt for unique pieces that are fun, on trend and last but not least affordable. We all know dressing little ones can be expensive so it is nice to be able to give the kids wardrobe a nice top up without breaking the bank.

Foral Hooded Vest

When I spotted this gorgeous Floral Hooded Vest online I knew it would be perfect for our little 3-year old daughter who was in desperate need of a cute, comfortable and easy-to-wear garment to keep out the chill. We often hop in and out of the car for school drop offs or a visit to the supermarket and this is zipped vest is so quick to put on, much easier than a big winter jacket. This lovely floral printed vest is available in sizes 2-4 and at just $25 I think it is very well priced too, choose from three different colours.

Wooden Letter GameOne of the latest additions to the store is this cool Wooden Card Alphabet Game ($30). Used on Montessori schools this game uses colourful picture cards and wooden letters to teach young children about the alphabet, as well as stimulate their fine motor skills. The aim of the game is to find the letter that matches the word and picture on the card, great fun and of course educational too. The letters are neatly packed together in a clear bag for easy storage. Also available with numbers.

Everyday Denim JeanJrfashionista caters for boys and girls, sizes depend on the garment. All boys big or small need a nice of pair jeans to wear, my son wears jeans almost every day. Sometimes casual, sometimes dressed up, we all know denim is just so easy to mix and match with other pieces in your wardrobe. The Everyday Denim Jean ($38, size 1-10) would feel right at home in any boy’s wardrobe and is designed to withstand the rough and tumble of active boys who love the outdoors.

Sunday Coffee with Oh My Giddy Aunt

Oh My Giddy Aunt

If you’ve really left it too late with Christmas presents you don’t have many options, a gift voucher it will have to be. But don’t settle for a boring Coles/Myer or Kmart gift card (after all, they usally get spent on groceries or other practical items), grab an Oh My Giddy Aunt gift voucher for a unique, personal present instead. This store is a delight to browse with so many lovely options for the whole family, I would LOVE to get a gift card to spend on beautiful goodies just for me!

Everything in store is picked by the wonderful Nikki, a woman of many talents as you will soon discover in today’s Sunday Coffee:

Oh My Giddy Aunt - Nikki having fun with nieces and nephews

Oh My Giddy Aunt – Nikki having fun with nieces and nephews

What does your ideal Sunday look like?
Snoozing till 8ish… brunching till 12ish…. movies till 2ish… champagne afternoon tea… ABC TV in my PJs at night (I’m a Giddy Aunt – not a Mum, obviously!)

Why did you start Oh My Giddy Aunt?
Before I became a giddy aunt in 2003 I used to be a Fairy Queen (really). I started my fairy shop, Fairies on the Downs, in 1993 and sold it in 1998 and have always loved gifts that are really going to mean something special and be remembered always. A couple of years after I sold the shop I became an Aunt to nine nieces and nephews (over 8 years) and had ideas for things I wanted to create to tell their stories. Each special occasion is a chapter in a family story and keepsakes are such personal ways to commemorate those moments.

Where do you draw your inspiration from for new Oh My Giddy Aunt designs?
Nine nieces and nephews, several honorary nieces and nephews and families past and present!
I love traditional keepsakes and the sentimentality of the past – but I also have a bit of a quirky imagination and sense of humour. My favourite ideas are those that combine all of those elements. I’m not a big fan of fashion or fads and would much rather create something that will be kept forever or passed on to someone else who will add to the story. We personalise a lot of our jewellery with birthstones and hand engraving and the engraving has now determined most of the keepsake gifts in the range too.

My background is a little eclectic: In addition to being a Fairy Queen and a Giddy Aunt,I’ve studied and worked in children’s theatre, written children’s books (including Magenta’s Tartan Socks), taught preschoolers and adults (usually not at the same time) and worked as Development Manager and then National Director for Australian charities promoting child health and protection. I think the imagination from writing and acting, the work with children and families and the business experience have somehow all combined to create Oh My Giddy Aunt and the range!

What is your favourite Oh My Giddy Aunt design and why?
Queen Bee Honeycomb RingsMy favourite design is always the latest one… until the new one comes along! At present it is the Queen Bee Honeycomb range. I wear a set of the three rings and all of my other rings have been feeling very neglected lately as I just wear the honey bees with everything. The little bees are just so sweet and the rings all fit into each other to create a honeycomb so from a distance it looks like a wide, three tone ring but when you get up close you can see the details and find out the story behind it.

What can we expect of Oh My Giddy Aunt in the future?
I have books full of ideas waiting to happen but they all take time. Perhaps I should spend more Sundays working?! Recently Oh My Giddy Aunt welcomed Irish Giddy Uncle Alan Ardiff’s fantastic range of moving jewellery into the collection and I’m looking forward to including a few more designers who share my sense of humour and love of the unique and precious in the coming year. I’ve also got a very big project underway… can’t say too much yet but think “This is Your Life”… and watch this space!

The wait is finally over for fashion savvy mums around Australia as the new Oobi Winter 2012 collection has arrived in stores. Whether it is on Facebook, at the playground, the schoolyard or even the cafe on the corner, everywhere mums meet you hear them talking about Oobi. Shop For Tots is one of the lucky stores that managed to secure the new Oobi designs, take a look at what all the buzz is about:

This gorgeous girls outfit has won the hearts of many mothers nationwide, picturing their little ladies in the stunning Emma Duffle Coat ($89.95, size 2-5). On the inside this pink duffle coat is lined with adorable bunny print fabric, from the outside you can see the lining in the hood but you can show off a little more by rolling up the sleeves. To complete the picture you’ll need the Rebecca Dress $54.95, size 1-5) in matching bunny print. Oobi Duffle Coats are also available in Navy and Olive.

One of the real winners for boys is the Percy Sweater ($54.95, size 0-5), the classic stripes and button up neckline make this a timeless style that can be worn on many occasions and won’t go out of fashion. There is choice from blue/brown and red/olive, both combinations are brilliant for mixing and matching with other items in your boy’s wardrobe (and the darker winter tones won’t show dirty marks easily, a bonus!).

This has to be one of the sweetest looks around, the Sara Floral Shirt ($44.95, size 2-5) is just divine and goes beautifully with other pieces from the new winter collection. As if the floral print is not girly enough the shirt also features ruffles, a big favourite for many girls. Also pictured is the Oobi Pretty Little Bow Belt, available in red and pink and at just $12.95 a real must-have for this winter.

As a mum of boy/girl twins I love finding outfits that go well together, blue and red happen to be my favourite colours so I think these Oobi pieces would be perfect for my kids. In fact it is very easy to dress siblings in Oobi as many of the prints and colours are used in several styles. As always the Oobi range also contains plenty of accessories like hair clips, brooches, headbands and belts, for Oobi kids from top to bottom.

To find out more about Shop For Tots, to browse the Oobi Winter collection and to order online visit www.shopfortots.com.au.

Until Feburary 25, 2012 you can earn yourself some extra Shop For Tots shopping credit: Simply spend $100 in store to get a $15 gift certificate to be used on your next purchase and for even more savings spend $150 = $30 voucher, spend $200 = $40 voucher and spend $300 = $75 voucher. That’s a fantastic offer!

Although I may officially be Dutch I am also a happy and proud resident of Australia. I have been living in Australia for five years now and I have no regrets about making the big move. I have already discovered many beautiful things about Australia including some fantastic Australian brands for children and families. In honour of Australia Day today’s post is about a real Aussie store called Purely4Kids.

Purely4Kids caters for babies, boys and girls all the way up to 14 years old, with a bit of luck this means you can shop for all your kids in just this one store! Australian mums Kim and Amanda have handpicked only Australia’s very best treasures in the fashion, toys, accessories and personal care categories. In fact many of the Purely4Kids items are not only designed but also made in Australia, making this a great place to shop if you are looking for quality products and want to support Australian businesses.

If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting my two little ladies you may have noticed that I absolutely love kimono style garments, the cross-over design is so timeless and cute! I spotted some utterly gorgeous kimono dresses at Purely4Kids, handcrafted right here in Australia by Frankie Small. The Frankie Small label is known for being stylish, durable and functional and the best part is that the garments are made in limited numbers only.

My favourite boys labels instore include Urchin and of course Chalk n Cheese. This fantastic Melbourne based label designs clothing up to size 8, their cool tee’s and polo’s for boys and sweet girly dresses for the girls are very well loved by Australian mums. This season’s Ava dress is absolutely divine with it’s ruffled trims and for the boys I love the striped Pablo Polo. Polo tops are so easy to dress up or down, every boy should own at least one!
