Bye bye nursery, hello toddler room

With the arrival of baby no.6 around the corner we are currently in a mad rush to finish our bedroom puzzle, something we always seem to leave until the very last minute! While we agreed that Harriet would have to vacate the nursery for the new arrival, at not even 2 years old (and still very much our ‘baby’) we also felt she wasn’t quite ready to move into a shared room with one of her older sisters. Our solution: A lovely toddler room fit for our little treasure…

As soon as I saw this dreamy StarBright Toddler Bed (Ages 18 months – 5 years) I knew it would fit our needs perfectly, it ticks every single one of our boxes! Designed for small legs the bed sits close to the ground, this makes getting in and out a breeze and will help your growing toddler feel safe, confident and grown-up. Harriet loves climbing in by herself and testing out her new bed (complete with fake snoring sounds), nap time or not!

Because safety is important to us I really appreciate the protective side panels that will keep little sleepyheads from accidentally tumbling out of bed as they sleep. Manufactured by Worlds Apart this easy-to-assemble bed is made with sturdy, high quality MDF and features a slat base, ensuring a durable and solid construction that is tested to the most stringent safety standards. The cute attached bedside table is even strong enough to double as a parent seat for that last bedtime story, how convenient is that?

Another delightful child-friendly feature of this sweet bed is the built-in night light that helps busy bees drift off to sleep peacefully and will turn off after 15 minutes. The moon-shaped light spreads a calming glow over the bed and projects a starry night sky onto the wall at the same time, it’s like sleeping in space! Unlike with separate night lights there are no dangerous loose cords or cables and it can not fall on the ground when little hands reach for it in the middle of the night.

The gender neutral colour scheme makes the StarBright bed a great choice for boys and girls, it easily fits in with any decor and you can simply dress it up with your favourite linen and wall decor to suit your taste. As I have a soft spot for cool, calming blue I made the bed with a crisp Starlight Blue Striped Fitted Sheet and the matching Pinwheel Quilted Comforter by CoCaLo. Although this bed looks and feels like a ‘big’ bed, thanks to the 140x70cm mattress size you can continue to use your normal cot bed linen which is great news for the family budget.

We have purposely kept Hattie’s room simple but fun with the addition of two pieces from the Worlds Apart BearHug range. To help keep the room organised and to encourage Hattie to tidy up after play we decided on the BearHug Stack Storage, a clever and compact storage unit that holds all her toys and teddies. When in use the three cubes can be separated so she can access all her treasures, and when packed away the unit’s small footprint leaves the room spacious and clean.

Inspired by her older siblings Hattie loves to get crafty which can cause a bit of trouble when she gets her hands on special markers, glitter paint, important paperwork and glue or when she climbs upon our high dining chairs to sit at the big table. This child-proof BearHug Desk solves all our trouble, she can sit at a perfect toddler height, the seat doesn’t wobble or fall over and she has access to her own crayons and paper. I just love this little art desk, I can already tell it will be one of her favourite spots in the house.

To add a pop of colour and brighten the plain walls Hattie and I added a generous sprinkle of the Multi Glitter Confetti Dots, it is like the colours were made to match the BearHug range. I loved how well the removable RoomMates wall decals came up in our girls’ room a few months ago and how easy they were to apply, so it was an obvious choice for Harriet’s toddler room. With 180 stickers per pack there was plenty of glitter to go around, our older girls instantly claimed the left-over dots for their room.

Harriet’s new room has turned into a pretty, playful and peaceful place which we think she will love and hopefully having her own special sanctuary will help make the transition easy and fun during this tricky time of becoming an older sister.

Take A Seat With Babyhood

Almost eight years ago hip daddy and I selected the Babyhood Georgia sleigh cots and change table for our two bundles of joy, I vividly remember how happy and proud I was looking around our gorgeous baby room. Five babies later and we are still using the same nursery furniture every day, clearly our choice for quality and durability has paid off!

Babyhood Table + Chairs

Hopefully we’ll get just as much enjoyment out of the Babyhood Playing Table with 4 Chairs (RRP $249) which we recently added to our living room. As you can probably imagine it can be quite tricky for short legs and arms to (safely) climb on and off high chairs and sit up properly at a big kitchen table, so this child-sized set is making life a lot easier and safer for our growing family.

Babyhood rounded corners

From breakfast in the morning to tea-parties at lunch and from drawing, puzzling and games to snacks after school, our lovely wooden table is in use all day. The chairs also double as a seats on a bus, the frame of a blanket fort or movie theatre seats, there is no lack of imagination here! The kids can hop on and off the chairs with ease without needing help and without getting hurt (yay for rounded corners). Measuring 60x60cm in size there is plenty of surface space and even with all four chairs taken there is enough room on the table for breakfast plates or colouring books.

Babyhood table

Often children’s furniture features bright colours or busy patterns, great for kids but not always a good match for the rest of your home decor. The traditional look of the Babyhood table and chairs fits in effortlessly in most homes and doesn’t date so we are sure to enjoy it for years to come. The beautiful finish and natural colour variances in the warm, chocolate wood are just stunning especially when it catches the sunlight.

Babyhood chair

Not only does the wood look classy and timeless, it is also very strong, solid and eco-friendly. As a busy family with five young children we always think ahead and opt for durability, this table and chairs set is built to last and I am confident it will survive the every day hustle and bustle of our little tribe.

The Babyhood Playing Table + Chairs set is currently available in four classic looks: white, baltic, cedar and chocolate.

Bounce for joy with Bombol

Now that we have dug up most baby goods from storage we’ve finally put together a short shopping list for the last missing bits and pieces. Most items can easily do with some more squishy baby-love but sadly our bouncer has not survived its winter sleep, I am a little sad as it holds sweet memories but there is nothing we can do about it. On the hunt for a lovely replacement I stumbled upon this super stylish number at The Little Haven:

Bamboo Bouncer

The Bamboo, created by Italian designer label Bombol, is a beautiful modern piece of nursery furniture that would look stunning in any nursery or living room. Inspired by the famous properties of nature’s own bamboo this classy seat is light, flexible, durable and strong, in fact it is so strong it can easily hold up to an impressive 18kg (the weight of an average 4-5 year old). From baby bouncer to comfy ‘chaise longue’, what a brilliant investment for young families!

Bamboo SpringFrom sit and play to rest and nap, thanks to the patented Dynamic Backrest the Bamboo bouncer adjusts to your child’s needs effortlessly. Not only can parents adjust the position of the seat without disturbing a sleeping baby, children can also change their position independently simply by shifting their weight, how easy is that? This ability to move positions easily in combination with the ergonomic design encourages healthy development.

You can use the Bamboo from birth (3.5kg onwards) keeping baby comfortable strapped in by the safety harness. However smaller babies might lack the weight to bring Bamboo’s Dynamic Backrest down to the sleeping position so for those lightweight bubbas a special New Born Kit is available. The New Born Kit provides extra head support and adjusts the Bamboo’s performance to the lighter weight of smaller babies.

Bombol Bamboo

The Bombol Bamboo Bouncer (RRP $289.95) is currently available in three stylish unisex colours: Spring (lime), Elephant (grey) and Coconut (cream). Which one is your favourite?

The Mocka Asta, a hip feeding chair on a budget

After setting up two nurseries before I was quite clear on what I wanted this time around. I had discovered in the past that some things are really not needed or just don’t work, while I missed other aspects that make the perfect nursery. One of the things I missed in my previous nurseries was a nice chair to sit down in with baby and maybe even use to breastfeed in every now and then.

Mocka Asta ArmchairI didn’t want a big fancy rocking chair but just a comfortable, good looking chair that I could still use after the baby stage and preferably one that wouldn’t break the bank. While ordering the cute Post Box storage unit for miss 2 from Mocka (read more about that here) I spotted the stylish Mocka Asta. The Mocka Asta is a modern armchair designed to be enjoyed by big people yet with a very little $79.95 price tag.

The Mocka Asta in action

The Mocka Asta in action

Mocka Asta RedNow this may not be a dedicated feeding chair but it is very well suited for it: It is a wide design, has arm rests for support and even has a gentle rock to it. The Mocka Asta comes in timeless black, red and cream and this last one fits in beautifully with our neutral nursery. I think it looks so peaceful and inviting and I love sitting down in it for a feed and quiet cuddle with the baby. I know we will enjoy this chair for a long time to come, it is going to be an ideal reading chair in the living room later on.

Mocka Kids ArmchairAt Mocka they understand that kids love to be ‘just like mummy or daddy’ so they have created a kids version of the Asta chair too. The Kids Armchair ($49.95) is available in black, blue and red and is designed for children aged 18 months – 6 years old (30kg). I think they would be perfect for a kids bedroom, playroom or of course lounge area and as these cool chairs don’t look childish at all they will blend in well with your own interior.

A real big bonus: You don’t have to worry about sticky hands and dirty fingers as the seat fabric of both the adult and kids armchair is machine washable.

With all the kids finally well and truly installed in their bedrooms (it has taken us a while but we got there!) it has become much easier to see what little bits and pieces we still need to finish their rooms and make them work for everyone. One of the things that I hadn’t been able to find so far was a nice storage unit to put next to the bunkbeds. We tried for a while to go without but we soon had enough of all the toys laying around so I continued my hunt and ended up at Mocka.

Mocka Storage Unit 4Mocka is an Australian family business that’s all about providing Australian families with designer furniture and toys without the designer price tag. Not only do they offer a large range of super hip kids products, there are some very stylish pieces for adults available too. From nursery to living room, from play room or bedroom, Mocka designs are really versatile and can be used anywhere and anytime. These Mocka Storage Cubes (2, 3, 4 or 6 cubes) are so popular and they even sell fabric boxes to fit!

Mocka Post Box 3Back to my hunt for a compact storage unit, which is how I ended up at Mocka in the first place. As soon as I spotted the funky Mocka Post Boxes I knew they would be perfect. The Post Boxes are available in lots of different colours and with 2, 3 or 4 compartments there is plenty of storage space for all your belongings. The little doors slide open easily so you can quickly tidy (read hide) any mess from visitors if needed.

Mocka Postbox

Mocka Post Box 2Because I know by now how often our kids change their mind on colours and bedroom configuration we went for a white Post Box 4, a safe option that fits in either of the bedrooms, suits boys and girls and has lots of room even for siblings sharing a room. I might even get one of the smaller Post Boxes too for next to the couch in the living room so I have somewhere to put my drink and store the remotes. Prices of the Mocka Post Boxes start at $69.95 with low shipping rates to match their affordable prices.

The Lelbys family is growing…

Not long ago I wrote about the new bean chair designs by Lelbys, a gorgeous Australian label that creates stunning homewares for stylish families. Many of you commented on how lovely the range looked and I know you are not the only ones, mums all over Australia have fallen in love with the Lelbys look. With the brand being so popular it comes as no surprise that owner and designer Lesley has already come up with the next addition to the range: meet the new Lelbys Bean Bags.

Just like its older siblings the brand new Lelbys Bean Bags are a stylish and practical addition to any kids bedroom or playroom. They make a comfortable, cosy seat for reading, doing homework or watching a movie and because of their light weight they are very easy to move. The great thing about these bean bags is that the seat style and look appeals to children and also gets the tick of approval from parents as the prints are not babyish or in-your-face but subtle and classy.

When filled the Lelbys Bean Bags are ca. 90cm in diameter which is a very decent size (as you know the trick with bean bags is not to fill them completely!), the age recommendation is ages 6 and up. But no matter what age, it is always better to be safe than sorry so each bag comes with a no-spill calico inner bag and the outer cover features a child-proof zip. Beans are great to sit on but a pain to pick up from the ground.

The current range offers 4 different designs: Pink Orchard, Red Orchard, Damask Pink and (my favourite) Bluebell Stripes and they are priced at $99.95 each. You can order your favourite design online or if you’d like to see the Lelbys Bean Bags with your own eyes you can visit a Lelbys stockist near you. There are more than 60 Lelbys retailers nationwide so there is sure to be store near you.

A few days ago my son (3.5 yo) asked me ‘where we got baby from’, a question I wasn’t really expecting just yet so I tried my best to talk around it. As I was telling him about the baby being in mummy’s belly and them visiting me in hospital when she was just born I realised how fast the past two years have gone. One moment I was bringing home this tiny little newborn who surprised us with her early arrival, the next moment she is a cheeky nearly two-year-old who is always busy discovering and exploring. I am not in a rush for her grow up, in fact I very much love her being our little baby but she clearly has a different opinion.

With two older siblings there are always new things to learn and copy and for the past few weeks she has been climbing her sister’s bed at every opportunity. As she mumbles ‘rest’ she installs herself under the blankets with her dolls and teddy and she won’t come out for anyone or anything. My heart melts when I see this chubby, curly haired little princess so happy and content in the big bed and I think she is nearly ready to have one of her own.

From my experiences with the other two I know that the move to a big bed can be pretty scary when you are only little: there are no sides, the bed is high off the ground and what about all that extra room around you? Because our little lady is still quite small we might start with a smaller toddler bed, like the Milo XT Toddler Bed ($198, walnut or white) which I spotted on the Big W website.

Milo XT Toddler Bed (Big W)

Unlike standard single beds toddler beds are lower to the ground (easier to get into and a softer landing) and little ones still get to enjoy the safe, familiar size of a cot. After all a happy baby means better sleep, which in return means happy parents so we are all winners here. Obviously a smaller bed also takes up less space and because you can still use your ordinary cot mattress and bed linen you don’t have to buy everything new at once. I particularly like that the Milo XT Toddler Bed features short safety rails on both sides saving you another expense.

To take a closer look at the Milo XT Toddler Bed, to browse the range of other nursery furniture and to check availability near you visit, home delivery is available too.
