Simple Steps to Starting Solids

Heinz Baby Basics

Brought to you by Nuffnang and Heinz Baby Basics

No matter how much I wish she would stay small forever, our beautiful little Harriet is growing up fast and she is definitely no longer a newborn. Now that she is almost 5 months old and weighs in at an impressive 7kg this gorgeous girl is starting to get very interested in all the ‘grown-up food’ she is missing out on, I think her first try of solids is just around the corner.

Heinz Baby

As cute as that ‘first bite’ photo will look on your wall, after four kids I know that starting solids also comes with a fair bit of work and a huge amount of mess. Here are a few tips and tricks to make this stage enjoyable for all:

Cook in bulk
Instead of preparing one tiny bowl of fresh food every day it is much more time efficient (and budget friendly) to cook larger quantities and store them in your freezer. If you freeze your baby’s meals in bite-size portions you can simply take out a single serve when needed; quick, easy and less wasted food.

Freezer Pod TrayThe practical Freezer Pot Tray holds six convenient 60ml pods, an ideal size for little tummies. Hungry baby? Simply pop out the frozen food to defrost your nutritious home-made meal or microwave the contents directly in the container, yay for less washing up! The tray keeps all your pods neatly organised while the individual pods are great for on-the-go too, the secure clip-on lid avoids messy spills in your nappy bag.

Tip: Use the coloured lids to ‘colour-code’ your meal stash, eg. green for vegetables, pink for fruit/dessert and blue for breastmilk.

Heinz Freezer Tray

Drip, drop, splash
Babies + Food = Mess, and lots of it. Whether you like it or not, as soon as you start solids you are in for a whole lot of gooey, sticky, slippery, crunchy, caked on mess. Thankfully there are a few things that could help limit the damage like a good absorbent bib, a non-spill cup, a splat mat under the table and of course this clever invention:

UnbelievabowlThe innovative Unbelievabowl Suction Bowl uses super strong suction to safely secure your baby’s bowl to the high chair or table. Not only will this keep the bowl from tipping over by accident, it also makes it much easier for baby to scoop out dinner without having to hold onto the bowl AND your cheeky eater can’t throw the bowl on the ground in protest. Now that’s what I call a sanity saver!

Heinz Suction Bowl

Make mealtime fun
You may have heard the saying ‘Food before one is just for fun’, for now it’s all about introducing your baby to different flavours and textures and basically letting them have fun with food. It is no secret that babies love bright colours and interesting shapes so make sure you bring those to the table too.

Heinz Baby SpoonsThese funky Weaning Spoons are available in a range of attractive colours and are sure to appeal to inquisitive babies. The easy-grip handle is specifically designed for small hands that are still learning and the Flexisoft tip is gentle on sensitive gums. As babies grow and gain independence they can start their self-feeding journey with the First Feeding Spoons, the feeding experts at Heinz have all stages covered.

You can find the Heinz Baby Basics range in the baby aisle at your local Coles or Woolworths supermarket.

Decor

There is no denying it, life with a family of six (soon seven) is BUSY. There is always something happening, books to be read, hair to be plaited, jokes to be shared, tears to be dried, chores to be done, meals to be cooked and much more. Most days I manage to stay sane (some I don’t!) thanks to my organised nature. I am a planner, someone who thinks ahead where possible and gets things sorted in advance to avoid chaos.

Decor 5-piece SetLike all mums I have many jobs and some I am better at than others, I’ll be honest and admit that cooking will never be my big talent but of course my hungry tribe still needs to be fed so it has to be done. Thankfully it is okay not to be good at everything and there are some wonderful mamas out there who generously share their gifts and ideas to keep you inspired like the lovely Katrina at The Organised Housewife.

Decor Fridge

Grab & Go, just the way I like it!

I often jump onto Katrina’s blog to discover new recipes and meal ideas and I particularly love her helpful Lunchbox Ideas section. Prepared with a big stack of Décor containers and inspired by The Organised Housewife I regularly fill up my freezer with delicious meals, lunchbox snacks for our kids, that way I never find myself empty handed! I love opening my fridge or freezer and seeing a stack of red containers full of yummy, homemade food waiting for us.

Decor Oblong 1

Easy left-overs for hubby’s lunch

The reusable Décor Microsafe range is ideal for storing meals in fridge or freezer and even defrosting, heating and steaming in the microwave thanks to the handy steam release vent. Doing all of this in one single container means no need to transfer food and create more dirty dishes, yay! The stackable containers are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes (perfect for family meals, single meals, cakes, soups and sauces) and you can use your fridge and freezer space as efficiently as possible.

Tellfresh Tag SetTo help you keep track of your stash you can label your meals with Tellfresh Tags that can be attached to the  side of each container. The Tellfresh Storer System Tag Set (RRP $3.49) comes with 12 waterproof tags, a little pencil and eraser (yep, they’re reusable) so you will never be guessing what exactly is inside and when you cooked it, that means there will be less wasted food. Décor Microsafe products are made right here in Australia and are free from BPA so they keep your food fresh AND safe.

NUK

It has been a bit of a wait but we’ve finally spotted a tooth! Even though she can’t do much biting yet baby Sybil happily chews and chomps on any food we put in front of her. From purees to mash and now soft lumps, it won’t be long until she can join in with the big kids at the dinner table. Dinner time is usually rather busy for our big family so I save myself some time by preparing the baby meals once a week and store them in the freezer:

Fruit and vegies in baby sized portions

Fruit and vegies in baby sized portions

Five months ago this was the first batch of baby food I made and since then the handy Annabel Karmel by NUK range has had quite the workout at our house. Child nutrition expert Annabel Karmel is known all around the world for her best-selling children’s cookbooks  and now she has teamed up with the clever team at NUK Australia to create an innovative range of BPA free baby equipment perfect for modern Aussie families.

NUk Freezer TrayWhen I prepare our baby food I usually fill up the Freezer Tray With Lid first. This food cube tray has enough room for nine 30ml portions, a great size for little ones just starting on solids. As your baby grows and starts eating bigger meals you can put together a mixed meal, eg. one cube of potato, one cube of carrot and one cube of fruit for dessert. The lid clips on tight and creates a flat surface, making it easy to stack in the freezer.

NUK CubesAt dinner time I just pop out one or more of the cubes (they come out easily) and warm it up ready to be eaten. The freezer tray is dishwasher safe so cleaning up is hassle free. For going out I use one of the six Stackable Cubes, each pack contains 2x 50ml, 2x 73ml and 2x 100ml containers. These colourful cubes are freezer, dishwasher and microwave safe, so when you are visiting friends of family you can just quickly warm your baby’s meal without needing a separate bowl (all you need is a spoon).

NUK Food Masher and BowlI generally make larger batches with my Beaba Babycook but even with a freezer full of baby meals there are times when you just want to make a fast, single meal or snack. The Food Masher and Bowl set is easy to use, fool proof (easy for dads, grandparents and babysitters) and you can use it anywhere and anytime. I often end up grabbing this to quickly mash up a serve of fresh fruit or to make our own ‘grown up’ meal baby friendly.

NUK Ice Lolly MouldsThe last product in the range is the Mini Ice Lolly Set, it looks absolutely adorable and it’s perfect for warm summer days (we have plenty of those here in Australia). I have only just started using this as baby has to be a little bit bigger (ca. 9 months+) to be able to hold the ice lollies. Fill the moulds with your child’s favouirte fresh fruit or yoghurt, pop in the freezer, and the next day you have healthy miniature ice blocks that are super tasty and great for sore gums.

Littlelock

It is hard to believe but three months have passed since we brought our littlest family member home from hospital (it feels like yesterday!) and before we know it she’ll be starting solids. Our other three children were early starters, taking their first bites at 4 months old, so I better read up on what the latest recommendations are. With four small children I may not have the time to cook fresh meals every single day so I am going to (try to) be organised and cook in bulk so there is always a homecooked meal or snack waiting in the freezer. Now preparing the meals is one thing, storing them is a whole different story:

LittlelockWhen you are looking at storage solutions for baby food there are a lot of factors to consider: Size (You don’t want to freeze huge containers as you will end up wasting uneaten food), safety (no harmful chemicals), durability (containers need to last as you will be using them over and over), practicality (easy to use and easy to stack) and of course containers need to be microwave safe (no need to transfer the food before heating it) and dishwasher proof (to save you hand washing everything).

Littlelock ContainersDesigned by a clever Aussie mama the new Littlelock containers tick all those boxes. Made from tempered glass (stronger than regular glass) they are both durable and eco friendly. They are safe from BPA, Phthalates, PVC and lead so you won’t be feeding baby something dangerous without knowing it. Unlike most other materials Littlelock glass is stain and odour resistant so you can start with a nice clean container every time.

Littlelock MealsFill the brightly coloured containers with your own homemade meals, close the clips and the airtight, leak proof seal will keep all the goodness and yummy aromas in so the food stays fresh. You will be amazed by how tight it ‘locks’, it’s obvious this is a very high quality product! Your baby gets the benefit of wholesome meals, you save money by not purchasing single serve jars and of course you can keep using Littlelock post-baby stage, think sauces, butter, jams, fruit and much more.

Littlelock Glass Food Storage Containers are available in two sizes: 120ml ($29.95 3-pack) and 210ml ($33.95 3-pack), a great size for growing tummies. Each pack contains 3 different colours so you can colour code your meals, eg. green for vegies, pink for fruit.
