In just a few short weeks this unusual school year will end, which means Hattie is getting ready to leave kindy and become a big school girl. It is going to be quite the change and there’s definitely a mix of nerves and excitement. Time to boost the morale by shopping for some cool new school gear and reading up to prepare. This gorgeous EK Books release tackles those ‘new school’ worries beautifully:

In Go Away, Worry Monster! (RRP $24.99) we meet Archie who experiences a night time visit from an unwanted guest, the Worry Monster… New classrooms, big buildings, tricky maths and a school full of strangers, the Worry Monster knows exactly what’s on Archie’s mind on the eve of a new school year. The more Archie worries, the bigger the monster gets. Archie’s heart is beating fast and his tummy is starting to feel a little queasy; if only the Worry Monster would go away!

After taking a deep breath Archie follows the simple tricks his mum taught him, tackling his worries one by one and replacing them with powerful facts. All of a sudden the monster doesn’t seem so big anymore. Now that all his worries have been squashed the Worry Monster has no choice but to leave. Well done, Archie!

Worry Monsters come in all shapes, sizes and colours, they keep you up at night and make you feel miserable. This sweet picture book takes the scary out of school and the negativity out of nerves, leaving kids feeling strong and empowered to banish their very own Worry Monster. It’s the perfect book for little school starters!

If there is one thing I have realised during our unexpected homeschooling this year, it’s that kids love learning as long the topic interests them. As we were thrown in the deep end we had to be creative with our methods, resources, time and expectations and looking back we did really well. We actually found lots of handy, interesting and useful books on our own bookshelf, like this cool science read by EK Books:

The ‘Scientists Who Changed the World’ book series makes science fun and relatable by introducing young readers to a bunch of famous scientists, sharing stories of their childhood, their discoveries and their impact on the world of today. What a fabulous way to raise little science enthusiasts!

In Scientists Who Changed the World: Rachel Carson we travel back in time to the early 1900’s to meet US scientist Rachel Carson and learn about the dangers of chemicals and their disastrous effects on nature. Did you know as a child Rachel excelled at recognising different bird songs and could identify the stars in the sky? She absolutely loved nature and her passion would lead her to become a biologist, writer and well known environmentalist.

We love how Scientists Who Changed the World combines the power of story telling with history and science, it is a winning combo. Reading how everyday children can grow up to make world-changing discoveries is exciting and inspiring and my children were intrigued by this story. We can’t wait to check out other titles in the series too.

You can find ‘Rachel Carson’ by Anita Croy in leading book stores across Australia.

Happy Father’s Day! Our six children are blessed with a wonderful, amazing, giving dad who loves nothing more than to spend time with them. He makes silly jokes and does funny dances, he plays games and drives them everywhere, he builds LEGO and watches dance shows and I can count on two hands the times he missed the bedtime routine. On this special day of celebration, here’s a sweet bedtime story with a twist from EK Books:

In Bedtime, Daddy! (RRP $24.99) the roles are reversed as we follow the adorable Little Bear who, at the end of a long day, sets off to put his big cuddly Daddy Bear to bed. As good parents know all too well, bedtime routines are tricky and you have do it exactly right…

All the elements of bedtime are there: The delaying, the messy tooth brushing, a story or two or three (but the extra ones a little rushed), the stalling, the strange questions, the mysterious monsters and unquenchable thirst, the open door, the sudden hunger and then that final stretch of waiting around the corner for the breathing to slow down.

This putting people to bed business is surprisingly exhausting! In his final moments of waiting Little Bear is getting pretty tired and his eyes are slowly closing… Thankfully parents tend to outlast their little ones (most days!) and there comes big, strong Daddy Bear to pick up Little Bear and tuck him in for the night.

With its cute illustrations, catchy lines and funny jokes Bedtime, Daddy! makes the perfect bedtime tale for young sleepyheads. Kids just love the familiarity of Daddy Bear’s bedtime antics and my tribe had a good giggle as they recognised their own delaying tactics on each page. What a blessing good dads are, on Father’s Day and every other day.

As we’re gearing up for a brand new term it is definitely a mix of nerves and excitement at our house. The older kids are super keen to go back to school, but the younger ones are not so sure. The teachers, the students, the building, the school work… it all can be quite scary and daunting! If your little student is feeling a tad nervous too here’s a lovely EK Books read to help them prepare for the big day:

When Edward starts Knight School he is counting on his protective armour to keep him safe from any upcoming trouble. Giants, ogres, dragons… when he enters his classroom he sees scary creatures everywhere! Edward decides that Knight School is just as scary as he had imagined and he is relieved he is wearing his armour to keep him safe in The Battle (RRP $24.99).

Thankfully a friendly ogre reaches out to him, showing Edward that there are no monsters at all. Slowly he realises that his armour is actually stopping him from having fun with his new class mates. Time to take off his protective gear and open up to all the fun school has to offer!

Young readers will love the sweet illustrations by Cara King and Ashling Kowk’s lovely message of battling school nerves and facing your fears will hit home to everyone. The Battle is a perfect gift idea for school starters and a win for the family book shelf.

We all have them, those days where you wake up in the morning and you instantly know it’s not going to be a good day. You may not even know exactly why but you just want to hide under the blankets and avoid the day all together. I think during these last few challenging months we may have had more of those days than ever! Kids have days like that too and it is important we help them to stay positive and empower them to beat the blues and find the silver lining in every day. This gorgeous read by EK Books does just that:

The moment Tabitha wakes up on the wrong side of the bed and spots a dreary, dripping raincloud hovering over her she realises she is about to have ‘one of those days’. A yucky, miserable day where everything goes wrong and nothing goes right. From breakfast to class, from playtime to lunch, wherever Tabitha goes the raincloud goes too and ruins her day…

No matter how hard Tabitha tries she can’t seem to shake this bothersome cloud, until she decides to stop escaping the splatter and to make the most of it instead. The wet drops make perfect puddles to splash in and bit by bit her day gets a little brighter. Tabitha and the Raincloud (RRP $24.99) is a fabulous book for everyone who has a yucky day every now and then.

Author Devon Sillett has teamed up with up-cycle artist Melissa Johns to deliver a delightful picture book that kids will love to read and look at. It promotes the important message of optimism and resilience through the sweetest recycled paper illustrations, it even inspired my girls to have a go at their own mix and match paper art too.

During these strange times of social distancing and home isolation it is more important than ever to teach children about kindness, community and caring for those who could use a smile. This sweet EK Books release by Australian author Vikki Conley has all the good stuff covered:

In Ella & Mrs Gooseberry (RRP $24.99) we meet the lovely Ella and her grumpy neighbour called, you guessed it, Mrs. Gooseberry. When Ella asks her mother why Mrs. Gooseberry is always sad and grumpy, mum says it is because she has lost love. But how do you lose love, and more importantly, how do you find it again?

Ella decides that to find something that is lost, you first need to know what it looks like, so she sets off to find out what love looks like. From her mum to her teacher, from her grandma to her dance instructor, everyone has different ways to describe love. Will Mrs. Gooseberry, with Ella’s help, be able to find love again? There may not be one straight answer to Ella’s question, but in this case it is packaged in a brown box…

Castles and crowns, glamour and gowns, tea parties and tiaras… if you thought the life of a princess is always easy, think again. Author Stephanie Ward and illustrator Shaney Hyde are welcoming you into the colourful world of Princess Arabella in this beautiful story published by EK Books:

Every year Princess Arabella, adored by her loving parents, is granted one special wish. She uses her royal wish for the most wonderful things, like pretty pink puppies and fluttery fairies. One thing she didn’t wish for, but she got it anyway, was a royal baby brother called prince Avery…

That year Arabella uses her annual wish to request a pencil with the amazing power to make anything she draws become reality. There is no limit to her art, her inventions are simply spectacular and it all comes together beautifully in her carefully designed garden party. Unfortunately Prince Avery turns out to be particularly good at disturbing Arabella’s perfect life and she decides something has to be done in Arabella and the Magic Pencil (RRP $24.99).

Featuring sweet watercolour art and magnificent words that have a royal ring to them this book is a joy to read and look at. Combining the power of magic with a wise lesson, Arabella and the Magic Pencil will help young readers to see the blessing a new sibling can bring.
