Little Bubba: Makeover Time

Of course Teddy is not the only sibling who refuses to sit still. My girls are always looking for a willing customer to attempt a pretty braid, do a fancy fishtail plait or try out a new look but it turns out that it’s a lot more fun to be the stylist than the bored customer who is not allowed to move or cries with every stroke of the brush. Keeping all of my budding hairdressers and make-up artists happy has turned out to be a breeze with this cute find from Little Bubba:

Measuring a generous 27cm tall this life-size My Big Sister ‘Styling Head’ (Ages 3+, 10,6″) is the ideal client for any hairdressing or beauty bar, she is always happy to receive a fresh makeover, doesn’t wiggle and never complains when things look a little wonky. With her long blonde hair, big blue eyes and perfect skin this lovely model is a clean canvas waiting for a dedicated artist to give her a brand new look, you can change her style as many times as you like!

To help you set up your own salon the Styling Head comes with a whole heap of beauty and hair accessories: 6 royal crown hair clips, a heart-shaped brush, a pink hair comb, four rollers for gorgeous curls, face stickers and a make-up palette with lip, cheek and eye make-up in different shades.  The set contains everything to get you started, just use your imagination.

Miss 11 is our resident hairdresser and miss 9 is our wannabe make-up artist, so together they have a ball getting this blonde model looking magazine worthy. In our house it is most definitely the older girls who adore this styling kit most, the younger girls like it too but the older two are a bit better at the delicate application of make-up and have patience for the step-by-step process of tricky hair styles. A quick rinse with a baby wipe removes all the makeup, there are no stains and it washes off easily from hands and clothing too.

One small note: While the box does list all the make-up ingredients on the bottom, it does clearly say ‘for external application on dolls only’ so I am not sure how suitable it is for human skin. I have specifically instructed my girls not to apply it to their own skin but I can imagine some children will be keen to give themselves a makeover which may cause an allergic reaction.

VTech

Well, the kids have just finished their first full week at the new school and everyone seems to be settling in just fine. There are still some tears from miss Sybbie in the morning (just like at the old school) but five minutes later she is happy and smiling and she is showing some great improvement in her reading and writing already, she is even keen to try more at home. She’s been having lots of fun testing her new writing skills on Hattie’s new easel from the clever toy makers at VTech:

The 3-in-1 VTech DigiArt Creative Easel (RRP $89.95, whiteboard, blackboard and drawing table) is a fabulous interactive design that comes jam-packed with awesome features. There are many different ways to use and enjoy the DigiArt Easel, keeping it fun and interesting for young children as they grow, learn and develop.

At almost 3 Harriet is only just hitting the right age for the DigiArt Creative Easel (ages 3-6) but that is not stopping her from trying out all there is to do and learn. Using the attached magic pen little learners can follow the lights on the light-up white board to learn how to write letters, numbers and more all by themselves. Hattie is pretty pleased with her efforts and loves showing off her work, maybe she’s a school teacher in the making?… With more than 150 numbers, letters, objects and shapes to write and draw there is no shortage of design ideas!

Using the brightly coloured buttons underneath the board children can swap and change between different modes of play (Eg. learn to draw, a guessing game or free drawing), adjust brightness and sound, play 10 classic songs or listen to each letter of the alphabet. But there is more: when you turn around the white board a cool blackboard is revealed, get ready to put your new writing/drawing skills into action with chalk!

The easel features a handy clip-storage spot for the magic pen (which is attached with string so it won’t get lost) and plenty of storage for a bunch of coloured white board markers or a pack of chalk. Three pieces of chalk are included, white board markers are widely available and can be purchased/replaced as needed. Hip Tip: If you are planning to wrap this one up for Christmas you may want to tuck in some extra markers too.

I especially love that in just a minute or two the DigiArt Creative Easel can be transformed into a fantastic drawing table at perfect kids’ height. It allows your little artist to use the Easel like a proper desk and the drawing surface can also be shared by siblings or friends who can sit around the table together and create to their heart’s content. The only downside is that there is only one magic pen but of course you can always use multiple white board markers or clip on a big sheet of ordinary drawing paper.

The DigiArt Creative Easel is available in green and pink, which colour would your little artist like most?

VTech toys are available at major department stores, select online stores and independent toy retailers across Australia.

Bye bye nursery, hello toddler room

With the arrival of baby no.6 around the corner we are currently in a mad rush to finish our bedroom puzzle, something we always seem to leave until the very last minute! While we agreed that Harriet would have to vacate the nursery for the new arrival, at not even 2 years old (and still very much our ‘baby’) we also felt she wasn’t quite ready to move into a shared room with one of her older sisters. Our solution: A lovely toddler room fit for our little treasure…

As soon as I saw this dreamy StarBright Toddler Bed (Ages 18 months – 5 years) I knew it would fit our needs perfectly, it ticks every single one of our boxes! Designed for small legs the bed sits close to the ground, this makes getting in and out a breeze and will help your growing toddler feel safe, confident and grown-up. Harriet loves climbing in by herself and testing out her new bed (complete with fake snoring sounds), nap time or not!

Because safety is important to us I really appreciate the protective side panels that will keep little sleepyheads from accidentally tumbling out of bed as they sleep. Manufactured by Worlds Apart this easy-to-assemble bed is made with sturdy, high quality MDF and features a slat base, ensuring a durable and solid construction that is tested to the most stringent safety standards. The cute attached bedside table is even strong enough to double as a parent seat for that last bedtime story, how convenient is that?

Another delightful child-friendly feature of this sweet bed is the built-in night light that helps busy bees drift off to sleep peacefully and will turn off after 15 minutes. The moon-shaped light spreads a calming glow over the bed and projects a starry night sky onto the wall at the same time, it’s like sleeping in space! Unlike with separate night lights there are no dangerous loose cords or cables and it can not fall on the ground when little hands reach for it in the middle of the night.

The gender neutral colour scheme makes the StarBright bed a great choice for boys and girls, it easily fits in with any decor and you can simply dress it up with your favourite linen and wall decor to suit your taste. As I have a soft spot for cool, calming blue I made the bed with a crisp Starlight Blue Striped Fitted Sheet and the matching Pinwheel Quilted Comforter by CoCaLo. Although this bed looks and feels like a ‘big’ bed, thanks to the 140x70cm mattress size you can continue to use your normal cot bed linen which is great news for the family budget.

We have purposely kept Hattie’s room simple but fun with the addition of two pieces from the Worlds Apart BearHug range. To help keep the room organised and to encourage Hattie to tidy up after play we decided on the BearHug Stack Storage, a clever and compact storage unit that holds all her toys and teddies. When in use the three cubes can be separated so she can access all her treasures, and when packed away the unit’s small footprint leaves the room spacious and clean.

Inspired by her older siblings Hattie loves to get crafty which can cause a bit of trouble when she gets her hands on special markers, glitter paint, important paperwork and glue or when she climbs upon our high dining chairs to sit at the big table. This child-proof BearHug Desk solves all our trouble, she can sit at a perfect toddler height, the seat doesn’t wobble or fall over and she has access to her own crayons and paper. I just love this little art desk, I can already tell it will be one of her favourite spots in the house.

To add a pop of colour and brighten the plain walls Hattie and I added a generous sprinkle of the Multi Glitter Confetti Dots, it is like the colours were made to match the BearHug range. I loved how well the removable RoomMates wall decals came up in our girls’ room a few months ago and how easy they were to apply, so it was an obvious choice for Harriet’s toddler room. With 180 stickers per pack there was plenty of glitter to go around, our older girls instantly claimed the left-over dots for their room.

Harriet’s new room has turned into a pretty, playful and peaceful place which we think she will love and hopefully having her own special sanctuary will help make the transition easy and fun during this tricky time of becoming an older sister.

It feels like we only just completed the last bedroom makeover and now we’re about to start all over again! With baby no.6 due in September we’ve had to rework our floorpan, rethink who sleeps where (and with whom) and of course create a brand-new nursery for our new arrival, so much to do and not enough time… Luckily everyone is excited about the upcoming bedroom shuffle and about getting a new bedroom buddy.

Once the renovations are complete miss 4 is moving up the hall into a girls bedroom together with miss 6 and they both can’t wait. We’ve picked out some gorgeous linen for their beds, some cosy pillows for reading and relaxing and we added a fresh sprinkling of love with these little pretties by RoomMates:

What better way to transform a plain wall into a girly delight than with a generous supply of love hearts? With a huge 180 individual decals Watercolor Heart Wall Decals in a range of pink shades there was certainly no shortage of love (to be honest we only used half, leaving plenty for the other girls room!). And guess what? Not only can you brighten up your walls with these beauties, you can also use them to revamp other flat surfaces like your furniture, windows and more.

Applying a RoomMates wall decal is as simple as peel, position and stick, if I can do it anyone can do it! It is quick, easy and non-permanent making RoomMates ideal for people who are renting or just want a stylish decor that can be reversed when people move house, swap bedrooms or change their style. If you want to update your decor the stickers can easily be removed without damaging your walls and you can reuse them in a different location, offering affordable design fun over and over again.

Another personal plus is that, unlike when you paint walls, RoomMates won’t leave you with strong paint fumes that can unsettle children or oversensitive pregnant mamas like myself. I really enjoyed our first RoomMates experience so I can’t wait to pick the perfect RoomMate for our baby’s nursery. There are so many different designs to choose from to suit any bedroom, playroom or living room but I am leaning towards this Modern Giant Tree or the Neutral Confetti Dots, what do you think?

BBox Colour Pallet Concepts 8-14 (RGB)

Welcome Baby Giveaway – Day 22

Over the course of 8 years and five kids I have bought more than my fair share of baby goods, some were fantastic buys and others (in hindsight) a total waste of money. One thing I would buy all over again in a heartbeat is this fantastic b.box gem, for the past few years we’ve used ours daily and I still love it as much as I did on day one. If you want to see for yourself what I’m raving about make sure to join today’s Christmas Countdown giveaway:

b.box range

Designed right here in Australia by two clever mamas the award-winning b.box product range is fun, functional and fashionable, all rolled into one. Their innovative designs are all about making your life that little bit easier while adding a touch of style.

On one side the fabulous b.box Diaper Caddy (RRP $69.95) holds a huge stack of nappies and the other side is designed to neatly fit a big tub of baby wipes. Underneath a spacious slide-out drawer keeps your favourite nappy creams and lotions together so you have all your nappy change essentials within reach, every single time. The caddy even comes with a matching, fold-up, wipe-clean change mat, so handy!

While we do have a lovely change table in our baby’s nursery the reality is that I generally can’t be bothered to walk all the way to other end of the house (and leave the other kids by themselves). Our b.box Diaper Caddy has been living in our lounge room for several years where it has been my trusty change companion. The sturdy design is durable, strong and easy to keep clean, if it survives life in our big, busy family you can rest assured the quality is fantastic.

Play-Doh

Happy World Play-Doh Day!

Can you believe it has been 60 years since the world first discovered ‘imagination in a can’? Today Play-Doh is available in over 80 countries across the globe with more than 3 billion cans of Play-Doh compound sold worldwide (of which 17 live at our house at the moment). Here at Hip Little One HQ we are huge Play-Doh fans, we love getting out our collection of yellow cans and letting our imagination run wild.

Play-Doh CakePlay-Doh is a fantastic tool to encourage children to use their creativity, practise their fine motor skills and develop a keen eye for colour and design. From a value-for-money point of view it’s a great choice too, as unlike many other art and craft supplies you can reuse the compound over and over again. Just make sure you store your Play-Doh properly and airtight and it will stay soft and fresh for ages.

Play-Doh cansThe awesome thing about Play-Doh is that it appeals to people of all ages and there are no rules when it comes to making and creating (except maybe no mixing the colours…, I’m a ‘a-colour-a-can’ kind of mum), the sky is the limit! From our 3-year old all the way to our 8-year olds and even mum and dad, everyone gets excited when I clear the kitchen table for a couple of hours of Play-Doh fun.

The kids and I celebrated Play-Doh’s 60th Birthday in style by creating a colourful party buffet that looked good enough to eat. Delicious cakes and yummy lollies, scrumptious ice cream and pretty biscuits, we even put together a miniature fruit platter as a healthy treat. It was really nice to see the kids concentrate so hard on the small details and come up with unique designs using the tools that we have, I am thinking we may have some future patisserie chefs on our hands!

Play-Doh Party

Come join the party at facebook.com/playdoh and celebrate this special milestone by sharing your own Play-Doh memories and creations using the #PLAYDOH60 hashtag.
