Pan Macmillan Australia

While everyone has their eye on school holidays, Easter and ANZAC Day it is easy to forget about Mother’s Day, which is rapidly creeping up on us. With only four weeks to go it’s time to start shopping, dropping hints for and/or creating the perfect gift for the special mum in your life or even just yourself! Personally I find nothing warms the heart like a handmade treasure and this is one unique gift that is guaranteed to make any mother melt:

Whether you have a mum, mama, mother or ma, a grandma, nan, oma or nonna, I Love My Mum Because (RRP $14.99) is the cutest keepsake book for all those special ladies. Go grab your crayons, pencils and markers and get started…

‘I Love My Mum Because’ invites little artists to become little authors, using their creative skills to tell the world why they love their mother. Across 31 pages children are encouraged to celebrate mum in ‘activity book’ style with colouring in pages (draw a picture of you and mum, decorate flowers for your mum, trace your hand, show your feelings in colours), little puzzles (spot the mum, match the mother-baby shapes) and of course write sweet notes to/about your mum (write a wish for your mum, describe your mum). The end result is a sweet gathering of personal love notes for mothers and no two books will ever be the same, just like mothers are all different too.

Thanks to the sturdy hardcover this precious book is sure to stand the test of time and will still be treasured by mums years from now. I think it makes a perfect Mother’s Day gift or birthday present: a joy to make and a joy to receive. Hip tip: If you’re a little softie like I am, keep a tissue box on hand when you read because you’ll need it!

Happy World Play-Doh Day!

Can you believe it has been 60 years since the world first discovered ‘imagination in a can’? Today Play-Doh is available in over 80 countries across the globe with more than 3 billion cans of Play-Doh compound sold worldwide (of which 17 live at our house at the moment). Here at Hip Little One HQ we are huge Play-Doh fans, we love getting out our collection of yellow cans and letting our imagination run wild.

Play-Doh CakePlay-Doh is a fantastic tool to encourage children to use their creativity, practise their fine motor skills and develop a keen eye for colour and design. From a value-for-money point of view it’s a great choice too, as unlike many other art and craft supplies you can reuse the compound over and over again. Just make sure you store your Play-Doh properly and airtight and it will stay soft and fresh for ages.

Play-Doh cansThe awesome thing about Play-Doh is that it appeals to people of all ages and there are no rules when it comes to making and creating (except maybe no mixing the colours…, I’m a ‘a-colour-a-can’ kind of mum), the sky is the limit! From our 3-year old all the way to our 8-year olds and even mum and dad, everyone gets excited when I clear the kitchen table for a couple of hours of Play-Doh fun.

The kids and I celebrated Play-Doh’s 60th Birthday in style by creating a colourful party buffet that looked good enough to eat. Delicious cakes and yummy lollies, scrumptious ice cream and pretty biscuits, we even put together a miniature fruit platter as a healthy treat. It was really nice to see the kids concentrate so hard on the small details and come up with unique designs using the tools that we have, I am thinking we may have some future patisserie chefs on our hands!

Play-Doh Party

Come join the party at facebook.com/playdoh and celebrate this special milestone by sharing your own Play-Doh memories and creations using the #PLAYDOH60 hashtag.

Stitches and Craft

Often people ask me what I would do with my time if I didn’t have a big family of seven to look after. The answer is not really that difficult: I would be a full-blown craftaholic. There are so many wonderful crafts I would love to master and I can spend hours browsing Spotlight, filling up my trolley with beautiful materials that I have no clue how to use.

Stitches and Craft Flower Crochet

Whether you are a craft professional or a keen novice like me, if you are looking for a lovely day out you are sure to enjoy a visit to The Stitches and Craft Show. Of course there is also the opportunity to stock up on fabulous gear for your hobby stash (you better bring a large shopping bag) and to meet some amazing artists and watch them show off their talents.

Can’t find a babysitter? Don’t worry, the kids are welcome in the special Kids Corner where they can shake paws with Crafty Cat and try their hand at some colouring in.

One of the comments that keeps coming up during our parent-teacher interviews is that our children are very creative, they just love ‘making’ things and come up with the most interesting designs. It is so much fun to see their little brains work and watch their hands turn their plans into something unique and amazing. Construction toys are therefore a big favourite in our house and as soon I spotted Geomag I knew the kids would enjoy the challenge:

Geomag is a Swiss designed construction toy range that uses the timeless fun of magnets to open a whole new world of building opportunities. The range is suitable for ages 3+ and consists of lots of different designs, shapes, colours (yes, even pink and glitter!) and accessories that are sure to appeal to creative minds of all ages.

Geomag PanelsWe started our Geomag journey with Geomag Panels, a collection that combines the magnetic fun of Geomag Classic with brightly coloured panels in basic shapes. To help you on your way the back of box shows a selection of projects you can make with the contents of that box, but obviously the sky is the limit and you can use your imagination to build your very own creations too.

With the school holidays around the corner Geomag will be a fabulous boredom buster and of course you can use and reuse the pieces over and over again or combine different sets. Our 7-year old twins have recently been exploring the world of geometry at school and how much more exciting than seeing shapes on boring paper is bringing them to life by building them yourself!

Geomag Panels Diamond

This is a fabulous example of why Geomag is not just a toy, it’s an excellent educational tool too and a great exercise for fine motor skills. The Geomag ‘Magic Rocker’ is one of those quick, simple but fun projects that teaches kids the basic of magnetism, our 5-year old thought it was amazing and wanted to build it over and over again.

Geomag Panels House

Geomag Panels are available in five different sets and prices start at a very affordable RRP $20.

Bloom Pops

What can I say, we’re four days into these school holidays and we’ve already seen more rain than during the whole month of June! Luckily we’ve got a lovely fireplace to keep us snuggly warm indoors and I stocked up on a whole range of awesome boredom busters so (so far) we’re keeping very busy and happy here at Hip Little One HQ. This awesome new range from the craft experts at Colorific was a massive hit with my two oldest daughters:

Clear off the table and watch your budding designers work their magic with Bloom Pops (ages 5-12). Think art and craft, glitter and gems, felt and fragrance, flowers and charms and you can see why this fabulous new collection of craft kits is so popular with young girls.

Colorific Bloom Pops

Bloom Pops fun is an easy 3-step ‘Pick, Stack and Pop’ concept that kids will get the hang of very quickly, after showing my girls (4 and 6 yo) once they did it independently without any trouble and I enjoyed 1,5 hour of peace and quiet, bonus! Pick your favourite felt shapes, colours and patterns, stack them up and decorate to your taste, then pop them together with the special Bloom Pop maker, easy as pie.

Bloom Pops BouquetThere are currently 9 different Bloom Pops packs available to create a range of exciting products eg. jewellery, hair accessories, a purse or even a flower bouquet. Unlike many craft kits on the market that are one-use-only Bloom Pops can be re-used over and over and you can change your designs as often as you like, this makes Bloom Pops excellent value for money. Simply ‘unpop’ and start again!

Bloom Pops packs are priced between RRP $14.99-$34.99 and are packed in large, attractive boxes so if you are looking for a great, affordable birthday gift that is sure to impress the birthday girl look no further.
