It's About Us

A few weeks ago I told you about the heartbreaking movie Miss You Already, in which Toni Collette and Drew Barrymore portray two best friends who are dealt a devastating cancer diagnosis. I shed quite a few tears while watching, being a mother myself it is one of my greatest fears to have to leave behind my family and for my children to grow up without a mother.

Sadly there are many beautiful families who faces this reality and who are forced to prepare their children for the difficult time ahead. The wonderful team behind it’s about us understands how hard this is so they have put their hands and hearts together to help cancer sufferers and their families bundle their memories and leave a legacy for those left behind.

It’s about us has developed a digital scrapbook that can be customised and personalised into something that is relevant and meaningful to you and your loved ones. Providing inspiration through simple, personalised template style pages will allow you to capture your most special memories, emotions, quotes, stories and feelings through text and photos within a supported framework.

MomentoCreating your unique scrapbook is easy thanks to the handy, step-by-step software from Momento Photo Books, who have generously supported this great initiative by offering a 50% discount on all it’s about us books. There is also the opportunity to purchase a Momento Photo Books gift voucher, allowing the recipient to put together a precious keepsake that will be treasured for life. What a thoughtful gift during such a difficult time!

Everywhere around us cancer is impacting lives, relationships, marriages and friendships and everyone deals with this in a different way, a message that becomes all too clear in Miss You Already:

In Miss You Already childhood friends Jess (Drew Barrymore) and Milly (Toni Collette) are busy living London life when Milly’s breast cancer diagnosis turns their world upside down. After the initial shock has faded Milly is determined to win the battle and Jess is at her side through it all, she even puts her own fertility plans on hold to support her best friend in this tough fight.

Miss You Already

From chemo and hospital stays to losing hair and picking wigs, Jess is there to help Milly and her family as much as she can. Cancer not only invades Milly’s body, it invades her marriage to Kit and her friendship with Jess too and slowly things start falling apart. When Milly eventually receives the devastating news that there is no more hope she wants to repair the broken relationships before it is too late.

Bloggers BBQ

On Friday night we packed our family in the car and drove to Melbourne to attend another fabulous Kids Business get-together, this time in the shape of a fun and family friendly Bloggers BBQ at Albert Park. For our children this was very exciting as I generally ‘work’ from home so they don’t often get the opportunity to see what I really do and who I work with.

Camp QualityKids Business Communications hosts the Bloggers BrunchTM and Bloggers BBQTM series of events where bloggers and brands meet and mingle, for more information about Kids Business visit www.kidsbusiness.com.au. Not only are these fantastic events fun for all attendees, they also raise much needed awareness and funds for different charities and this time the spotlight was on a very worthy cause called Camp Quality.

Camp Quality is a nationwide initiative that’s all about supporting Australian children (and their families) who suffer from cancer. From the moment of diagnosis, all throughout the treatment and (hopefully) remission, Camp Quality is there to offer education, recreation, respite and play to build optimism, resilience and supportive networks for families.

Camp Quality Mission

Using specially developed family support programs, education programs, hospital programs and educational programs Camp Quality aims to create a better life for every child living with cancer in Australia. All Camp Quality programs are 100% free of charge and everyone with a child under 13 years older who is diagnosed with cancer can join, there are lots of Camp Quality locations across Australia with great events being organised throughout the year.

At the Kids Business Bloggers BBQ Camp Quality was presented with a generous $500 donation, a great gesture for a wonderful charity.

To find out more Camp Quality, to see how you can help make a difference or to make a donation visit www.campquality.org.au.

Bloggers Brunch

As you may have read in last week’s newsletter I swapped cold and rainy Adelaide for a few days in (just as chilly) Melbourne where I attended a special Kids Business Bloggers Brunch. Over the past few years I have made it to a few of these lovely get-togethers, the event is always jam packed (in the past I have missed out on tickets, there are so many keen bloggers who want to go) and Kids Business does an fabulous job putting together a fun, inspiring meeting that leaves bloggers feeling excited, energised and inspired.

Look Good... Feel BetterNot only is the Bloggers Brunch an excellent opportunity to meet other bloggers and discover new brands and products (and enjoy a few hours away from the kids), it is also a great way to hear from inspirational speakers and find out more about amazing charities and organisations that serve Australian people (and how you can do your share to help). Last Friday the spotlight was on Look Good… Feel Better, a charity that makes a difference to many Australians year after year.

Every year an increasing number of Australians are diagnosed with cancer and often as their world crumbles and falls so does their confidence. Look Good… Feel Better is a cosmetic industry community initiative helping cancer patients, born from a passion to revive the well being and confidence of cancer patients by providing free information, tips and workshops to make them look good and feel better. More than 1,700 trained and certified cosmetic, beauty and hairdressing professionals volunteer their time and expertise to make these workshops a success.

LGFB

Workshops are being held at over 180 venues all over Australia and each of the 10,000 yearly participants is presented with a Confidence Kit full of helpful information and free product to continue their journey at home. It is wonderful to see so many volunteers come together and work alongside each other and the neutral brand/product approach completely removes the feeling of consumerism and competitorship; Look Good… Feel Better is all about the people, not the brands.

If you would like to get involved with Look Good… Feel Better as a volunteer or want to make a donation visit www.lgfb.org.au.

Auction for Micah

Some days the twins are really naughty, like all 3-year olds can be naughty, some days the baby cries a lot and hangs on my leg, expecting to be held all the time. Some nights the twins call me into their rooms again and again, for no good reason and I wish they would stop asking for me and just go to sleep. I know that most mums will recognise this and it is okay to feel that way sometimes, but next time your kids behave less than ideal think about this beautiful boy called Micah.

Micah is 3 years old and lives in Adelaide, he has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer and his earthly future is unknown. As I have two 3-year olds myself his story has really touched me and made me realise once again how incredibly blessed I am with healthy children, even if they are naughty sometimes. Micah requires high-level chemo therapy which means a compromised immune system and Micah’s family needs a good quality vacuum cleaner to help maintain a healthy, bug-free environment.

The amazing people at Spartan Electrical have offered to provide a top-of-the-line Dyson at cost price and to raise these costs ($700) the lovely Rachel from Owl Baby has organised Auction for Micah. Lots of generous companies have donated fantastic prizes to Auction for Micah, all you need to do is be generous too whilst bidding. You could buy some fantastic products (and even services) and all the money raised will go directly to a brand new vauum cleaner for Micah’s family. Every little bit helps and there are many different products available for budgets big or small.

Auction for Micah runs on Facebook until Wednesday October 12th 2011. At the moment the auction includes 90 items, you can check them all out here. Please be generous, trust you are making a difference to Micah and his family and please hug your little ones extra tight today.
