The Power of Flour

After a busy week of stressing, rushing and running around we were all in desperate need of some quiet time at home, so we cancelled our Sunday plans and instead we pottered in the garden, played games and got the kitchen dirty by cooking up a storm. I love trying something different and Rowie Dillon’s new cookbook is definitely full of refreshing ideas:

If you thought gluten-free meant boring and plain you’re in for a big surprise with The Power of Flour (RRP $35), a wonderful cookbook exploring a range of different flour types. From delicious desserts and yummy treats to hearty dinners, Rowie shows how to make a gluten, wheat and yeast free diet exciting and fun. Filled with more than 150 pages of recipes there is a wonderful dish for everyone.

As a mother of several children with food allergies I know how overwhelming it can be, and it is easy to feel limited in your options. The Power of Flour is a wonderful way to discover flours that you may not have heard of before, it teaches you about popular flours like quinoa, amaranth and polenta but also introduces you to less common alternatives like potato flour, teff flour, sorghum flour and lupin flour.

On Sunday morning we tried Rowie’s Porridge with Apple, Coconut, Goji and Blueberries, a wonderful, warming breakfast that went down a treat with all five kids. I have no doubt this will become a weekend-favourite for us, it takes a bit of time to cook the quinoa but the wonderful mix of flavours is totally worth it.

For lunch we grabbed our star-shaped muffin tray and whipped up a big puffy batch of Brazilian Cheese Breads with tapioca flour and parmesan cheese. They were so simple to make and turned out really light and fluffy, they would be an ideal side dish at a BBQ and we had enough left to pack some in the lunchboxes the next day too, bonus.

Last but not least we finished our day of down-time on a high note with the World’s Best Carrot Cake. With beautiful ingredients like freshly grated carrot, rice flour, walnut and coconut you can almost trick yourself into thinking this is a healthy treat, until you sink your teeth into the sticky and scrumptious cream cheese icing… This would make the perfect gluten-free party cake for your next celebration.

Disney Party, Celebrate magical moments

Jul 212014

As most of you will know in just a few short days we will leave for a long awaited 5-week holiday in my home country The Netherlands. When we planned our trip we purposely picked August, first of all because of the nice summer weather but also because it means we can celebrate four birthdays there with my family (a unique occasion as they have never attended any of the children’s birthdays before). Very exciting and special for us but not that nice for our friends and family in Australia who sadly miss out on the birthday fun this year.

Disney Party

To soften the blow we enjoyed an early mini-birthday party two weeks ago which got me all in the mood for party planning. A little birdie must have told Disney about our quadruple birthday month because they surprised us with a fabulous parcel full of party goodies to make our kids’ birthdays extra special. If you want to add a touch of Disney magic to your next celebration you are sure to love Disney Party, Celebrate magical moments.

Disney Kids' Party Cakes

The soon to be released Disney Kids Party Cakes Book features 19 popular Disney movies and characters like Mickey Mouse, Cars, Bambi, Cinderella, Dumbo, Frozen and many more, there is something for everyone. Containing 58 recipes for cakes, cookies, cupcakes and cake pops it makes a fabulous addition to your bookshelf, you’ll never be stuck for party ideas again!

Disney Toy Story Cupcakes

My personal favourites are Alice in Wonderland (the Mad Hatter and Card biscuits look amazing), Finding Nemo (the Pearl octopus cake pops are adorable) and Doc McStuffins (miss 3 is crazy about Doc McStuffins and she is sure to love the cute edible bandaids), I can’t wait try them out when we come back from our holiday.

Disney Printables

To finish your party in style there will be an extensive range of Disney Printables available; bunting, banners, invitations and decorations, Disney has your next party covered. If you’ve always admired the crafty mums on Pinterest, the talented cooks on Instagram and the magazine worthy party pictures on Facebook but didn’t know where to start you can count on Disney to help you pull off the ultimate Disney party.

I don’t know about you but I have been so busy with the school holidays, Easter celebrations, Anzac Day and the start of Term 2 tomorrow that I have lost track of time. Mother’s Day is only 14 days away so if you don’t want to find yourself empty handed on the big day now is the time to start dropping some hints for the hubby and kids.

TCS RaffleDon’t worry about drawing circles in shopping catalogues and leaving them around the house, go the modern way and use the handy (and free!) online Hint Hint service. Whether it’s a relaxing massage, a gorgeous piece of jewellery or a beautiful bouquet of flowers you’re lusting after The Cheesecake Shop is is on the mission to help mums all over Australia receive the Mother’s Day gift of their dreams.

Chocolate Mud Cake (Square Lightbox Shot)All it takes is a few clicks and a cheeky hint is on it’s way to your partner, kids, family member or friend’s inbox. Bonus: As they’re coming to spend Mother’s Day with you anyway they may as well bring your favourite The Cheesecake Shop cake for everyone to share. When sending your hint you can indicate which cake really makes your mouth water, that way you can be sure they’ll bring your number one choice .

If you’re responsible for getting your own cake (as unfair as that is!) you can also opt to receive a gentle nudge to pick up your cake in the week before Mother’s Day. They say that calories don’t count on Mother’s Day and that sounds totally plausible to me, what do you think?

Orange Leaf Photography

Last week Tuesday we finished Sybbie’s first birthday celebrations in style with a sugar sweet, and very sticky, cake smash photo shoot. Because our little lady can be a little unsure about new people and strange environments I opted to have the photographers from Orange Leaf Photography come to our house, very convenient and less stressful for little ones.

Three girls

The Cake Smash concept is very simple: mum makes a big, soft, squishy, creamy cake and the photographer(s) catches the moment your little one attacks the cake, capturing a series of delightful photos to treasure forever.

Cake Smash

Because our Sybil is allergic to cows milk I had to use a dairy free cake recipe, something I hadn’t done before. One of my lovely readers helped me out and pointed me in the direction of this basic Dairy-Free and Egg-Free Vanilla Cake Recipe from Milk Allergy Mom.

It was the first time I used my new sunshine yellow kMix Kitchen Machine which definitely made the whole process a lot easier, the cake turned out soft, moist and breakable and I was surprised by how nice it tasted. I prepared the icing using a pre-made creme shortening from our local cake and bake store, it was so fluffy and there was so much of it, a bit too much sugar for my liking but it was absolutely perfect for the occasion.

Of course no matter how awesome the cake, the most important factor of a successful Cake Smash is the mini model and with a little character like our Syb you never know what to expect…

First touch

Luckily photographers Amy and Nadine were really warm and friendly and obviously very experienced with young children so it didn’t take too long for Sybil to settle in. Even though they brought their own backdrop, flooring and lighting it was still very homey and it definitely made for really gorgeous photos.

When we brought out the cake we had her undivided attention, she totally went for it and if we hadn’t taken away the cake she would probably still be eating today!

I think the photos did exactly what I had hoped, capture Sybil’s personality beautifully. She has so many different expressions and every photo is different. The ones in this post are just some of my favourites, now the tricky job of selecting a few to have printed and framed.

Caribbean dream, treasure cake, lemon meringue, caramel mudcake, mississippi baked cheesecake, eclairs, profiteroles, I don’t know about you but I am starting to feel a little (or a lot!) hungry at the sound of all these delights. I have been extremely good these past few months but I think come Christmas I have earned a bit of a naughty treat.

Naughty or NiceThe cake makers at The Cheesecake Shop would love to know if you’ve been naughty or nice this year and have put together a super quick survey to find out. How helpful have you been, to your friends but also to strangers? Are you a great sharer or do you always put yourself in first spot? What about speaking the truth, or do you sneak in a little white lie every now and then? It’s almost end of the year so it’s time to make up the balance.

Chocolate Mud Cake (Square Lightbox Shot)Just pop over to The Cheesecake Shop Facebook page, answer ten simple (slightly cheeky) multiple choice questions and you will be rewarded with a $5 gift voucher to use at your next visit to The Cheesecake Shop, that’s pretty nice if you ask me (and at the same time a bit naughty too)! For a bit of extra competition they’re also comparing us Aussies with our neighbours from across the water, who do you think has been the naughtiest??
