When you have a large family like ours Christmas is quite the big party, so many laughs and giggles, so much food, loads of presents and happy faces all around. Of course it can be a bit tricky to find suitable gifts for the little ones as they already have everything but you can never go wrong with books. These two sturdy Alphaprints board books were a big hit with miss 2:

Grumpy pug, tiny chihuahua, scruffy terrier, little dachshund… which type of dog is your favourite? In Happy Dog (RRP $12.99) young readers can meet all kinds of friendly dogs, discover what makes each dog special and even touch their bodies to experience different textures. Miss 2 really enjoys the way the text rhymes and she loves patting the soft belly of the golden retriever and the long hair of the colourful Afghan hound.

If dogs are not your thing and you prefer a feathered friend you are sure to find one in Quirky Bird (RRP $12.99). There is so much to love about this delightful bird book: Aside from the rhyming text and the introduction to interesting bird species it is filled with bright colours, interesting textures and materials and there are every day objects to spot in each page. Who would have thought a sunflower could be turned into a duckling, spades make perfect pelican feet and a trumpet resembles a hummingbird’s beak?

Priced at just $12.99 each these board books are a brilliant affordable gift idea for curious toddlers, they’re an ideal boredom buster for holiday car trips too. With so many different ways to read and learn the kids will reach for these books over and over again.

Remember how I raved about the fabulous Busy Books series from Campbell Books a few weeks ago? We absolutely love these sturdy board books that are full of clever surprises and made for small hands. With Christmas just 7 weeks away Pan Macmillan has just released this special edition, introducing young readers to the Christmas story the ‘busy book’ way:

Busy Nativity (RRP $6.99) is a chunky, colourful interactive board book that tells the story of Mary, Joseph and of course the most important of all, precious baby Jesus. Children can follow the couple on their way to Bethlehem where they finally end up in a stable to welcome the blessed child who would save the world. By pushing, pulling and sliding they will send the donkey on his path, meet friendly animals, rock baby Jesus in his bed of straw and discover the gifts of the three wise men. What a wonderful way to explain the true meaning of Christmas to the youngest in the family!

Whether you pop this gorgeous budget-friendly read in a Christmas stocking, place it under the tree or make it part of your ’25 books until Christmas’ Advent stash, it is bound to be a big hit with your little reader(s).

With only a few weeks left until baby no.6 joins the family I feel like I am constantly in and out of hospital for check-ups, going for ultrasounds and last minute shopping. It’s rather exhausting for me but quite tiring too for miss Hattie who has to tag along everywhere I go. I am trying to make the trips as easy as possible with yummy lunnchboxes full of tasty snacks and some gorgeous books to read while waiting (there is a lot of waiting!). These lovely board books by the talented Louise Forshaw are absolutely perfect for your baby bag or your toddler’s backpack and I can’t wait to add a few more to our collection:

In Busy Vet (RRP $6.99) we take a look around the veterinary clinic, where we meet all kinds of animals. From cats to dogs and from turtles to lizards, there are so many different patients. Little readers will love exploring Busy Vet by pushing, pulling and sliding the tabs while listening to simple rhyming sentences. Made from sturdy cardboard these books are totally toddler-proof and very durable.

I wonder what treats they are serving up in the Busy Café (RRP $6.99) today? On display are scrumptious muffins, cakes, rolls, fruit and much more. Using the tabs kids can pay at the counter and ‘print’ a receipt, whip up a smoothie and a coffee for mum, this book is so much fun to look at. Priced at just $6.99 each, Busy Books are amazing value for money, now that’s a great gift idea that won’t break the bank!

Last month I introduced you to The World of Dinosaur Roar!, a collection of sturdy board books that welcomes young readers to the big and boisterous world of dinosaurs. We’ve already met the noisy Tyrannosaurus Rex and the sneaky Deinonychus and today we’re in for another awesome dino meet-up:

From early morning to late at night, with his enormous appetite the Diplodocus spends his day eating everything in sight. No matter how much he bites and crunches, nibbles and munches, he is always looking for the next snack. Until his never-ending hunger sees him take a bite of something a bit too close to home in Dinosaur Munch! The Diplodocus (RRP $14.99).

Did you know all The World of Dinosaur Roar books are approved by the Department of Earth Sciences at the Natural History Museum in London? This mean they are not only fun to read but educational too, treating your little bookworm to a host of interesting facts about each of these amazing dinosaurs. You’ll even learn how to pronounce their scientific names properly, so you’ll be an expert in no time!

While I always love having the kids home on school holidays I do admit it can make things a little tricky. A simple visit to the doctor or a stint in a hospital waiting room can be pretty challenging when you have five cheeky monkeys to entertain! Thankfully I always come prepared with a nappy bag full of tricks, this time I packed some sturdy new board books that kept the little ones happy for ages:

A perfect size for small hands and mummy’s handbag this Dinosaur Roar! The Tyrannosaurus Rex (RRP $14.99) board book is the perfect read for young dino fans. Once you’ve got the tricky dinosaur names right (don’t worry, the book will help you!) you can embark on a roaring and rhyming prehistoric adventure. The dinosaurs are colourful and friendly and you’ll even learn some interesting dino facts along the way.

From the day he hatched out of his egg there is nothing Dinosaur Boo loves more than scaring his dino-buddies with an unexpected ‘Boo!’. It’s all fun and games for Dinosaur Boo! The Deinonychus (RRP $14.99), until one day he gets a taste of medicine when he bumps into the green giant from the previous story… The deafening roar from a real Tyrannosaurus is a lesson Boo will never forget!

With Easter rapidly coming closer I find we’re surrounded by chocolate eggs, bunnies and chickens wherever we go. Thankfully these days parents are more and more moving away from sugar-loaded chocolate gifts and hunting for healthier (and more durable) presents instead. Here’s an egg-celent Easter gift idea featuring the adorable Charlie Chick:

Made from strong, sturdy cardboard and featuring bright, happy colours Charlie Chick Wants to Play is a perfect picture book for little hands. Charlie Chick wants to play, but first he needs to find his ball… The yellow chick searches the farm to find his ball and on his search he comes across a range of lovely farm friends. Young readers will love learning about different animals, finding out where they live and of course lifting the flap to look for the ball. Once he’s found his ball the whole menagerie joins in for a fun game of football.

One of the (many) things I really love about having a big family is seeing the kids grow and watching their personalities develop. Even though our five kids are very different there are some things they all have in common like their love for reading (they have that from me!). As little as Hattie is, she is already showing great interest in reading (and chewing on) books so that’s a great sign!

Dinoshapes

Don’t worry, Hattie is not to blame for the cheeky nibble on the corner of Dinoshapes. It’s all part of the playful design of this gorgeous new children’s book.

Dinoshapes is the latest addition to the Alphaprints collection, a colourful series of sturdy board books designed for the youngest readers of the family. Dinoshapes introduces little book lovers to seven friendly dinosaurs using bright colours, interesting textures and different shapes and patterns.

Dinoshapes Alphaprint

Children can look at the fun illustrations, turn the strong pages, explore the textures and listen to the rhyming text, they even learn how to pronounce those tricky dinosaur names properly! It’s a fantastic sensory book that kids will love.
