Without the usual time pressure I am quite happy to take on a fun kitchen challenge and all our children love helping out with mixing, rolling, icing and of course eating. Are you looking for a super cool school holiday baking project to do with the kids? Let expert cake sculptor Sweet Art show you how to take your The Emoji Movie favourites from screen to scrumptious:

While waiting for an overdue baby was not exactly what I had expected there is an upside to everything, in this case the delayed paternity leave allows Hip Daddy to spend some of the school holidays with us at home! We all love having daddy around and it will make holiday outings a lot more fun (and of course easy). The kids are also hanging out to watch the newly released Despicable Me 3, which I will keep tucked away for a rainy afternoon:

Seeing the original Despicable Me at the cinema is still one of my kids’ favourite movie moments, the whole family loved it and we still watch it regularly. Its sequel was another big hit so I have no doubt Despicable Me 3 will live up to our expectations and deliver plenty of laughs.

If you fell in love with hilarious villain Gru you are in for a treat, as Despicable Me 3 doubles the giggles (and adventure) with the surprise arrival of Gru’s twin brother Dru. Gru’s lovely wife Lucy and his three adopted daughters Agnes, Margo and Edith generally keep Gru on the right track, but with brother Dru on the scene Gru is rediscovering just how much fun it is to be bad again.

Add to the mix a bunch of cheeky minions, sneaky disguises, clever thefts, last-minute rescues, friends, enemies and the beginning of a family bond, Despicable Me 3 promises to be full of action and adventure.

‘Despicable Me 3’ is now available on Blu-ray (RRP $44.95) and DVD (RRP $39.95) at all good retail stores across Australia.

Christmas Countdown – Day 8

During our wonderful European holiday in September my parents took the big four to see The Secret Life of Pets in 3D at the movies, a great treat for them and kid-free time for us! Afterwards they were all full of praise and kept telling us how hilarious the movie was, so I was a little sad to have missed their little giggles and big belly laughs. I promised the kids we’d revisit the fun once the movie was released on DVD and this week it finally hit the shelves:

Created by the makers of Despicable Me the entertaining block-buster The Secret Life of Pets is bound to be the hit of the holiday season. This family-friendly animation movie researches the thought that has crossed every pet-owner’s mind: ‘I wonder what my pets get up to when I am not home… the answer is bound to get everyone smiling.

the-secret-life-of-pets-blu-rayLoyal terrier Max is living the life every dog dreams of: Being spoilt, pampered and waited upon by his wonderful, big-hearted owner Katie. But life as he knows it is about to change when Katie brings home a rather large surprise in the shape of a big and boisterous shelter dog named Duke. Getting used to their new shared life is turning out be quite the challenge for these two ‘brothers’.

When Max and his unruly new ‘roommate’ slip away from their dog-walker, they find themselves lost in the urban jungle of New York City. In an attempt to stay ahead of animal control and a rebel band of abandoned pets led by an unhinged bunny named Snowball, they put aside their differences to survive the epic journey back home, just in time for dinner.

‘The Secret Life of Pets’ is now ready for digital download and available on Blu-ray (RRP $45) and DVD (RRP $39.95) at major retailers across Australia.

With the school holidays in mind we’ve got two lovely free The Secret Life of Pets activity sheets for you, they’re a perfect boredom buster for little artists and they may just give mum a few moments of peace and quiet too. Roadshow Entertainment

With the silly (or should I say stressful) season upon us many mums are starting to feel the pressure: The fanciest Christmas meal, the prettiest tree and neatest home, the most gorgeous outfits and perfectly behaved children, we are trying so hard to get it all right! Before the busyness of Christmas kicks off make sure to catch up with your favourite mama-friends and let your hair down with one of the funniest comedies of the year:

If you have ever wondered what happens when a group of ‘perfect’ mums get together, ditch the rules and run wild here’s your chance, meet Bad Moms.

bad-moms-dvdBalancing a good career, dealing with a failing marriage, maintaining a beautiful home, being the devoted school-mum and raising perfect children, it’s hard work and good mother Amy (Mila Kunis) is tired. About to lose her marbles Amy does what many of us (secretly) dream of every now and then: accompanied by two like-minded mothers (Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell) she puts aside the endless lists of responsibilities, turns her back on proper mum-behaviour and enjoys a well-deserved time-out.

Amy rather enjoys her newly found laid-back attitude and freedom but not everyone agrees… At first Amy’s actions and opinions cause tension between all the ‘picture-perfect’ mothers in the school community, but in the end she makes people see that many mothers are indeed stressed, overworked and need time off from time to time. Maybe something good comes from being a ‘bad mom’ after all.

Mum-to-mum warning: Having been created by the makers of The Hangover viewers of Bad Moms (M-rated) are in for a real good laugh, you may want to cross your legs extra tight or bring a spare pair of pants!

‘Bad Moms’ is now ready for digital download and available on Blu-ray (RRP $44.95) and DVD (RRP $39.95) at major retailers across Australia.

Inside Out

Seeing we’re a family of big Disney fans I am a bit ashamed to say that we are yet to see much talked-about family movie Inside Out. We’ve had such a busy few months preparing for the new baby to arrive that we completely missed it at the cinema, to great disappointment of our oldest three Disney lovers. Luckily our chance to catch up is just around the corner with Disney Pixar ‘Inside Out hitting Australian shelves in just six short days:

Inside Out Blu-ray

I don’t know about you but I regularly say to my little ones: ‘I wonder what is going on inside that little head of yours?’ Well, Disney’s Inside Out is giving viewers the unique opportunity to take a peek inside the head of a little girl called Riley. Inside Riley’s mind, also known as the Headquarters, you’ll meet the emotions Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness who guide Riley on this tricky journey called life.

Normally it’s happy and optimistic Joy who is in charge, but when Riley’s family moves to a new city her emotions are struggling to keep up the good spirits. After a tumble with the core memories Joy and Sadness get lost in the maze of Riley’s head, leaving Riley with nothing but Fear, Anger and Disgust… To bring back the much needed balance in Riley’s life and put a smile back on her face, emotions Joy and Sadness have to find their way back to Headquarters travelling through mysterious areas like Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions.

If you are looking for a way to explain to your children the importance of emotions and help them identify their feelings you will absolutely love Inside Out.

Inside Out will be available on DVD (RRP $39.95), Blu-ray (RRP $39.95) and 3D Blu-ray (RRP $59.95) at major retailers across Australia from November 11.

Into The Woods

With four children under seven we generally limit our cinema visits to real children’s movies. Movie tickets don’t come cheap so when we do go we want to make sure it is appropriate and fun for the whole family (I think hubby and I only went to the movies together twice in almost 10 years!). While we liked the sound of Disney‘s Into The Woods ourselves we decided our kids were a bit too young to watch it, so we’ve been hanging out for the DVD release instead and now it’s finally here. Time for a date night in I’d say!

Into The Woods is not just another recount of a famous favourite tale, it’s a magical and musical mix of several classic fairytales skilfully woven together by acclaimed filmmaker Rob Marshall (the mastermind behind the Academy Award®-winning musical “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”). Featuring a range of big movie stars like Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp and more Into The Woods is sure to impress. Get ready to be surprised by all the unexpected twists and turns!

Into The Woods Blu-rayFollow the story of the childless baker and his wife who are desperate to lift the curse placed on them by a mean witch. Her demands include a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn and a slipper as pure as gold, not exactly things you find on every street corner. During their search they meet Jack, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel and learn some valuable life lessons. Will their dream finally come true?

Into the Woods is available on DVD ($39.95) and Blu-ray ($49.95) at major retailers across Australia.
