Happy Valentine’s Day! I’ll admit that I am not really into the commercial side of Valentine’s Day, surely I don’t need an excuse to shower my special people with a bit of extra love? Even the littlest treasures can celebrate love all year around with this gorgeous find from Honeybee Toys, isn’t it delightful?

Grimm's Heart Blocks

Grimm’s Wooden Heart Blocks ($74, ages 12 months+) are made from smooth non-lacquered wood in bright rainbow colours. These beautiful heart-shaped blocks are an ideal size for little hands and designed for creative building fun.

Grimm's Heart SetStack them, sort them, line them up… it’s all about using your imagination and even the wooden storage ‘box’ can be taken apart to become part of your unique sculpture. This lovely Grimm’s building set is a wonderful fine motor skills exercise and would make a great timeless gift for young builders. I think it would look fabulous on display in a baby’s nursery, kids playroom or classroom too.

Big Baby Shower – Day 15

Last week I showed you those stylish Jack & Evelyn wooden toy boxes for your baby’s nursery, today the spotlight is on a classic keepsake gift that would make the perfect first addition to that toy box.

Uncle Goose Lower Case

Check out these fabulous block sets sourced with love by Where Did You Get That?, aren’t they gorgeous?

Uncle Goose BoxThe sturdy Uncle Goose Wooden Blocks (RRP $69.95-$79.95) are made from sustainable Michigan basswood and decorated in vibrant bright colours that appeal to little eyes. They are easy to hold for small hands and can withstand the test of time. The sides of each block feature letters, numbers or pictures, so aside from the obvious building fun you can explore a whole new world of learning as you play.

UG DutchIf anyone is keen to treat our new bundle to some of these stunning wooden blocks I’d love to cast my vote for the Dutch ABC Blocks (no surprise there I am sure). Obviously in this case the letters of the alphabet are the same but the pictures are linked to Dutch words, just beautiful. The block sets are available in other languages too, how about Greek, Italian or Chinese? What a special way to celebrate a new baby’s heritage and a wonderful gift idea for grandparents and godparents.

I can’t believe it is already a year ago that I first introduced you to the awesome Plus-Plus range from the Coccinella store. I was so excited to tell you about these quirky shaped building bricks from Denmark and one year on we still love them, I purchased our kids the big 400 pc box and they regularly tip all the Plus-Plus pieces over on the rug to build, create and play for ages, individually or together.

Plus-Plus 3-in-1 Pastel 220

Shaped like two plus symbols (hence the name) this funky building toy adds a whole new dimension to building fun. You can build upwards, sideways and even completely flat, Plus-Plus will really get those little minds working. Designed with a soft, smooth yet strong and durable material Plus-Plus is a fantastic tactile activity for children that really encourages them to get creative and think about the bigger picture (it does require a bit of patience!).

Plus-Plus 3-in-1 Neon

The new Plus-Plus 3-in-1 Mini building sets are available in two different sizes: 220 pieces ($19.95) and 480 pieces ($29.95). Move over Lego, Duplo and MegaBloks, it is time for a refreshing take on the classic building block. All the way from trendy Denmark Plus-Plus has just arrived on Australian stores and you can find it fresh on the shelves at gorgeous online store Coccinella.

Plus-Plus Midi Box

Plus-Plus, the latest building craze from Denmark

Designed and made in Denmark PlusPlus is quickly becoming one of the hippest building toys around. Plus-Plus blocks have the shape of, you guessed it, two plus symbols, sort of like a traditional puzzle piece but with square corners. Made from strong, solid, durable material that is free from Phtalates and PVC the Plus-Plus blocks are perfect for children, they can’t break them or squash them and they are made to last.

Plus-Plus Midi 100The smooth rubbery texture gives them a very pleasant feel which is very important for young children and it makes it easy to slide the pieces into eachother. At the same time the blocks ‘grip together’ well so your child’s artwork doesn’t just fall apart. Whether kids want to recreate or invent a specific shape or image or prefer to just connect the blocks, it is great fun either way.

Plus-Plus House

My 4-year old twins (and of course miss 2) have not yet worked out how to build something that resembles anything but that doesn’t seem to bother them in the slightest. They experiment with balance, colours and patterns and absolutely love it! Plus-Plus is a great tool to help kids to use their imagination and get creative. At night time I found myself playing with Plus-Plus and time just flew by as I tried to build things, an awesome boredom buster (or excuse not to do laundry).

Plus-Plus PastelPlus-Plus is available in two sizes (Midi and Mini) and comes in multiple colours (Pastel, Basic and Neon), so it’s a perfect toy for both boys and girls and it suits different ages too. Prices start at just $9.95 and pack sizes range from 100 pcs all the way up to a huge 3600 pcs. This biggest Plus-Plus kit contains all three colour combinations, it would be an ideal size for eg. schools and kindergartens and is still very well priced.

Tegu, think outside the blocks

Eco, Toys, Books & Movies  Comments Off on Tegu, think outside the blocks
Sep 042012

When I just started Hip little one I stumbled upon the very exciting Tegu range, at the time it was not available in Australia so I decided not to write about it (no point leaving you all disappointed is there?). Three years on Tegu is still one of the most fabulous toys I have come across and I am glad to say that it is now within our reach too, you can find this hip range at Australian online store Whimsy Child.

So what exactly is Tegu? Tegu is the name of a unique, creative, fun, educational and eco-friendly collection of magnetic wooden building blocks. The blocks come in a range of different sizes, shapes and colours, perfect for teaching children that there is no limit to their imagination. The Tegu concept was born during a visit to Tegucigalpa, Honduras (hence the name) and the blocks are made of sustainable Honduras hardwood.

The wooden blocks are timeless and durable and sure to provide hours of entertainment. You’ll be surprised at all the things you can create with just a few blocks! Keep one of these Tegu Pocket Pouches in your bag and your little one will never be bored again while waiting for doctor or dentist. In saying that, you’ll be hooked on Tegu in no time so you can always grow your Tegu collection with a bigger set like the colourful Endeavour Set (pictured above).
