I know it is hard to believe but in the almost fourteen years I have lived in South Australia, Australia’s Festival State, I have not once made it to the Adelaide Fringe. Things are about to change as we’re planning to celebrate Sybil’s birthday in style this weekend with a visit to a Fringe performance full of giggles, gasps and good old-fashioned family fun:

This year Lost in Translation, one of the UK’s leading contemporary circuses, is making its Adelaide Fringe debut combining theatre, comedy and music in one amazing show that is guaranteed to please the crowds. Hotel Paradiso is a winning mix of thrillingly spectacular and daring circus skills including incredible acrobatics, clowning and juggling, theatrical storytelling, slapstick and physical comedy, it certainly ticks all our boxes! They even use a person as a skipping rope, this has to be seen to be believed…

Come along to meet Madame and the charming staff of the quirkily ineffective Hotel Paradiso. Gathered from countries around the globe the Lost in Translation cast of six highly skilled acrobats, clowns and jugglers will tell the story of how the tenants battle to save their home and livelihood from ‘the Banker’. With thrills, gasps, laughs and drama there’s plenty for both adults and children to enjoy and the glowing reviews are coming in thick and fast: “Easily the best family show at the Fringe!”

Hotel Paradiso at Gluttony is suitable for ages 5 and up and it’s on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so check your calendar and lock in those seats.

To find out more about the Adelaide Fringe, to take a closer look at Hotel Paradiso and to order your tickets online visit www.adelaidefringe.com.au.

For your chance to win 1 of 2 Hotel Paradiso family passes (RRP $85, each pass admits 2 adults and 2 children OR 1 adult and 3 children) for the Sunday February 16 (2.50pm) performance hop on over to the Hip Little One Facebook page. Good luck!

Cirque du Soleil ‘Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities’

A few years ago I was offered the incredible opportunity to see Cirque du Soleil perform in Antwerp, Belgium, however with no babysitter available I sadly had to pass last minute and it still makes me sad thinking about it. I have always wanted to experience Cirque du Soleil and I have been patiently waiting for another chance… with Adelaide on the tour list for 2020 I am secretly hoping it will be my year!

Written and directed by Michel Laprise, Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities is a tale in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible. In this realm set in the latter half of the nineteenth century, reality is quite relative indeed as our perception of it is utterly transformed.

In an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a scientist (the Seeker) is convinced that there exists a hidden world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await. Out of his curio cabinet steps an international cast of 47 artists from 17 countries, a collection of otherworldly characters made up of world-class gymnasts, acrobats, contortionists, hand-puppeteers, yo-yo wizards, clowns, actors and musicians. Together they turn the Seeker’s steampunk world upside-down as they are guided by an energetic gypsy jazz, electro swing soundtrack.

Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities’ will be opening its doors to the public in the following locations across Australia (with Melbourne now being treated to additional performances, how lucky!):

Sydney – October 2 to November 24, 2019
Brisbane – January 10 to February 23, 2020
Melbourne – March 12 to April 26, 2020
Adelaide – May 29 to June 7, 2020
Perth – July 15 to August 2

This year guests are in for an extra special treat as on top of the 90-minute long show a special surprise of epic proportions awaits…

As you enter the big top you’ll be transported back in time and find yourself surrounded by giant, life-like dinosaurs, don’t worry, they don’t bite! The ‘Jurassic Unearthed’ dinosaur exhibition is completely free with your Silvers Circus admission ticket and is full of cool creatures, fun facts and photo moments, which dinosaur is your favourite? The exhibition opens 1 hour prior to every show and you can stay as long as you like after the show too, now that’s a dinosaur-sized opportunity not to miss.

The most amazing artists from around the globe have been enrolled to make this year’s Silvers Circus tour a huge success. Little boys will be sitting on the edge of their seat watching 4 dare-devil riders conquer ‘The Globe of Death’ on their impressive motorbikes while little girls hold their breath as the beautiful Madeline shows off her skills on the Cloudswing high up under the big top.

Argentian artist Gypsy will have you scratching your head as she keeps a huge 80 hoops in the air, there is juggling, magic, unicycling and don’t forget the Wheel of Steel. Of course a circus wouldn’t be a circus without a hilarious clown performance so you can count on Dominik Gasser and his comedic friends to get visitors young and old roaring with laughter.

All these and many more fantastic acts will be expertly talked together by internationally renowned ringmaster Simon Tait. With more than 25 years of entertainment experience under his belt he will take the whole circus public on an unforgettable journey so that every single visitor will walk out with a precious memory to last a lifetime.

Penguin

As a child I absolutely loved reading Enid Blyton’s stories about a set of twins at boarding school, it sounded like so much fun and there was always a new adventure waiting around the corner. Now it’s time for the next generation to explore the highs and lows of boarding school with the fabulous Alice-Miranda series by real-life boarding school teacher Jacqueline Harvey. This time Alice-Miranda packs her bags and heads overseas for a cultural school exchange all the way in China:

Whether Alice-Miranda follows adventure or whether adventure follows her, one thing is sure: There is never a boring day when Alice-Miranda is around. From visiting some of China’s popular tourist hotspots to sampling the local cuisines and staying with a real Chinese family, Alice-Miranda and her friends from the boarding school are having the time of their life in Alice-Miranda in China (RRP $16.99).

The girls are particularly impressed with famous Chinese acrobat group Circus of Golden Destiny and its leading star, a flexible girl called Summer. When they meet the talented acrobat Alice-Miranda and her friend Jacinta instantly feel that something is amiss, and over the next few days the mystery only deepens. When their host family turns out to be an acrobat group too they’re catapulted right into the centre of it all. In between the trapezes, backflips, tumbles and spinning plates Alice-Miranda and her new Chinese friends bundle their powers to solve the puzzle and put the smile back on the face of little Summer.
