Learning to read is a huge achievement, some of my children instantly ‘got it’ and others took their time to work it out and that is totally OK. I have definitely learnt that keeping it fun, exciting and entertaining helps take away some of the pressure and allows young readers to playfully make the jump from looking at pictures to proper reading. Proving you’re never too young to become a bookworm, LeapFrog has released this amazing new invention called LeapStart:

The LeapStart 3D Learning System (RRP $89.95, ages 2-7) brings books to life while cleverly combining a whole range of important learning areas like reading, spelling, puzzling, languages, tracing, maths, comprehension and much more. This makes it exciting for curious kids with different interests and levels of development and perfect for our two youngest learners.

It all starts with the LeapStart 3D base station that flips open to hold any LeapStart book of your choosing. Once you click your book into the base and switch the device on you can begin your discovery journey with the chunky toddler-friendly stylus. Each page is filled with interactive fun: Pictures, words, sounds, games, tunes, letters, numbers… just touch anything you see with the Touch & Talk stylus and watch the magic happen!

The education experts at LeapFrog understand exactly how little minds work and have designed the LeapStart technology to help develop a love for reading through play. Letters, letter sounds, words and sentences become a lot more interesting when you can touch them to hear them being read out loud, and you’re in charge. LeapStart allows young readers to feel independent and once they start ‘getting it right’ it offers a wonderful sense of pride and achievement.

The futuristic pop-up holographic screen that is built into the LeapStart 3D base station makes LeapStart 3D an experience like no other. As children explore each page by touching images, playing games or answering questions they will be treated to special holographic animations on the full colour screen, it’s like your favourite characters have jumped from the page to take you on an out-of-this-world adventure!

We have started our collection with the two included Level 1 titles (Shapes & Colours and 22 Words in English & French) as well as the LeapStart 3D Sampler Book but there are plenty of other LeapStart 3D books across three different levels to collect. Featuring popular characters like PAW Patrol, Mickey Mouse and Peppa Pig and covering topics from maths to writing, reading to science and everything in between there really is a LeapStart adventure waiting for every child.

With several birthdays coming up in a September we have already added Pre-School STEM, Disney Princess Shine and of course First Day of School to our wish list. Our four-year old Hattie is gearing up for the start of school so this will be a wonderful help as we prepare for the big day. Bonus: If you already own one or more books from the earlier LeapStart version, you’ll be pleased to know those titles are compatible with LeapStart 3D too (obviously without the 3D effect).

A little heads up for parents: LeapStart 3D takes a bit of preparation to get started, you will need to insert 3 AA batteries and connect the device to your computer to set it up and download the audio content for your books. Once that’s done LeapStart 3D is good to go! A built-in carry handle makes LeapStart easy to transport for small hands.

You can find the LeapFrog LeapStart 3D range at your local Big W or Target store and other good toy stores or online at selected retailers.

Khumba logo2

Get ready for a wild African adventure with an adorable, and rather unique, young zebra called Khumba and join him on his journey across the Great Karoo desert:

Khumba, released by Transmission Films, tells the story of little Khumba, known within his herd as the half-zebra because he is only half striped. Some members of the herd even believe he brings bad luck, life is not easy for Khumba who is confronted with his different looks day in day out. When rain fails to fall and the water hole runs dry the blame falls on Khumba, it’s a heavy burden to bear and when he hears of a mysterious water hole that may help him get those missing stripes he leaves the herd.

On his hunt for the water hole Khumba meets a range of interesting animals, some friendly and some not so much. He travels the highs and the lows, the mountains and the valleys and the hot and dry desert, dreaming of finding his missing stripes. All he wants is to be the same as other zebras, believing that this will break the curse and solve the important drought issues.

Khumba DVDKhumba is a lovely story about friendship, self acceptance and believing in yourself, it teaches children a very valuable lesson: don’t try to change who you are, real beauty can be found in being yourself and accepting your differences. At 82 minutes it is quite a long movie for young children so our 3-year old didn’t watch it completely but master 5 did and loved the story, he really got the message which was lovely to see.

Khumba is available on 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray Combo (RRP $34.99) and DVD (RRP $29.99) from leading retailers across Australia.

Ground Floor Fun with IVI Rugs

Feb 182014

For months I have been admiring the stunning IVI Interactive Play Rugs and with our girls moving into the same room recently I finally had a good excuse to get one. I took me a little while to decide on the design as they are all divine but eventually I made up my mind and ordered this one from The Little Haven:

IVI Family Play Rug

IVI Family Play Rug

The IVI Family Play Rug features a stylish house with lots of separate bedrooms, kitchen, living rooms and bathroom, a lovely green garden and even a pool with sunbeds. It’s hard to show in a picture but it’s the unique 3D design that makes IVI Play Rugs so special. The rug pile is raised to form the walls, furniture and objects in the house, all you need are your favourite dolls and your own imagination (something my girls have plenty of) and you’re in for hour after hour of pretend play fun.

My girls' room

Beds and bedside tables, a shower, basin and a bath mat, a plush rug and coffee table, side tables and tv cabinet, it’s all there. Our children don’t have many little dolls but that didn’t spoil the fun, some Duplo people, their Sonny Angel dolls and even a few Barbies live peacefully alongside eachother in the IVI house. Outside an exotic garden full of jungle animals offers entertainment for sun bathing guests, oh to be three and five years old again.

Hours of fun

All IVI rugs feature lots of different colours so they will blend in well with any decor but eventually the leading colours pink and green of the Family Play Rug won me over as they tie in beautifully with the rest of our girls’ bedroom. We already had the Mocka Six Cube Storage Unit with pink fabric boxes and the very pretty Habitat Baby Garden Party bed linen and the end result is such a bright, fresh and happy room, the girls love playing in it.

Depending on the size of your room and the number of children who will be playing on it you can choose between a small (100 x 150 cm) or large (134 x 180 cm) rug, please note that designs differ slighly between small and large rugs. Because our new rug was going in a shared bedroom I decided on the larger rug and as you can see it is a great size with plenty of room for a few little people to play together. But no matter how big the rug, your cheeky baby sister will still know where to find you and you need to guard your favourite dolls with care!

There are currently 11 different IVI Activity Rugs to choose from to suit boys, girls and gender neutral bedrooms, prices start at $159.95 and delivery is FREE Australia wide.

LeapFrog takes on Monsters University

Toys, Books & Movies  Comments Off on LeapFrog takes on Monsters University
Jul 142013

Ever since the kids discovered that their heroes from Monsters Inc. were back for a sequel they have been begging us to go see the movie on the big screen. We promised we would take them but sickness has been keeping us indoors for weeks now, such a disappointment for my little Monsters fans. Luckily I knew exactly how to turn those frowns upside down and introduced them to these two great Monsters University releases from LeapFrog:

LeapReader Monsters UniversityLast week I told you all about the exciting new LeapReader Reading and Writing System (if you missed it you can read it here) and Monsters University ($24.99, ages 5-8) is one of the first titles in the LeapReader library. We all know kids learn better when they like the subject they’re reading about so this was the perfect book for our kids to start with. As if Mike and Sully weren’t interesting enough already the book comes with a pair of 3D glasses, smiling faces all around.

Reading is fun with the LeapReader

Reading is fun with the LeapReader

The hardcover book tells the story of Disney’s Monsters University which is currently showing in cinemas around the country. Kids can hear the story read out loud or read letters, words and sentences by themselves using the innovative LeapReader stylus. What I think is a real bonus is that the stylus teaches children to pay attention, listen carefully and follow instructions, those are very useful skills at school and at home.

Learning about Nouns and Verbs with Mike

Learning about Nouns and Verbs with Mike

But there is more than just reading, by touching the symbols on each page corner kids can play fun (and educational!) games too and even the illustrations come to life when you touch them with the stylus. We’ve read Monsters University so many times now but we keep hearing new things which is what makes these books such a success. My kids love playing the games and without realising it they are learning about position words, nouns and verbs and adding tricky words to their vocabulary too.

LeapFrog Explorer Monsters UniversityTo avoid arguments between the big two I made sure there was some more ‘scary’ entertainment available in the shape of the LeapFrog Explorer Monsters University Learning Game ($44.99, ages 4-7). We have both the LeapFrog GS and the LeapPad 1 and it is compatible with both so that’s very convenient. This game has so many cool functions, I think we’ve only discovered the tip of the iceberg but I can already tell you it is a huge hit.

The game uses a range of different exercises that build creativity (create your own monster picture and practise your scariest monster sounds), logic skills (walk your way through the university, avoid obstacles and enemies and learn about cause and effect) and memory skills (play the monster memory game and solve puzzles). Get working on those scare skills! Last but not least: Monsters University is a great tool to show your kids that there is nothing scary about monsters, they’re just funny!

If you want to stay up-to-date with all the latest LeapFrog news and specials make sure you keep an eye on the LeapFrog Australia Facebook page, that way you’re always the first to know.

Nov 102012

In the past year I have written about quite a few Disney movies and it amazes me how every single one of my readers seems to have a different Disney favourite, it just shows that Disney really speaks to everyone. However there is one Disney movie that stands out from the crowd, I have not come across a single person who doesn’t love it! Here’s a little hint:

And just in case that doesn’t ring a bell (you must have been living under a rock!):

I think we all know Finding Nemo and any child recognises a clownfish from a distance, aren’t they all called Nemo anyway? Finding Nemo was first released 9 years ago and it was a huge hit all over the world. Young and old fell head over heels in love with curious little Nemo, forgetful Dory and loving dad Marlin. For an even more impressive ocean experience you can now watch Finding Nemo on Blu-ray and even Blu-ray 3D, you’ll feel like you are swimming under water and you don’t even need snorkles.

Finding Nemo is available on Blu-ray Triple Play ($49.95) and Blu-ray Double Play ($39.95) at major retailers across Australia.

Also released this month is Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings, a brand new movie featuring fairy favourite Tinker Bell who you might remember from Peter Pan. In this magical adventure the curious (and a little naughty) Tinker Bell ventures over the border to the Winter Woods to find out more about the meaning of her sparkling wings. She soon discovers she is not the only one with sparkling wings and together with her new found friend, the winter fairy Periwinkle, she is determined to find answers.

Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings is available on Blu-ray ($49.95) and DVD ($39.95) at major retailers across Australia.
