We all know the saying ‘three is a crowd’ and when it comes to kids play it’s often very true: three can be a tricky number. I try to teach our children that it is important to be inclusive and always invite others to join in their play, thankfully they do try most of the time! Sometimes inclusion takes a bit of creative thinking, like in this gorgeous new EK Books picture book:
The Box Cars (RRP $24.99) tells the story of best friends Liam and Kai. The two boys are inseparable and their handmade box cars take them on the most exciting adventures. Then one day a little girl wants to join in their play… three kids, two box cars… how will this work out?
First Liam and Kai try sharing the two cars with their new friend (but someone always has to sit out, which is not much fun). Then they try two passengers in one car, but the load’s too heavy for one little box car and they end up with just a pile of cardboard! A few old boxes and some creative thinking later prove that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Together they build a brand new box train with multiple carriages, ready to take the adventurous trio on a new adventure.
The Box Cars features short, simple sentences that are easy to read and sweet, colourful illustrations that really bring the story to life. It is a great book to teach young children about making friends, sharing, being welcoming to others and how to use creative thinking to come up with solutions.
