Death and grief is hard enough for adults to accept and understand, let alone for young children. Saying goodbye is really difficult and often the first heartbreak a child will endure is the death of a much loved family pet. If you’re looking for a helpful tool that will start this conversation look no further, EK Books is here to help with this lovely new book:

Barkley is soft, small and very smart. He is furry, friendly and fabulous. Barkley is Olivia’s best friend and together they make the most amazing team, until the time comes for Barkley to hang up his superhero cape and retire… Saying Goodbye to Barkley (RRP $24.99) has put an end to exciting adventures and Olivia is feeling lost, her heart is heavy and she misses Barkley terribly…

After a while Olivia’s feelings slowly start to change, and she realises that Barkley would never want her to stop having fun or miss out on secret missions. Inspired by her buddy Barkley Olivia visits the local animal shelter and falls in love with a big white fluffy dog called Spud.

It turns out that Spud doesn’t actually like fighting crime or catching bad guys like dear old Barkley did. Olivia comes to accept that Spud is not Barkley, but that doesn’t make her any less loveable… just different and that’s perfectly OK too.

Many years ago someone told me (with nothing but love!) that I tend to ‘wear a black hat’ and see problems and worry wherever I go, something that has always stayed with me. Since then I try my best to leave off my black hat and not waste my time and energy on negative things. It’s a lesson that is valuable to people of all ages and this gorgeous EK Books read has been a wonderful way to teach my kids the importance of positivity, how we can influence our emotions and look at things differently:

Let’s start by saying that hats are out and glasses are in. In Grey-glasses-itis (RRP $19.99) we meet a Little Anxious Creature (LAC) called Loppy. As Loppy is using a rainbow of colours to make a beautiful painting he realises that different colours evoke different feelings: Blues are peaceful, yellows are cheerful and reds make him excited.

Then Curly comes along and invites Loppy to try on glasses with coloured lenses: Green lenses make Loppy feel relaxed and purple sparks creativity. But what happens when Loppy puts on the grey glasses? The grey glasses turn everything grey, the happy colours disappear and Loppy gets sadder and sadder… He no longer wants to paint.

Find out how Loppy overcomes this severe case of grey-glasses-itis and brings the colour back into his life and his mind. Grey-glasses-itis is a lovely conversation starter for families with young children, encouraging Little Anxious Creatures to take off their grey glasses and choose colour!

You can find Grey-glasses-itis in leading book stores across Australia.

At almost 3.5 years old miss Hattie is getting very excited (and also a little nervous) about the prospect of starting kindy. She loves painting, craft and colouring but is not too keen to practicing her letters and numbers, so the trick seems to be to combine them. Over the last few weeks we’ve been working with this cool picture book by Paul Stickland, the hero of all dinosaur books:

Ten Terrible Dinosaurs (RRP $14.99) is a colourful picture book filled with cheeky dinosaurs. Hattie likes the bright colours and the different types of dinosaurs and she is learning to predict the rhyme. The sentences are short enough for her to remember and a few tricky words keep it challenging at the same time. We count down from ten, we describe the dinos and then we try to recreate them with paint or crayons which is good fun!

Did you know that all Dinosaur Roar books are endorsed by the Palaeontology Department of the Natural History Museum in London? This mean they are not only fun to read but educational too, treating your little bookworm to a host of interesting facts about each of these amazing dinosaurs.

We all know the saying ‘three is a crowd’ and when it comes to kids play it’s often very true: three can be a tricky number. I try to teach our children that it is important to be inclusive and always invite others to join in their play, thankfully they do try most of the time! Sometimes inclusion takes a bit of creative thinking, like in this gorgeous new EK Books picture book:

The Box Cars (RRP $24.99) tells the story of best friends Liam and Kai. The two boys are inseparable and their handmade box cars take them on the most exciting adventures. Then one day a little girl wants to join in their play… three kids, two box cars… how will this work out?

First Liam and Kai try sharing the two cars with their new friend (but someone always has to sit out, which is not much fun). Then they try two passengers in one car, but the load’s too heavy for one little box car and they end up with just a pile of cardboard! A few old boxes and some creative thinking later prove that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Together they build a brand new box train with multiple carriages, ready to take the adventurous trio on a new adventure.

The Box Cars features short, simple sentences that are easy to read and sweet, colourful illustrations that really bring the story to life. It is a great book to teach young children about making friends, sharing, being welcoming to others and how to use creative thinking to come up with solutions.

You can find ‘The Box Cars’ in leading book stores across Australia.
