One Sunday

Over the past few weeks the twins have been busy reading books for the Premier’s Reading Challenge and they’re getting very close to the required 12 titles. It is always interesting to see which books they bring home from the school library and I am starting to see a common factor in their choices: 5 out of 12 books are Pamela Allen titles!

One SundayAs someone who is relatively new to Australia (I moved here almost 8 years ago) I didn’t actually grow up with Pamela Allen like many others did but thanks to my children I am rapidly catching up. Can you believe this famous Australian author turned 80 this year and is still writing new books? Her latest work is One Sunday ($24.99), a beautiful big hardcover picture book that is sure to delight readers of all ages.

It’s a cold and windy Sunday evening and a little old man and a little old woman are getting ready for dinner, a yummy Sunday roast is cooking away in the oven. The old man is expecting visitors, like every other Sunday, while the old lady is convinced the horrible weather will keep the visitors away.

The old man peels the potatoes while the old woman stuffs the lamb, the old man puts the roast in the oven while the old lady sets the table for two, after all she is sure that no visitors will come. The wind wails and the old house creaks, surely no one will brave this wet and windy weather? Then ‘Bang, bang, bang!’, someone is knocking on the door… Who will it be?

One Sunday Pamela Allen

Featuring Pamela Allen’s lovely writing style and the most gorgeous illustrations One Sunday is a book that will touch hearts of everyone who knows the warm, fuzzy feeling of preparing and sharing a Sunday roast.
