If you have children in primary school you probably know that Friday was Harmony Day. Yes it was fun to be able to wear orange to school (my children were extra excited because orange is a typical Dutch colour) but of course it is the true message of Harmony Day that is most important. Australia is home to so many wonderful nationalities and cultures and we’re all incredibly lucky to be able to call this beautiful country home.
Gorgeous children’s book Our Island celebrates one of Australia’s many beautiful places, a picture perfect Queensland treasure called Mornington Island. With a population of only 1200 people Mornington Island may not be the largest of islands but it is extremely rich in culture and over time it has produced some world famous artist and dancers. Well known Australian authors Alison Lester and Elizabeth Honey have teamed with the children of Gununa to capture the beauty of Mornington Island in pictures and words.
Turtles and dugongs, sharks and stingrays, wallabies and brolgas, fruit bats and ghost crabs, discover the rich flora and fauna of this little piece of paradise. Every page is an artwork by itself, created with wax crayons and food dye by the children of Mornington Island State School and finished with carefully chosen words to describe the image. The end result is amazing and very inspirational.
When I told our children that the illustration are based on artwork made by Australian children they were very impressed and were keen to try their own hand at drawing their surroundings. We may not have pelicans flapping by or wallabies resting in our backyard but there are plenty of beautiful things worth drawing in our own neighbourhood. I hope one day we’ll be lucky enough to go see the Morning Glory for ourselves.
Nice to know: All royalties from Our Island and one dollar from the sale of each copy will be donated to Mornington Island State School to fund art projects in the community. So when you buy this lovely book for your children you’re giving a gift to other Australian children too, how wonderful!
Our Island will be available in in book stores nationwide and online from April 23, 2014.
