When I heard that Disney’s The Jungle Book would be released on Blu-ray and DVD I immediately thought of a happy memory from my childhood. My primary school class had organised a karaoke party, I was dressed up like a bear and sang Baloo’s ‘Bare Necessities’. To this day I still remember the words, I absolutely loved The Jungle Book back then and I am so excited to be sharing this movie with my own children now:

Disney classic The Jungle Book tells the story of a small baby boy called Mowgli, who finds himself all alone in the middle of the jungle. As you can imagine life in the jungle is full of challenges for a ‘man cub’ like Mowgli but luckily he is discovered by panther Bagheera. Bagheera takes the little boy to a kind wolf mama and Mowgli is being raised like one of the other wolf cubs, all goes well and he feels right at home in the jungle family. Until a scary man-eating tiger makes his way back to the jungle…

The Jungle Book Blu-rayAs much as the jungle animals like Mowgli his safety is most important to them and they decide he has to be sent to a village and live with people of his own kind. Bagheera is appointed as Mowgli’s chaperon and so they start the journey ‘home’. Of course Mowgli is not happy to be leaving, maybe if he joins the elephant tribe of Colonel Hathi he can stay? Bagheera has a hard time convincing Mowgli of what’s best for him and he ends up leaving the stubborn boy by himself.

At that point in time Mowgli meets the friendly, laid-back (but not so smart) bear called Baloo, who is all about having fun and loving life. The two new friends have the best time and Baloo promises Mowgli he’ll look after him and he’ll never have to go the village, a promise that turns out to be hard to keep. Cheeky monkeys, a hungry python and of course Shere Khan the tiger, the jungle is full of dangers for a boy like Mowgli.

Bagheera finally manages to convince Baloo that the best thing for Mowgli is to return to the village of his people. The two guardians bundle their powers and start working together. After a near miss with Shere Khan they reach the outskirts of the village and the moment has come to say goodbye. Poor Mowgli does not want to leave the jungle family he knows and loves and he is scared about that all awaits him in this new world. Will he go?

The Jungle Book is available on DVD ($39.95), Blu-ray ($49.95) and 3D Blu-ray ($54.95) at major retailers across Australia.
