For many years Fisher-Price has been the world’s most loved kids toy brand, I think you’ll have a hard time finding a young family in Australia that doesn’t own any of the big Fisher-Price favourites (who doesn’t have the famous smiling toy phone and stacking rings?). But even the best brands know you shouldn’t get complacent, it is good to shake things up a little every now and then which is why Fisher-Price has come with a refreshing new range of wooden kids toys.
The choice for tradional wooden materials will be welcomed with open arms by many (grand)parents, wooden toys have that classic, timeless charm to it that simply doesn’t exist with plastics. The Fisher-Price ‘My First’ Collection is exclusive to Target Australia and consists of eight great puzzle and building toys specifically designed for little ones from 6 months to 3 years old. Age recommendations vary per product.
From practising colours and shapes to counting, stacking and sorting, each design covers different developmental areas so these toys are not only fun to play with but they are also skill building. The My First Counting Worm Puzzle ($29, 18 months+) is a very sweet way to introduce tiny tots to numbers. When this friendly worm is not being played with it would also look lovely as decoration in the nursery.
The design that first caught my eye was the My First Animal Friends Wooden Puzzle ($49, 18 months+), it almost looks like a mini book shelf but it actually a puzzle. Five cheeky animals need to find their spot on the shelf, a great exercise for little hands and one that’s sure to get little minds working. As they play kids can learn about each animal and try matching them with the right shape.
At first sight the My First Stacking Nest Puzzle ($25, 12 months+) looks quite ‘simple’ but you’ll be surprised by all there is to discover. Colours, sizes, sorting, stacking, animals, numbers, counting, there are so many different play angles with this toy. It would make a perfect 1st birthday gift for a special little someone, one that will be enjoyed for hours and could easily turn into a cute keepsake for later too.
Our daughter Juliet just turned three last month and she absolutely loves the My First Puzzle Block Set ($49, 24 months+), even the twins (5yo) like sitting down with her and they all play the game together. The aim of the game is to match and place the 27 blocks to the pictures on the cards. Some designs are easy but others are quite tricky and with so many blocks it really is a fun and challenging game. The blocks can be neatly kept together in the handy storage bag.
